? About Waitlisting While Renting

Turns out if we want to go to HHI this summer, we'll have to rent some points. This is where my unfortunate use year (August) is interfering. If I had an earlier use year, I'd be able to borrow 2005 points for this summer. Too bad for me.

Here's my question: How does it usually work when you have to waitlist on rented points? What if the waitlist never comes through? I really want to do this, but I don't want to get shafted here... Anyone been in this situation?

I'm not sure I understand all of your questions.

First part.

You have an August Use Year. You have points good from August 1, 2003-July 31, 2004. If you haven't already used these, they can be used for a HHI trip this summer. You could also borrow points from your August 1, 2004-July 31, 2005 to use. If you had to make a last minute cancellation, there might be some issues with how to use the points prior to July 31, 2004.

I don't understand what you mean by "waitlist on rented points". Only a member can be on a waitlist for points. Once a member has a reservation made, they could rent it to you for cash.

The other option would be to book directly through Disney (DVC or CRO) on cash (maybe getting the Member Discount). I don't think there's a waitlist for this. (You could ask.) I think that's just on a "as available" basis like a regular CRO reservation.

well this may sound crazy, but this is what happen to me,
my use year sept. i used my 2003 banked points, used my 2004current points, and borrowed my 2005 points to make ressies for a magical gatherings for christmas for my whole family.
i told my family they have to be positive that they will stay and not cancel out any days or i will get mess up with my points.
well after evrything is booked db says i will be leaving a day earlier because db lives in las vegas and he has to fly red eyes in and vvery late flights home and the kids wont be able to get up and go to school the next day, anyways, i kinda actually worked out because we have to stay an extra day to fly for $150 round trip, anyways, i cancel db last night in the studio and ms says, those 2005 points will have to go back in the 2004 use year, ok i dont mind because im using those for our extra night, well here is the info your waiting for, i had just a few 2003 points left but not enough to make a one night stay, so, another dvc member wanted to trade points(because they couldnt use there points until july 5 and i need to use up the 2003 points and i decide this would work out) well when i called for that one night i was short a few points to add to the 2003 and ms borrowed the original 2005 now 2004 points to make the ressies. and so far everything has worked out. i pm you:sunny:

My August 2003 points are long gone. The August 2004 points are gone too for reservations this summer and for Christmas. Since I do most of my traveling over the summer, I live in constant borrowed mode (again, because of the use year I have).

I guess my question about waitlisting is that I wouldn't want to have to pay up front (even partially) for a reservation I may not get. I guess its no big deal, though. The points would just go back to their owner and no money would change hands, right?

I would try to buy an existing reservation. I certainly wouldn't give anyone more than a minimal deposit if they are only promising to put their name on the waitlist for a reservation.

I checked cash availability for my nights and they do have studios available... at $275 a night! I could get one night at the member discount for $206. That's WAY too much for us. I would love to be able to rent someone's existing reservations, but that sounds like a long-shot to me...

FWIW, I think you will have a very hard time finding an owner willing to tie up their points hoping a waitlist will come through. There are too many better opportunities (for the owner to rent right now) to make "contingency renting" an attractive option.

How badly do you want to go? Are you willing to take some risk? If so, my advice is to rent some points and have them transferred into your account. The transferred points should retain their original use year and home resort. If the waitlist doesn't come through, you can still use the points some other time or someplace else - or even rent them out yourself and get your $$ back. Just make sure the points you rent don't expire for awhile.

Best wishes -

You know, Carol, that sounds like the best idea yet. That way, if worse comes to worst, I just end up with 66 more points to play with later... Thanks.

Question, though: If I'm having them transferred into my account, would I have to rent points specific to a place I already own? In other words, I own at BWV and BCV. Must the points I rent be at one of those two resorts?

No. You should be able to rent points from any resort.

As already noted, the transferred points should retain their orignal home resort. However, IIRC, (and I may not), there is some type of computer glitch that makes it difficult for MS to track that. So if it is important to you to get points from a specific resort, you'll need to keep track (keep note of the transaction confirmation number) and be firm with MS about the resort (politely so, of course, LOL) if a CM tries to tell you differently.

Now that I think more about it, you might have to tell MS what use year (of yours) you want the points transferred into. I seem to recall that MS does not have a way to keep track of the original use year. If so, that could make your plan a little dicey - if the waitlist doesn't come through, the points might expire before you could use them. That's the August use year getting in your way, again, darn it! (Because your desired vacation is in the 2003 use year and your 25% banking window is May 31. Not even sure if you can bank transferred points).

Anyway, perhaps you can post a specific question about this whole topic and get one of the members with "point transfer experience" to tell you the specifics.

This area seems to be full of rules that change and I haven't been able to keep on top of it!

Good luck !
