Adventure (and Food) is calling our names – 10/2010 PTR - Six More Hours!!! 10/1

Today was our 180 day to make ADRs.

With all the excitement over the weekend I didn't have my paperwork together so when I looked online I accidentally booked the Hoop Dee Doo for the wrong date :confused3 I called WDW and the kind Cast Member was able to cancel the first reservation and book the correct date for the 9:30 show.

I then took a little more time to read the online booking page and noticed where I could input our reservation number so I could book for the dates we wanted and not only 180 days from today.

I was able to get all three ressies at the times we wanted. Maybe it's because it is so far out, or maybe we just didn't select really difficult restaurants, but I found the online tool really easy. Much better than sitting on hold on a long distance call.

We also changed the plan again for tickets. The website that I had originally looked at for annual passes didn't include taxes. Also, I had been pricing out park hoppers without expiration dates. When I eliminated that I found we could purchase 10 day PH passes (that expire) for about $100 less than the annual pass. So we will be purchasing the 10 day passes and use our GAD voucher for the Fast Passes.

The class schedule for next Fall classes have finally come out and in addition to figuring out what classes Brendan should take we need to take into consideration what days of the week the classes fall on so he will miss the least number of classes. He's going to try and talk to the instructors of the classes he wants to take before signing up and see what ramifications missing days will be on his grade and if he would be able to make up any work. Or if he should just take some non-culinary classes that wouldn't be so hands on OR see what Gen Ed classes are available as online classes. That way he could still do the work and get the credits he needs.

Hmmmm....

Okay, Jane, this may sound silly, but...

They do offer little classes during the F&WF. I wonder if Brendan could attend one and write a paper or something for some credit??

Kind of expensive... but if it helps him with a school conflict, it may be worth it.

Kathy,

Thanks for the great idea! I'll have to keep an eye on the schedule of events and see if there is anything that he could use (depending on the classes he takes) he wants to specialize in baking/pastry so if they offered something with that specialty he'd probably be thrilled to be able to attend.

At the very least the fact that he is going during F&W he might be able to use that to his advantage, maybe photograph and evaluate all the different desserts (aw, darn we might have to help him try them all out). Not good for the diet, but good for the sweet tooth.

We've made some minor adjustments to the ticketing again. We're going to use our GAD vouchers for one day passes and then upgrade them to at least 9 day PH passes. We figure that's the best use of the voucher. We were in the parks last October and we really didn't need to use FPs very often. It will also save us $79 on the price of each ticket. Every little bit helps.

On the ConGaloosh front it was announced that Lou Mongello will be be participating in the weekend. He'll be leading a meet at the Jungle Cruise on Saturday morning. Can't wait to hear all the information that he has to give on the queue area. I know there are some AC connections, but to hear all the history will be really interesting.

We are still up in the air about costumes for both MNSSHP and the ConGaloosh events. In thinking about the MNSSHP event, I'm almost thinking of doing something pretty easy. Maybe some cool t-shirts. I'll see if I can get Charlotte to design a cool design and then make some t-shirts.

Well Adventurers, time is clicking away and while it looks like all of our itinerary is pretty much set (pretty fluid – since we are trying to be flexible), I’m still trying to figure out a couple of things. Tickets and Shopping

Tickets:

Option 1 – Use our GAD vouchers to get into the MK on Saturday and then upgrade to either a 9 or 10 day park hopper pass. Cost for each ticket would be 9 day $231.98 or 10 day $235.18 (using the GAD voucher to reduce the price by $79)

Option 2 – Have the kids use their GAD vouchers (same scenario as above). Jim and I use the vouchers and then upgrade to Annual Passes. Cost for DVC annual pass: $335.29. We don’t know what the dates are for ConGaloosh 2011 but if we are lucky we could be back before the passes expire otherwise the benefits of any AP room rates and discounts for dinning really aren’t any better than the DVC discounts. I guess if the room rates were REALLY good we MIGHT consider going back earlier and not using our DVC points, and staying at a different resort but it would have to be an amazing discount to balance out the cost of the airline tickets. Other than that the only reason to get Annual Passes would be to say that we’ve had them.

