ADR's for possible no-shows?

Hi, we'll be at WDW during Memorial Day week, 2009. Our 180 day window is on November 24. We'll be staying at a Boardwalk 2 bedroom suite that has a max limit of 8, but there's only 5 of us so we might invite some friends but we don't know for sure if they will be able to make it. It's totally up in the air at this point.

My question is whether I go ahead and book reservations for 8 people at the 180 day window and then scale it down to 5 people closer to the actual vacation, if they will out and out cancel my previous reservation before making the adjustment and I take the chance of losing the reservation all together.

Or would it be better to book the ADR's with 5 people and then try to add 3 more and ask if we can be seated near each other. If it's not possible, at least the 5 of us can still get to experience the restaurants that we had definitely wanted to try.

I'm sure other people have encountered this issue, since it seems like most people in the world are spontaneous vacationers, rather than hardcore pre-planners like myself.

You cannot just drop/add people from/to a reservation, it is cancelled and rebooked with the number of participants. There is a risk that there won't be another reservation with the number you need.

Unfortunately this is the risk that needs to be considered. Personally, I'd just make the reservations for the number you know are going and then let the other party figure out their own (and see if you can get reservations together when they make up their mind).

not sure you will be able to book on November 24/180 day window. Better keep checking these boards as to when the new system will be up & running. I'm hoping they're up for the 180 day window by then, because that'll be close to my 180 mark too.
