Adding 25-50 direct points

I understand that once you're a member, you can add on direct 25-50 points at a time (depending on resort and how you're paying). Does this only apply if you've already bought the initial 150 direct points? Or, if you buy 150 resale points, can you then add on 25-50 direct points at a time?

(I am assuming you can't add 25-50 direct points at a time when you've bought less than 150 resale points, right?)

You can add the 25-50 direct points if you're a member no matter where you bought your points initially.

Thanks! But you have to have 150 points total before you can add on 25+ direct, right?

No i bought resale and can add 50 points at anytime.
How many points did you buy resale? For example if you buy 50 points resale, do you become eligible to start buying direct points in 25 point increments? (This seems too good to be true…)

Once you are a member, it doesn't matter how many points you have via resale. So you could buy a 50pt resale contract and then buy 50pts direct.

The number of resale points that you have is immaterial. If you own points, you're a member. If you are a member and want to add direct points, then your only limitations are the minimum number set by DVC for each resort. Therefore, you can have as few as 25 resale points and be able to purchase the minimum number of direct points, although I'm at a loss as to what the logic would be behind such a move.

Wow! Thanks all. Had no idea this was the case. The thinking is potentially buying a smaller resale contract to start (maybe 75-100pts) then adding on gradually (hopefully direct, so someday we’ll accumulate enough points for a blue card).

Why not just purchase direct right out of the gate if blue card status is your eventual goal? Some resorts such as SSR and OKW have a minimum purchase of 50 points for new members. A few others are at 75 or 100 points.

I got 50 resale. Thought it was what I wanted. Turned out it was what I wanted to spend at the time. So I hopped back in for 25 direct. I wanted to have 2 nights (bank/borrow) once in awhile at a new resort or other options if traveling abroad. Plus the backpack, hello!!!

I ended up getting 100 more resale at a different property later. I love me some small contracts.

We purchased 50 points resale 15 years ago then added on another 50 direct due to the closing costs involved in buying HHI. (You must use an attorney due to SC law which will increase your cost per point, FYI. After that, direct vs. resale was pretty much a wash.) We then added another 35 direct at HHI (got that backpack too!) and finally 150 resale for BRV 2 years ago.

We started pre Disney 125 point requirement when buy in direct was 150 points. We don't plan to add anymore to retain the blue card. By buying resale we were able to buy more points than we would have direct for our BRV contract. The difference was $50 per point.

So our thinking is, we’d like to buy soon, so our near-term trips aren’t just sunk costs. Makes sense for us to have fewer points right now because we are comfortable in a studio, and we’d rather not finance - but we can’t pay for 150 direct points cash right now. We thought we’d get the contract that makes sense for us now via resale/cash and plan to add on as our needs change and as we can add on direct points purchased with cash. Hopefully one of these days we’ll work our way up to a blue card! Although by that time it’ll probably be 1000 direct points for a blue card or something like that :)

To add 25 points direct you must pay cash. To add 50 points you can finance or pay cash. Does not matter what type of member you are. You can slowly add points to get to the 150 for the blue card if desired if you are a resale buyer

You can use a Chase Disney card for direct purchases at 6 months no interest. That's the same as cash to Disney. Or at least you used to be able to. Anyone know if that's still the case? If so, that's what we'd do to add on another 25-35 points. Not in the plan right now.

Lol I don’t have to respond they got it! But yeah you just have to be a member. Number of points don’t matter

Keep in mind that the resale process is extremely long. Even after you have paid for your contract and the deed has been recorded (can be a 3-month wait to reach that point) it can be weeks before DVC creates your account and loads your points.

Again, I'll ask if you have considered purchasing a small 50-100 points direct just to start. You would get your points almost immediately and can begin planning your Welcome Home trip right away. The price difference between resale and direct is not that great right now. And you would be part-way to being a blue card member.

I’ve asked my guide multiple times and always been told the minimum initial purchase direct is 150. Otherwise I’d definitely buy a small direct contract to start!
You're basically in the same boat as me. 150 points is like $30,000+ direct right now. Personally I don't want to spend that much so I went for a 50 point contract resale that was under $10,000 then maybe some day I'll add on to it direct. I just wanted to get my foot in the door so to speak without spending a ton of money at first.

That's my thought exactly. Kind of wished we would have bought when the minimum was 100, but at the time, I wanted only 75.
