Disney Planning/Week 1: Help!

Two months and counting until our Disney trip and as I’ve mentioned in previous posts, I’ve done little to prepare. This is about to end. If a Disney trip is in your future (even in the distant future), please join me on the journey. I’m going to get help for all of us!

Allow me to officially introduce Jodi Grundig of Natick. Her credentials? She is one of 16 new parents selected to sit on the interactive online forum at Walt Disney World Moms Panel (thousands applied!) offering free trip planning advice. Every week, Jodi has agreed to respond to my most pressing questions, which I’ll post here. Here we go…

First a little more about Jodi: It wasn’t an easy feat to become a member of this exclusive panel - for two months, Jodi had to write essay upon essay on her own Disney experiences, how she plans for her trips, what were her most memorable moments. There was a phone interview and then she got the great news - she was in!

I spoke with her on the phone last week and there wasn’t any question she couldn’t answer. Hotels, restaurant names, reference book titles and web sites, rolled off her tongue. What I love most about Jodi (and from what I’ve read about the others moms serving on the panel) is that they’re all so upbeat. I mean, it’s Disney after all. There are not like some moms who run in horror when I tell them I’m just starting to plan. Their answers are brief (as to not overwhelm!), and helpful (which is the point). Here’s my first installment of a Q&A with Jodi. Check back next week for more Q&A and a little status update from me!

ME: Why all the craziness? Why are parents looking at me like I have two heads for not planning my trip from start to finish?

Jodi: With four theme parks, two water parks, world-class entertainment, many signature and character dining experiences, and numerous on-site themed resorts, it’s nearly impossible to see everything in one single trip. Many families enjoy planning their trips many months in advance, and the planning becomes part of the experience. From a practical standpoint, it’s useful to do advance planning so that you arrive at Walt Disney World with at least a rough plan of what parks you’ll want to see, which attractions are must-dos, and what restaurants you’ll want to experience. In addition, many of the restaurant venues are extremely popular and making advanced dining reservations helps ensure you’ll be able to eat there. Most of us have limited vacation time and dollars, so planning ahead can make sure you make the most of those. However, it is a vacation, so don’t stress, and have fun!

ME: What three things do I need to do right away?

Jodi: I’d recommend that you start out doing research on which parks you want to visit and how many days you want to visit the parks. Next, decide upon which restaurants you want to go to. The character meals, where Disney characters go from table to table greeting families one on one, are extremely popular with families with young children. To do this research, I’d recommend you look at the Walt Disney World Website, the Moms Panel, and various independent guidebooks, such as the Complete Idiots Guide to Walt Disney World, the Passporter, and the Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World.

Finally, call Disney Dining at (407)WDW-DINE up to 90-days prior to your arrival to make advanced dining reservations.

ME: My husband and I have to watch our budget. We had considered just going to Disney World for 3 - 5 days but do you think we should mix it up and go to the other parks?

Jodi: I think you should try to visit all four Disney theme parks — the Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom. While the park hopping option (which allows you to visit multiple parks in one day) does cost extra, it is worth it. You can definitely do the four parks in four to five days, especially if you go to one park in the morning and one park in the afternoon. All four of the parks have attractions that will appeal to your 4 and 6 year old children.

As for your budget, consider sharing snacks at the park (my kids love the popcorn, which is pretty filling), bringing your own bottles of water, and setting a souvenir budget for your children.

Good luck! You do need to do some planning, but don’t forget to leave some free time open. When we went, we had the whole week planned. Each day as we dashed past the inviting pool at our hotel, the kids kept asking “when can we stay here and go swimming?” Finally we decided to skip a day at a water park. Instead we hung out at the pool, did some shopping, some of the activities the hotel offered, and it was another great day.

Diane Luba; Plymouth, Connecticut

The Republican-American (www.rep-am.com): "interactive disney mom Plymouth fan on panel to aid orlando visitor"

BY KURT MOFFETT REPUBLICAN-AMERICAN

PLYMOUTH — Diane Luba's passion for Walt Disney World has led to her selection for an online panel that gives advice to vacation seekers who want to head there.

Luba, a town resident, is one of 16 new parents on the Walt Disney World moms panel. The interactive online forum offering free trip planning advice is in its second year.

Luba was among 10,000 applicants. She had to write a couple 100-word essays asking about her background and favorite moments at Disney World. She was surprised to be chosen considering the number of applicants.

"I wouldn't admit to being the best Disney expert, but I can certainly help," she said.

Luba belongs to several online Disney-related chat boards and visits many Disney-related Web sites. Last year she happened to be online when another user mentioned the new Disney forum.