Questions:

Option 1 – where do you upgrade the tickets – is it inside or outside the park? I was hoping to let Jim and the kids get into the park and then I would upgrade to the PH passes and then catch up to them.

Option 2 – Can we get the DVC discounted price for the annual pass if we use the upgrade with the GAD vouchers?

Shopping

Since we arrive after 6pm on Saturday we don’t want to spend time running to the grocery store and burning up time when we want to get our ticket situation figured out. I assume there won’t be ANY line at the ticket windows at 7pm so hopefully it would be a quick stop. Now the decision becomes do we use the DVC shopping list, Garden Grocer or WeGoShop. I’ve researched all the options and there are benefits/downsides to all of them.

DVC Shopping –

Down side: Really limited options. But we could just do the absolute BARE minimum – Milk and cereal and then on Sunday between lunch and hitting MNSSHP we could run to the store and get the rest of the supplies.

Plus side: The order would be inside the fridge when we get home that night and delivery is only $5

Garden Grocer:

Down side: While they have more options there were some items that we need that weren’t listed. Good coffee, activia yogurt and lots of pulp OJ. Since we are arriving later, we’d have to pick-up the food from the bell stand either as we are checking in or after we leave the park at 11:30pm.

Plus side: We would know exactly how much everything costs (including the delivery fee and tip).

WeGoShop:

Down side: Not knowing exactly how much the total will be and higher delivery fee and need to check to see if there is/isn’t a fee to charge the items to a credit card since we WILL have to have them leave the items with the bell stand. We’d have to pick-up the food from the bell stand either as we are checking in or after we leave the park at 11:30pm.

Plus side: Being able to pick EXACTLY what we want in the quantity that we need.

I’ve emailed Garden Grocer to see if I can add items not listed online to my list. If the answer is yes, then we’ll probably go with them.

We are still undecided about costumes. I'm leaning more towards just making some t-shirts for MNSSHP and making life easier.

I know its been a long time since my last post - did I lose everyone? I hope not. What does everyone think we should do for tickets and shopping? Please de-lurk. If there is some conversation I'll promise to post more often.

(knocking on screen) is anyone out there still reading this? It appears from the views that there are some readers (or at least there were). Please de-lurk and let me know you are out there. Comment on anything, should I post more pics? Write about past trips? Anything???? I'm starting to get a complex that I'm boring or even worse..

I decided to email Garden Grocer and ask them if it was possible to order items that were not listed on their site. I got a response the very next day.

"If you are unable to locate items on our websites what you can do is during checkout you will see a blank box for messages/comments. In that box, just type in the brands, quantity, and sizes you would like to receive. There are no gaurentee's that we will be able to find these items for you, however if the items can typically be found at local grocery store or even target or walmart, we should have no problem picking up the items."

So I think that we will be going with Garden Grocer. When we arrive I'll go check us in and Jim will head to the Bell Stand and get the groceries.

I also figured out what I'm going to do for an easy/lightweight costume for both the First night of ConGaloosh and MNSSHP. I'll post some clues and pics of the work in progress.

I'm missing the AC so just spent some time on YouTube. In case you've never been, check out this clip of a new member induction ceramony.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-yMSUoLlpxc

If you ever visited the club - what was your favorite character and/or what was your favorite song? I'll post mine tomorrow...

I am still here! And I find reading your PTR very interesting. Can't wait to hear your costume idea. We used Garden Grocer in '08 and loved it!

Sue - Thank you for responding - good to know I haven't put everyone to sleep.

Its funny but when I'm not on the computer I can think of a ton of things to write about, but put me at the keyboard and I can't remember anything.

