Adding Points In Same UY month vs. Different UY month

Our current UY is June for our 200 points at BLT. Can someone please explain the advantages and disadvantages to have the same June UY at BCV for points we are adding on vs. having an April UY for these new points? I have seen some comments about being in the same account as an advantage, but it is not real clear to me. Thanks.

If you add points with a different UY Month, it will be as a new membership (different member number). You would not be able to easily combine the points for use on a single reservation. To use points from both for a reservation you would need to do one of the following:
  • Transfer points from one membership to the other. The transferred points will retain their original home resort and UY.
  • Make separate reservations and then have DVC link them as a 'Continuing Stay'.
If you add points with the same UY Month and it's titled exactly the same as your existing contract(s), they will be added as a sub-contract to your existing membership. If all of your points fall under a single membership, you can combine them easily for a single reservation. If you have different home resorts, you can't combine the points until 7 months from check-in.

So it sounds like we should focus on June as our UY month to stay consistent with our existing contract. Will the company we go through for the resale make sure it is titled the same as our existing points?

They should. You could always print off a copy of your deed from the Orange County Comptroller website and send to the closing company so they'll be sure it is titled the same, and have them make a note of your current membership number.

One problem with this strategy is you can only transfer once per year per account -- in or out. So if you do one transfer from BLT to BCV you are done for the year -- you have transferred once using each account...from BLT, to BCV. Done.

The other problem with this -- as I outlined in your other thread -- is that transferring points is a perk which could be changed or eliminated at any time. When we first joined, unlimited transfers were allowed. DVC arbitrarily changed that policy and now only one is allowed.

Somewhere down the road, DVC, with no input from members, could decide that transfers are a PITA that costs money, or affects their business model, or are simply a nuisance -- and they could eliminate them entirely like Wyndham did several years ago.

Do yourself a favor and keep it simple. Keep everything in one account.

Different use years can be appropriate if you use that contract for a specific trip at the same time each year, and use only that contract's points. For example, if you take a summer vacation and book at your home resort 11months out, but also take a food & wine trip every October. You could use your BLT/June contract for summer trips and a BCV/October contract for Food & Wine.

If you have specific, separate trips, get an appropriate use year for each. But, if you want the flexibility to combine points as needed, look for the same use year.

As a rule you should keep them the same. The advantages far outweigh the disadvantages assuming they will be titled the same. However if you own a bad UY for you and are looking at a full sized contract, it might be an advantage for different master contracts which is required if it's a different UY. With different masters you get more wait lists and more transfer options to others or from others. You also may get the chance to title them differently, say add adult children to one account but not the other. Still most people are better off keeping them the same master if possible due to ease of use and combining points at 7 months out.

We have two UYs and they were each for different home resorts, so I treated them as completely separate entities and always used the 11 month window and never needed to combine them. Everything was very easy :thumbsup2.

Well, then I added on direct from Disney and now the resorts are mixed up because I was on a waitlist and took the first UY that came up. Then I bought a resale and mixed them up even more. Now I have both resorts in both UYs and it is harder to manage. It would be fine if each resort had it's own UY, but now I have to think a lot harder :headache:. I was able to do a transfer to myself this year to complete a reservation, and the CM told me that I could transfer again only if it was to complete a reservation. I'm hoping that is true in case I need to combine 13 points in one UY with 3 points in the other UY.

My plan will probably be to sell one UY and simplify my life :).

I have two contracts at the same resort and both are DEC UY. Considering more points in the near future. I were to add on a different resort but same UY, it would still be the same member #, correct? Would there be a need to transfer points from one resort to another if the UY and member # is the same?

Titled the same, same UY should all be under one login, one membership. The new contract would be listed as .002 under your contracts.

You can combine your points at 7 months without the trouble of a transfer.

Perfect - that's what I was hoping! I keep looking for the perfect resale Dec. UY contract and it might take a while.