She applied, but didn't make the cut. Last year's panel had just 12 members. She finished 26th among the applicants.

Laura Spencer, a Disney spokeswoman, said Luba was selected this year because of her knowledge of Disney, her many visits and her unique tips for navigating the parks. The panel was extended from 12 to 16 members because of its popularity among families looking for tips.

Luba, 46, said she's been to Disney World more than 20 times, the first when she was 18 and a recent 1980 graduate of Bristol Central High School. The rest have been with her husband, Michael, who is a sergeant with the local police department, and their three children: Brian, 17, Kevin, 14, and Jenn, 12.

She couldn't explain why she's so passionate about Disney World. She's never been to Disneyland in California. Disney World is much larger and her mother lives in Florida, so she's had no reason to travel west.

"I don't know if it's in my DNA or not," she said about her love for Disney World. "Once, we (she and her husband) went for our anniversary and when you work so hard, it's just good to unwind. It's a guaranteed good time for the money you spend. It seems like a new experience for us every time we go."

Luba said the family's favorite attraction is the Test Track at Epcot Center where they get a hands-on experience of General Motors testing new vehicles that are about to hit the market. It's a ride the entire family can enjoy together, she said.

Her favorite moment at Disney, so far, was watching her son, Brian, in August get an opportunity to sit in the driver's seat of the monorail that takes passengers to different parts of the park. Brian, she said, wants to operate one as part of a college program.

Luba's husband, Mike, said Disney World is a great vacation venue because it keeps all of his children happy.

"No matter what the weather is like, it's always a good time," he said.

Luba is entering her third week on the panel. Each member is required to answer 15 questions per week.

A project manager for Aetna in Hartford, she and the other members were nervous the first week because they know their answers are posted online for the entire world to view. She said they spent, on average, 30-45 minutes per answer — that's 7-11 hours per week. The second week she reduced that time to 20-30 minutes per answer.

Luba said users ask about the size of the crowds, the weather, Disney merchandise, dining plans and the resorts. She said the strangest question she's seen so far was from someone who wanted to know if he could bring his hermit crabs. The panelists were still researching an answer, she said.

The panelists aren't paid, but they do receive a free trip to Disney World for their family.

Luba advises people to "do their homework" and "at least have a rough itinerary of what you're going to do before you go." She said to look for online discounts on Web sites like www.DisneyWorld.com and www.mousesaves.com.

"I don't think I've ever paid full price," she said.

To visit the panel, go to www.disneyworldmoms.com.

Mom gets online 'job' for Disney World

By Linda Wilson Fuoco, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Amber Vaughan was a teenager when she fell in love with Walt Disney World in Florida.

She made her first two visits to the Orlando theme park with the West Greene High School marching band. She went back six more times as an adult.

Anyone who has visited the vast and sprawling Disney World knows that it's a daunting experience. On a typical family vacation, no one can see it all or do it all. Mrs. Vaughan has become very savvy at careful planning to make the most of whatever time she has.

Bob Donaldson/Post-Gazette
Amber Vaughan, with
husband Levi, daughter
Sophie, 3, and son Aiden,
7 months, has been named
to the Disney World
Moms Panel.

Her knowledge, experience and enthusiasm have landed her a much-coveted spot on the 2009 Walt Disney World Moms Panel. She beat out thousands of applicants from all over this county and foreign lands. The screening process included written essays and telephone interviews.

Mrs. Vaughan, 26, of Canton Township, is one of 16 parents who sit on an interactive online forum -- www.disneyworldmoms.com -- that offers free trip planning advice for Disney visitors. The 15 moms and one dad share their experiences and offer personal tips and strategies in a question-and-answer format.

"My Disney experiences have certainly run the gamut -- from traveling by car, bus, plane and auto train," Mrs. Vaughan said. She's visited with adults and with her husband, Levi, and their daughter, Sophie, who is now 3 years old. On her last Disney vacation, Mrs. Vaughan was seven months pregnant with the couple's son, Aiden, who is now 7 months old.

"My experiences have run the gamut, from riding all the rides to skipping the thrill rides and seeking out cool places to rest my feet. We have enjoyed leisurely meals in nice restaurants and the excitement and fun" of dining with the Disney characters.

Mrs. Vaughan has always shared her Disney tips with family and friends. Now she'll be doing that with a much bigger audience.

In 2008, the first year for the Walt Disney World Moms Panel, 12 women answered close to 12,000 questions online in their first 10 months on the job. The panel was expanded to 16 members this year.

There is no pay for the "job," but panel members got a free trip to Disney World last month for a training session. They started work on Monday. Mrs. Vaughan said she answered 25 questions so far.