We had a small Disney moment today. We went to the Outlet stores and made a small detour to have "lunch" at a Fenton's Ice Cream Parlor. Jim and I split a soup/salad combo before we dove into the ice cream. I got a "Small" scoop of mint chocolate chip ice cream with hot fudge and Jim got a Black and Tan. Definitely NOT on the weight loss program, but Oh so good!!! I wish I had my camera to show you all. Next time I'm going to have to go with the "petite" size scoop.

I forgot to mention that Brendan's GF Charlotte and her family moved back into the area last weekend. They are so thrilled to no longer have a long distance relationship. Charlotte also got her drivers license so they are both mobil and within 15 minutes of being together. Of course that means that we rarely see the boy, but after 2+ years of living 2 hours apart I can understand. They are just so cute together.

Brendan finally registered for his Fall classes. He decided to hold off on the intensive baking class since we found out that the last week of the class is the week we will be gone. Missing finals would not be a good thing. So he is going to take some business pre-requisites and some culinary classes. His schedule is a little all over the place, but he'll make it work. Plus Charlotte will be at the same school so anytime he doesn't have class he'll be hanging out with her. They both plan on job hunting for summer jobs. Brendan has been at McD's for almost a year, but is looking for something that is more culinary related (hopefully as a baking assistant).

I spoke to Charlotte today about helping me with my costume idea so instead of trying to find pictures on the web, she is going to draw them for me. That way everything will have a similar look and feel. She is and absolutly amazing artist. She was able to draw these for us for last year:

scan0003.jpg

scan0004.jpg

She drew the Mickey and Minnie with just pictures of the actual cast in their costume. I'm just amazed at her talent.

Just got a call from Brendan - he and Charlotte were out driving to get some Starbucks and saw the after affects of a huge house fire. The got out of the car and promptly locked the keys in the car. Now if this were the first time this happened, it wouldn't be a problem, but this isn't even the first time today that he has locked himself out of something (earlier today it was the house). Jim just went to take him an extra key. Hopefully he'll learn a lesson and FINALLY get that spare key that he has promissed he was going to get for his wallet. He's a wonderful kid, but when I picked up the phone my first question was "are you lost?" because even thought he's gone to Charlotte's every day since she moved up here, he's not driven the same way home more than once and one time even had to call and ask for directions home. We joke that he needs to keep the GPS in his car at all times, but honestly we don't want him to become reliant on it. The one thing that Scouts wasn't able to teach him was a good sence of direction. Thank goodness for cell phones and extra keys.

I was going to say that since not much was happening on the trip planning front I was going to insert a mini-TR from our May trip last year. That was nothing much was happening until this afternoon.

I was sitting here finally getting caught up on the boards (our internet has been down since Tuesday) when I get a call from “Out of Area”. I figured it was a telemarketer, but picked it up anyway. It was a call from American Express calling to tell me that our Virgin America flight has been cancelled. VA has discontinued service from SFO to MCO, but we could change the flights to fly directly to Ft. Lauderdale. What??? Ah, I don’t think so that’s a couple of hours away. The other option was for them to fully refund our ticket prices. Great, now I get to find new flights and pray that they are reasonably priced.

The best flights and prices were on Southwest. Of course this is an airline that you can’t book from the AE website AND we had used membership reward points to reduce the price of the flights and I was worried that we would lose that discount. Back on the phone again – gee surprise to talk to an agent to book a Southwest flight using reward points you have to call Monday – Friday.

I had to call Member services back a couple more times before I could speak to a physical human and find out that once you redeem your points they are non-refundable (it shows up as a credit on your statement) so I could just purchase the Southwest tickets online without having to deal with the membership rewards points people.

Anyway we FINALLY have our flights booked. Of course had we gone with Southwest originally a couple of months ago we could have gotten cheaper flights, but the prices only went up by about $58 more than the VA flights so I guess it could have been worse. Goodbye nice leather seats, free entertainment and most importantly non-stop flight from San Francisco. Hello Southwest airlines – 24 hour ahead frantic boarding check-in, hopefully funny flight attendants, one stop for each direction (Albuquerque and Phoenix) and free checked bags.

