My son and his wife and just found out that they can't have natural children due to her medical problems. I was wondering if they can adopt a child without being a member of a church? Neither of them is very religious. Would this be a problem?

I dont know. Maybe if they adopted a child that was from a non christian family?

That shouldn't really be a problem at all. It might limit them as to the agencies they can go through, but even some Christian agencies will place children with families who aren't Christian. You can even adopt babies through the government.

thanks Kermit and Lil_Tink. I think they lean towards adopting a little girl from China, but not sure. I don't want to pry too much into this personal decision.

Nope, you don't have to belong to a church. If they go domestically and wait to be picked by a birthmom, the birthmom may want to know if they are/ what they are and it may or may not help her make the decision. It should have no effect on adopting internationally. Obviously there are some religious agencies, but I think they are becoming smaller these days. It was a non-issue with our agency and they do both domestic and international adoptions. Good luck to them! :goodvibes It's worth the wait!

There is a place here in the Chicago called The Cradle. It has tons of info and I bet if you called them, they could give you a number of a similar place out by you. They do domestic and international adoptions.

The other way is to contact a family lawyer and inquire about private adoption. My DAunt and Uncle have gone both routes and were successful both times.

Good luck to your DS and DDIL!

Thank you all. I will give all this info to the kids. I'm very grateful.

my sister and I were both adopted and our parents weren't members of any church.

We adopted our son from South Korea (he's 18 now) and we did not have to belong to any church.

Good luck - adopting him was the best and most important decision of my life. He's a freshman in college now and 300 miles from home - WE MISS HIM!!

My sister and her DH adopted 2 years ago from China and church membership was not a requirement. They used the Gladney adoption group. They are adopting again and I think they are going through Hope Adoption this time.

Absolutely not! You do not need to be a certain, or any, faith to adopt a child. There are many different agencies that cater to certain religions, but also many that are not religious at all. Good luck to them!
I am an adoptive parent and it has been wonderful. :sunny:

The birthparents sometimes request that the adoptive parents be a certain religion, ie Catholic or Lutheran, and request that the child be brought up in said religion.