Her interest goes beyond her own vacations. Mrs. Vaughan is working "very slowly but steadily" at earning an online degree in travel and tourism.

The moms panel is a perfect gig for a stay-at-home mom with two very young children.

"I can do this online when they are sleeping at night or napping during the day," she said.

Though Levi and Amber Vaughan did not honeymoon at Disney World, "I've converted him and we go back again and again."

Levi Vaughan is the head chef at the Union Grill in Washington, so he especially enjoys checking out the wide array of restaurants at the Disney resort.

Why does she keep going back?

"When you arrive there you feel like you are in another world," Mrs. Vaughan said. "Everyone goes out of their way to make your trip special. My daughter is a true princess and can be found wearing a ball gown and tiara on any given day. And when she meets the characters in Disney World, she thinks she's really meeting Mickey Mouse" and the others.

On the family's last Disney World visit, when Mrs. Vaughan was pregnant, the couple bought their boy "his first set of personalized mouse ears in preparation for his first official visit. I can't wait for him to wear them and meet Mickey in person!"

Wouldn't it be nice to have someone to ask how to plan a first time vacation to Walt Disney World in Orlando? After all, WDW, with its 47 square miles, could be intimidating. Now there's a place to turn, whether you're a first time visitor or seasoned veteran.

For the second year, WDW is sponsoring its Walt Disney World Mom's Panel. The panelists are parents who serve on an online forum, www.disneyworldmoms.com, answering questions and providing insight to potential park-goers based on their own experiences.

When Jennifer Delves Wilkes of Acworth heard about the panel, she immediately thought, "I can do that."

who is on the Walt Disney World
Moms Panel, sits in her home office

WDW recognized Wilkes as a Disney-savvy mom when they awarded her a place on their 2009 Walt Disney World Mom's Panel. She is one of only 16 parents from the U.S. and abroad selected to serve from thousands of entries.

"I've been helping my friends plan their Disney trips for a long time" said Wilkes, a Cobb native. She and her husband, Greg Wilkes, along with their daughters, Kendall , 11, Jordan, 11, and Ashton, 14, have "frequented WDW for the last 11 years and many of my friends started asking for my help," she said.

"You may not know which resort to stay at, how to get from point A to point B or how to use a Fastpass," Wilkes elaborates, "if you've never been, you could miss out on so much."

Wilkes has already fielded questions online such as whether December or March would be a better time to visit the park with schoolchildren, and how best for a single mother to navigate the park with her toddler.

Wilkes draws from her experience. "Having a toddler never stopped us from taking our yearly vacation to Disney; why should it stop you?"

"With 5-star restaurants, cruises at Epcot, fireworks and shows," she elaborated, "it's not just about the rides. There's something for everyone."

"You can do a Disney trip as expensive or as inexpensive as you want. For example," Wilkes says, "right now WDW is running a special on selected weeks until the end of the year for 40 percent off value rooms. The money shouldn't keep you from going.

"It's a special place for all families. That's what keeps us going back, and I just love it."

Although Wilkes has her collection of mementos from her Disney travels in her office, she doesn't go overboard - but you can tell she has an unwavering enthusiasm.

"So many of my family's favorite moments involve Disney." Her passion overflowed when she recalled her last vacation, "Kendall walked out of the Bippity Boppity Boutique and thought she was the princess of all princesses."

At home, Wilkes is the quintessential "mom" living the quintessential "normal" life. When she isn't occupied with children's activities or civic duties, Wilkes is busy working as a freelance marketing and public relations consultant. But in her Disney capacity, she has already met top WDW executives, including Meg Croft, President of WDW resorts.

Although Jennifer Wilkes may appear to lead a normal life, for her this year will truly be a magical experience. Your experience can be magical too - it's just a matter of asking Wikes a question at the 2009 Walt Disney World Mom's Panel. The answer could be the one you've been waiting for.

Those are all of the articles I've uncovered thus far about individual Panelists. (I'll post any others that I find in the future. Please feel free to do the same.)

Here's an article about the WDW Moms Panel that already might have been posted. (Oh! And, for the record: I've already caught one typo. "visitng" in the first sentence should be "visiting." ;) )

Walt Disney World Moms Panel...A New Way To Plan You Disney Vacation
12/9/2008

By: Bill and Donna

For anyone who has not yet heard about the Walt Disney World Moms Panel, it is one of the most innovative and new ways for anyone who has never been to Walt Disney World or who has a list of questions about the parks and services to get that information on a peer to peer basis. This new addition to the Disney website, www.disneyworldmoms.com consists of a panel of real Moms (And Dads) chosen for their knowledge and experience by Disney to help others in planning their dream Disney vacation. There are countless websites, books, blogs, podcasts and everything in-between offering advice and tips, but the best place of course is Disney's own Website and vacation planning experts who can literally plan your entire vacation from soup to nuts. But the Mom's panel is made up of real parents, Moms and Dads who have gleaned their knowledge of Disney from planning their own vacations and those of friends and family, and have personally been to Disney, some countless times who can answer questions with their "Personal Opinions and Advice".

