think of getting one for my kids this summer. I'm looking for honest opinions on if these are good for backyard fun, or more trouble than their worth. It seems the reviews are extreme..love it or hate it. Any advice pro/con. Thanks.

I'm refering to the ones with the inflatable collar and the mini filter.

I'm no help at all - I've known two families that got them. One enjoyed theirs a lot, and the other battled green water all year.

I got my first above ground pool last year. I told myself I was getting it for the grandkids but I love it! I bought an Intex that was on sale at K-Mart. I only ended up paying $139.00 for it. It isn't that big (12' x 30") but, since my grandkids are young and I'm just learning how to care for it, it's just right for now. I got the one with the metal bar all around, nothing inflatable.

I did buy a bigger filter pump for it, as I didn't think the one that came with it was doing a good enough job circulating the water.

I would get a pool membership before I bought an above ground pool. Our current community does not allow them, but I just don't like "climbing in" to go swimming.

My kids probably would not care as they are just fine with splashing in puddles. But they do like to "swim" and the logistics of an above ground pool don't mesh well with that.

As a kid, it was better than nothing--but I always preferred an inground pool even if we could not get one ourselves.

One step ahead and maybe even Toys R Us, sometimes sell inflatable water play areas. That may be an option for you! Bring it out maybe once a week and let them play and then put it away. They are like those inflatable slide/jumpy things--but you attach a hose and it is a water slide. So they get the water fun, but you can take it right down.

We had those now we have the one with the white poles. We also added a larger pump; a real pump that you can attach a real pool vacuum to. Not had any problems with it since using a larger pump.

We had one when the kids were little and had a blast with it. I'd just throw a half-cup of Clorox in it every so often and never had a problem with algae.

My sons would sit on the sides of the inflatable ones & let the water out - several other people complain about their kids doing the same thing

The metal pole ones I liked alot better - main problem I had was the expensive of the filters but what helped there is a spa fitler cleaner (lemon scent) - I put several in a big paint bucket (Sherwin-Williams sales them about $5) add that cleaner then let sit overnight - pull the filters out & rinsed with garden hose (reused several times)

We kepted one until oldest son got seizures so I don't trust him to be in one without someone with him

we have had an 18ft round Intex for about 5 summers...........we did replace it once because hubby stored it in a different shed one winter and a mouse nested in it and chewed it.
but other than that no problems whatsoever.........we love it, came with a ladder, and filter
we use the floating chlorine tabs.

we are actually probably graduating to a "real" pool this summer..........but no complaints with the temp one.
