Currently we are considering doing an add-on to our existing contract. Is there any disadvantage to buying an add-on with a different use year than our current contract ??

I understand we would have 2 membership numbers, but I am told that we can combine points from multiple membership numbers when making a reservation. Is this correct ??

Are there other things we should/must consider ??

Thanks, in advance for your advise !!

First of all, let me welcome you to the DIS Boards! You've come to the right place to get your DVC questions answered by a bunch of experts!

While we're waiting for them to show up, I'll give your questions a shot... ;)

You will have separate banking deadlines, so it does take a little more work. We have two contracts with two UY and use a spreadsheet and Dave Frederick's DVC Manager software to help keep them straight.

I'm assuming you are purchasing at the same resort as your original contract? If so, then I believe you can utilize the combined contracts as long as you have points available from each one to make the reservation. Frankly, it will be a little tricky for MS so make sure you confirm all transactions and point balances after each reservation.

For a combined reservation, you can reserve some days from one contract, and other days from the other contract. But you cannot use points from both contracts for a single day. eg, 5 days 1-br OKW Dream season is 20 pts/day or 100 pts total. You can do 20 pts contract 1 and 80 pts contract 2, or 40/60 or 60/40 or 80/20. You cannot use 75 pts from one contact and 25 from the other. A second option would be to transfer points from one contract to the other, then make the whole reservation from one contract.

Welcome to the DIS.
Disney will NOT sell you an add-on with a different UY. You would need to buy a resale "add-on".

BILLPA is correct. Just did an add-on today, Disney added on with same UY

Actually, they could buy from Disney with a different use year if they wanted to. It would just have to be 150 point minimum. You might do that, for instance, if you wanted to 'add-on' at BCV, and they didn't have any points available with your use year, but they did have other use years. Usually, however, people who 'added-on' with a different use year bought resale.

Keep in mind also that add-on contracts are combined to get a total that banking percentages are based on. Look at the two scenarios below:

1. An OKW 200 point contract and a 200 point SSR Add-on. This is considered a 400 point contract. At the 50% banking window, assuming you haven't banked anything, you may bank up to 200 points (50% of 400)

Say you used all 200 OKW points. You can still bank all 200 SSR points.

2. Same situation, but a 200 Point OKW contract and a separate use year 200 point SSR Contract. In this case the points are not combined to determine banking percentages.

Say you used all 200 OKW points. At the 50% banking window, you can only bank 100 SSR points. (50% of 200) The other 100 points become a use it or lose it situation.

As for transfers, keep in mind you can only transfer into an account, or out of an account, within the same year. You cannot do both.

So in the example above, you could transfer points from SSR to the OKW account, but you could not later that same year transfer points from OKW to SSR. You would have to wait until the next year.

As mentioned, points cannot be combined directly to make a single day's reservation. Even when not combined, you wind up making two reservations. In one example posted earlier, say you used 40 points from one contract to make a 2-day reservation, and then 50 points from the other to make the remaining 5-days. These are two separate reservations. You then link the two reservations together so you don't have to move.

I've owned as many as 3 use years and it was never a large problem. However, for a small contract it simply doesn't make sense for many of the reasons listed above. Yes you can make separate reservations and link them. And you can combine points for a single night, even banked or borrowed points, in many cases. MS has significantly more latitude when working with multiple contracts of a single owner.
