Hey some of you might remember me from a thread i started about budgeting for a move to FL. Well im moving in the Fall and living with two people. My friend's(Heidi) sister(jess) and her friend (josh). Josh is already down there and has been staying with Heidi since April. Jess is moving the begining of Sept and im not going down there til Oct. Me and Jess are looking at places online and sending Heidi and Josh to check them out. Jess has to move in somewhere when she gets there since she has a dog and cant stay with Heidi.

So my question is if they can just add me to the lease when i get there. From what im reading it seems like it would be ok as long as the landlord is ok with it. We would tell them when they first sign the lease and i am willing to give them my info so they can do background/credit checks on me. Has anyone had expireince with something like this

There is no reason for you not to be on the lease in the first place. Fax signatures are binding and legal so that you can actually be considered to be a "tenant" as opposed to merely an "occupant." If you don't want to be legally responisble for something that would be sight unseen to you, you can be listed as one of the people with intent to live on premises from the very beginning, that is the "occupant" status.

My wife's roommate when she was in college was a psycho.. she left and I came in.. I got added to the lease without issue. As long as you clear the checks and have income, you should be ok.

The landlord can require you to sign the lease or to not live there and it is his choice, not yours and not the choice of anyone else living there.

You must give your social security number and okay the pulling of your credit report if the landlord requests.

When you sign the lease, you are "jointly and severally responsible" which means that if for any reason no one else on the lease comes up with the full rent, you yourself can be held responsible for the entire shortfall.

I was thinking this too. That way i can read over the lease before i get there incase there is anything i wouldnt want to agree to. My mom had a student whose landlord charged him $10 when he had an overnight guest. I wouldnt want to get there and not sign and leave my friends without another roomate