MomsPan.jpg

I spoke to Laura Spence who is Disney's Social Media Manager, and she gave me a quick history of the program. Disney decided that who better to explain Walt Disney World to others than the planners of family vacations, the Moms, since research shows that the Moms in the family do most of the vacation plans. So a call to action was placed in September of 2007, saying if you're a mom or dad and have experience planning a Disney vacation, to submit an application. Laura states…"They thought they would get 30 or 40 applications, but more than 10,000 applied". Laura said the requirements for a Disney Mom was to answer three questions, one about yourself, about your family and your knowledge of Disney expertise, and if you passed the first requirement there was a round of more questions. She said that Disney was looking for people that "Jumped off the page", with personality and knowledge. Many of the applicants are well-known with family and friends as the "Disney Lady" or the "Disney Dad" and were asked to help with planning vacations because of their Disney know-how.

Public response to the new site has been "Wonderful" states Laura. I asked how were the questions answered and she said…"The questions are placed in a general queue and the Moms pick out the question they want to answer and you would get a reply in a day or so". One of the reasons the panel is popular is because the Moms are not giving facts and figures, but personal knowledge of the resorts, the restaurants, attractions etc. Many have children from infants to teens and can answer questions like, "Will my teen enjoy this attraction?", or "Is this resort closer to this park?" or "Will my toddler enjoy the Food at this eatery?" All the answers are from a personal view, And Disney encourages the Mom's to be honest in their answers.

The panel is chosen every fall for the coming year. Last year there were 12 moms, this year there are 16, one is a grandmother, one is from England and one from Canada, and one Mom will answer Disney Cruise Line questions exclusively. There is also a "Dad" on the panel. After being chosen, there is a 3 to 4 day training period. All the Moms work from home and are expected to answer at least 15 questions a week. The Moms are not Cast Members.

I had a wonderful opportunity to interview several of the Moms and all exhibited an eagerness and excitement to start and share their knowledge to others. I spoke to Doug Ingersoll from Carmel Indiana, father of two girls and the only "Dad" on this year's Panel. I posed the same question to all the panelists…"How did you gain you knowledge of Disney?" Doug stated…"I have been coming since I was a Kid" and he said he has been here at least "40 times". His friends know him as the "Disney Dad". Doug also explains that when his friends return from their trip, he gets much information and feedback from them, adding to his knowledge. I asked Karen from New Hampshire how does she feel about the upcoming year…"Very excited" and she stated that she has been at Walt Disney World "Too many times to count" She said she did the College program and that "Fueled her Passion about Disney" Much of her knowledge is from research, because she is such a big fan. "I believe I can help people with very young children who may be intimidated by the process and offer encouragement and support"

There are two international panelists, Joann from Ottawa Canada who saw the applications on-line. She said she has been coming to Disney since "I was 12 years old, my family would drive down and stay at Disney's Fort Wilderness" She also worked as a Cultural Representative at EPCOT in the Canadian Pavilion in 1985 and that helped her in much of her Disney "Know-How" and she said…"I have been to Disney more than 20 times and the best way to learn is by coming here and doing it, it's the best way" She is thrilled and excited about her new post.

So you can see that the excitement and energy level is high among the panelists, and they will add a brand-new and different dimension to planning your Disney "Dream Vacation" Log on to www.disneyworldmoms.com for complete information.

oh, my.
I've been gone from reality for so long. With our December trip to WDW, January vacation to WDW and aboard the Disney Wonder and then my trip aboard the Disney Magic, well you can just imagine how behind I am with household tasks. Plus I have some quality time to make up with my 9 year old son who I was away from for 8 nights. Oh, and hubby too, of course. The only good thing about a return to reality is seeing family AND planning my next vacation. LOL!

I have SO much reading to do here on DISBoards to get caught up on. I can't wait!

I've just returned from my 7 night training cruise so I'm even more prepared to answer DCL questions at disneyworldmoms.com.

I'm updating my blog as I can with details at:
http://stopamoment.typepad.com/
So I invite all of you to Stop A Moment and come over to take a look. I'll be putting up pictures over the next week or so.

I see my fellow panelists have been quite busy too. Oh, and yes, two officers on the ship that I spoke with know about DIS Boards!! :)
