Achilles tendonitis?

I went back to the gym last week (riding the exercise bike for an hour) and have developed achilles tendonitis. I have an appointment with the doc but it's not until the end of next week. I have been taking ibuprofen and tylenol as recommended but am having little relief. Last night the pain kept waking me up, and it's painful to the touch. Anyone else go through this and have any suggestions to help me get through the next 8 days?

By any chance have you recently started taking statin drugs? They do a number on the Achilles. It’s a bizarre but well known side effect. For me nothing but stopping the drug fixed it and it took a couple of months before I could walk again without a limp. I hope yours resolves faster.

Thanks, but no new drugs. Just got up one morning and MAN does my achilles hurt! The only thing I'm doing differently is riding the exercise bike; started with 3 days last week, Monday this week, and Tuesday morning was BAD. It was a little better yesterday but much worse today.

I can't see going 8 days of sleepless nights, is urgent care an option until you can get in to see your actual doc?

A couple of OTC thoughts--Naproxen (aka Aleve) is a good anti-inflammatory. It is an NSAID, so you don't want to take it along with other NSAID meds (you could ask a pharmacist about interactions.)

I've had some good results with lidocaine patches, maybe that could help?

I would question whether you should be on the bike at the gym until you get this under control. My hunch is that you should probably stay off of it as much as possible.

Good luck with everything, I hope you can get some relief ASAP.

Off brand lidocane creme, rubbed directly on the bottom of your foot may help. I would do it several times a day, especially before bed. There is no quick fix for it and I hope you get some relief. I second the thought to go to a quick care clinic. Sometimes an injection will help. Good luck!

OK, I'm probably an extreme case, but I recommend getting it confirmed by a qualified doc that it's tendonitis and not something more serious.

DW and I were walking the Camino Frances last fall and I developed what I thought was Achilles tendonitis. I saw a physio along the way and did stretching exercises before and after walking, but the pain continued.

About 3 months after we finished our Camino, the pain was still there so I scheduled an appointment with my doc, who thought I'd ruptured my Achilles and referred me for an MRI. Turned out I'd ruptured it 70%.

They put me in a boot to let it continue healing on its own, but if I'd seen a doc when the injury happened they might have been able to repair it surgically with a better result, or at least keep me from continuing to walk 10-15 miles/day on it.