Now I’ll need to go and edit our car rental reservation. Hopefully the rate doesn’t jump a lot.

I'm still working with Charlotte on our costumes for MNSSHP and ConGaloosh 2010.

Last time I asked if you had a favorite AC character/song. It might be because we spent so much time in both Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, but my favorite character has always been Emile and my favorite song of his from the Hoopla (hoopla) is:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aY1zY7FQgIE

This is my favorite rendition of the song. I just love how little Christian knows the entire song and all the actions. Enjoy!

Hi Jane!!

Glad you got your flights sorted - nightmare!

Do you know it was a year ago yesterday (15th) that we met at Raglan Road, and a year ago today that we boarded the Disney Magic! Wish we were there now . . .! Are you planning on going to RR this year? We are - I just love their food!

What sort of costume are you having for MNSSHP? I got my Alice costume this week - I can't wait!! Its our first MNSSHP!!!:cool1:

Wow, that stinks that you lost your VA flight! I fly Southwest all the time. I have one suggestion - they now allow early bird checkin. It is $10 each way, which would effectively add $20 to each ticket (so that may be more than you're willing to do), but once you elect it, you don't have to worry about the 24-hour ahead check-in. At first, I didn't use it, but I am now finding that lots of people are using it and even when I check in exactly 24 hours ahead, I am getting very high A numbers (like A48-60ish). This is usually still fine if the flight originates where you start, but it isn't good if your flight is a connection coming in from somewhere else, when the plane might already be half full.

I haven't reserved our rental car yet. I guess I better get on that!

Hi Sonia!

Jim and I were just talking about it being one year ago we were in FL and how we wish it could be an annual occurance - sadly we have to wait till October. We don't have plans for RR this year, but that Shepards Pie is calling to me, so we may have to make a trip over there.

The costume is still under discussion. It will be Adventures Club related (so I can use it for both). It will be artwork on a shirt since I don't want to be hot while running around. You will be an adorable Alice and I think I remember you saying that Tony agreed to be the Mad Hatter. Perfect for the two of you. Have you got a PTR started? I didn't look on your signature. If so, I'll have to jump on it and see what your plans are.

Hi! I have heard about the early bird check-in. I'll probably do that just so we don't have to mess around with the 24 hour pose in front of the computer. $20 per ticket is well worth avoiding the hassle. Especially when you are trying to do the check-in for the flight home and have to find an internet connection instead of visiting a park. I've had luck getting A30s but that was when the system first started, I'll bet more people are taking advantage of it now.

We're always worried when we have connecting flights. We've spent too many times running through terminals trying to make it to the gate when the layover time was really short and then the flight was delayed. There was that one miserable time when we were the last to board the plan and had to sit in some seats that actually faced other passengers (I've never seen a configuration like that again) and that flight was the one that circled the airport for 45 minutes before landing. :scared1: We thought we were never going to land.

Jim found his notes from the May trip and I have some pictures to jog my memory so if you all don't mind I'll start working on a mini-TR from last May. I'll get to see if my memory is any good and it will help me know what to take notes on to do a good TR for this year.

Ok so here's an update on Early Bird Check-In. I did it for my trip this week. Today, I had A33 for both of my flights. That was nice. EXCEPT that at Austin, I was selected right out of the line by TSA for random ID/Boarding Pass check. There was no warning that they might do this, so I didn't have my ID handy. It took only about 60 seconds out of my day, but it meant I boarded around A45 or so. I could have gotten that without paying the extra $10, so I was a little frustrated. I still got a window seat near the front of the plane though, so I shouldn't complain.

I agree that it would be very convenient not to have to check in 24 hours in advance for the return flight when you're at WDW.

I have seen that back-facing configuration a few times, but not in the past couple of years.

