ACT vs. SAT

So athletes, minorities and kids from poorer families can't get in on their academics. Got it...:confused3

My guess is the ones with the lower scores are the rich ones with the connections, rather than the athletes and those that fill in the quotas.

My friend's friend wanted to go to the University of Illinois. He was a star football player but had poor grades. They lowered the bar for him and told him if he could score a 17 on his ACT he was in. He took the test 3 times and couldn't score a 17. They did not let him in.

Now if my unathletic child scored a 17, there would be no way in heck they would let him in. Not fair, not fair at all. But then again, life isn't always fair.

Oh grow up==yes, some athletes can get in on academics but that is NOT always the case and often that is where the exception is often made. Also, I never said anything about minorities--I said demographic information which TOTALLY different. It could simply be admitting someone from a rural town vs a suburban town or someone from out of state vs instate. Don't jump to conclusions.

Great news! Congratulations to your DD~

A 24 is awesome in 7th grade. Congrats to her.

Thanks! I was just posting an update and didn't mean for everyone to argue. We are happy for her.:)

And as far as "fair" when you are looking at admitting kids to college, that really is dependent on the program that the student is applying for.

If you have a national champion debater and a spot on the debate team, you might find that is your "in".

There are so many "ins" if you want to argue that concept. Demographics are not the only points they will choose a student.

But filling out the debate team is part of their demographics that they are trying to fill out-just like filling out their football team, number of female students, number of kids from more than 1000 miles away, number of kids who will be the first college students in the family, etc. There are a bunch of things that colleges look at --not all of them look at the same things though.

I am not splitting hairs and I agree there are many more things of admission. I was just making a point that there is more to it than sports.
That is all.

The college my dd is going to is rolling admissions. It is a big public university. It is first come, first serve more or less to kids who meet the requirements.
