Has anyone had any experience with Acupuncture? I'm considering getting it for PMDD. I was wondering not only if it worked, but if it's uncomfortable at all. I would love to here anyone's experiences.

I'm using it right now to enhance my fertility, and I've definitely noticed good changes in the workings of my body.

It *can*, sometimes, hurt just a little bit, but just relax and it'll calm down. Once the needles are in, try to not move. When you tense muscles during a treatment, it can hurt.

But really, the needles are so thin you can barely see them, and the point is NOT to hurt at all. My son had an appointment, and we thought he was only going to have acu*pressure*, but she put two needles in his forearms, and he just said it felt tingly and that was it.

I have two bulging discs in my lower lumbar and acupuncture was the only thing that helped. When it first happened I could not bend over at the waist nor could I put my chin down at all. After the very first treatment it started going away.

I did treatments once a week for a month, then every other week and then once a month. I was a non-believer but now absolutely swear by it!!

Since my move I have been trying to find a local dr but none quite measure up to my old one. I think I was spoiled by the 15 min massage at the end of my sessions ;) I fly back to TX once a month and that is always the first thing I do.

Give it a try...it might really help!!

BTW- For people who have/do acupuncture how is it done for you? My Dr. puts the needles in and then hooks a couple of them up to this little machine that sends electric impulses down to the nerves. You then relax in a darkened room with spa music playing and a heat lamp on. I have not had any luck finding one up here that does that. They only put the needles in...which I did not have the same results. It worked just did not last as long.

Would this Dr be in Frisco by any chance?
This summer my mom and I tried acupuncture for weight loss. We both had a little weight to lose and thought we would give it a try. The treatment above was the same for us- needles attached to some kind of electrical current. heta lamp, dark room w/ soothing music.
Did not lose 1 single pound! :rotfl:

I think it really depends on the practitioner. I had 10 apts. with one practitioner, and every time he put one in my ankle I thought I was going to hurl. He also did cupping and chinese five star needle (or something like that). It did not help my back pain at all.
I very reluctantly agreed to see a different practitioner at a different office, and my back felt amazingly better after only three sessions! Oh, and the needles didn't hurt even when they were inserted in the same place as the original acupuncturist.
So, if it doesn't work, you might try someone else before you give up on it completely.

I had acupuncture just once for the pain of shingles. I was certain it would not make a difference and walked out with 90% of my pain gone.

I found the act of lying face down miserable and caused my already resounding head to want to explode, but the needles were almost not noticeable.

Obviously, the type of pain I was experiencing is far different than yours, but I do believe that acupuncture has validity.

DW and I have been going to the same acupunturist for years. At first, we went because he is also an excellent masseur, but now and then he would suggest acupuncture for various aches and pains, or even just plain stress. We were both very much sceptics, but whatever the secret is, it definitely works for us!

As logandsol said, it depends on the practitioner. There seems to be any number of techniques, and it takes long study to master any of them. It's not just a matter of grabbing a few needles and jabbing them in. From what I can figure, you have to know what kind of needles (the thinner the better), exactly where the critical points are, and what pattern to use.

Well, I went and got it. I have to say that as I was driving home I felt this weird calm come over me, like I had just done really intense yoga. The acupuncturist also gave me some herbal formula. I've been taking it for a few days, and so far so good.

The whole needle thing freaks me out, but I'm glad to hear of those who are getting pain relief from it. :)

I believe it can work very well - in certain circumstances.. I've seen some amazing things accomplished.. (Both with people and pets..)

I only tried it once - and for my particular issue it didn't work.. However, that's not to say it wouldn't work for a different issue - and I would not be the least bit reluctant to try it again..

Personally I find it more efficient (and covering a much broader spectrum) than chiropractors..

Acupuncture did wonders for my seasonal allergies. Unfortunately, my acupuncturist moved out of state and I haven't been able to find someone else that I like and doesn't charge an arm and a leg (my insurance doesn't cover it).

There was one spot on my ankles that would sting a little when she hit it just right but it only lasted a few seconds.