Susan - how frustrating for you! Pay the extra cash and then get delayed boarding. I was wondering if I should just do the early bird for two of us and then "save" seats for the other two, but I don't think the extra hassle will be worth it. Do you know if it makes any difference how far out you purchase the early bird - I wonder if they rank it in order of purchase?

The back facing seating was so terrible. Steven was sitting face forward in the middle seat and Brendan and I had the aisle and middle seat facing backwards. Once we started circling the airport Brendan was getting REALLY tired and cramped (he was about 8-9) and started to just quietly cry. We had him put his feet up on Steven's seat and was able to stretch out a bit. I just remember it was quite a lot like that scene from Jon & Kate + 8 when they were flying and they were delayed and Kate just sits there and says "I'm done" boy do I know that feeling.

Well since there isn’t much planning left to do on this trip, I thought I’d post some memories and pics from our anniversary trip from last year. - I wrote this before the airline ticket drama - hopefully there isn't any more drama waiting for us and I can get through our whole two week trip before October.

It was one year ago that Jim and I were celebrating our 25th anniversary with a fantastic week long trip to WDW followed by a 7 night Disney cruise. The boys didn’t go with us this trip, but we were meeting up with my good friend Cliff from High School for a couple of days in Florida. He moved to Houston a couple of years ago so getting a chance to visit with him in the world was a bonus. We booked a studio at OKW (our home resort) and he was staying at Fort Wilderness – this worked out well since we each had our space and could spend time together and have our separate time.

For past vacations, being the planner that I am, we have everything planned out (park, rides, restaurant/counter service location, etc) it can be pretty intense. Since this was supposed to be a relaxing trip I scaled back on the plans. We only had a couple of reservations and figured we’d just wing it. I was a little worried, would I go into planning withdrawal? Would not having ADRs backfire on us? Would I be able to find diet friendly food?

Our flight from Oakland departed at 6:55am. We left the house around 4:30am, dropped off the rental car (it was cheaper to rent a car for one day/one way rental to drive to the airport than long term parking and easier than taking a shuttle).
IMGP0057.jpg

Jim on the rental car shuttle to the airport

We arrived in Florida on May 9th. The flight from Oakland to Florida was pretty uneventful. We changed planes in Phoenix but had a hard time finding something edible (and healthy) in the airport.
IMGP0058.jpg

Benjamin Bear has traveled with us since 1986, he's a great travel companion and even brings his own laptop to keep him occupied on the flight

By the time we arrived in Florida we were pretty starving. We hit WalMart and picked up supplies (yogurt, fruit, coffee, sunscreen, etc) then called Cliff and made plans to meet up with him up to go to dinner. We had done the online check in so our room was ready – we had requested a room near the Hospitality House and got one that backed up against the woods so it was really quiet. We decided to stay close and went to Olivia’s for dinner. Unfortunately, I didn’t keep any records of my food on this trip, nor did I take many food porn pics. We had a good dinner and got caught up with Cliff’s life. We decided to head over to the Poly and watch Wishes from the beach. It was on my wish list for this trip so we drove over there, found a spot on the beach, purchased some nice frozen beverages and actually saw the DIS meet for the Podcast cruise. I felt like such a stalker – I wasn’t brave enough to crash to meet anyone, but it looked like they were having a great time.

Trying out the nighttime feature on the camera - not too good

Warm sand!
After the fireworks were over we headed back to OKW. We made it an early night to try and head off jet lag.

Coming up – Epcot and Flower and Garden Festival and AC Cast sighting!

I think it must make a difference how far out you purchase the Early Bird. I know you can buy it at the time you make the reservation. For this one, I just bought it when they sent me a reminder email last Friday. So I was probably one of the last people to buy it.

Thanks Sonia! I'm having fun looking at all the pictures again. I now know that I need to take MORE pictures so I can remember exactly what we did. I did take some food pics, but not as many as on the October trip.

I've got the next installment all typed up, just have to paste it here and link the photos. But first have to go to our cooking class.
