About to buy into DVC

Our first points were $50 a point. Our last points were about $72 per point direct from Disney. I'd never pay over $99 a point. Even that is too high.
You should look at the purchasing power of the price you paid in today’s dollar. I’m not sure the year you bought. Purchasing power is different than inflation and in this case more appropriate.

However, less definitive since (unlike CPI) purchasing power estimates don't come from official sources and therefore more readily criticized as subjective.

I’m less likely to justify with “purchasing power” when I can see with my own two eyes what I’m purchasing is not as great as it was twenty years ago.

They are all quite subjective. However CPI is based on a basket of basic needs commodity. The purchasing power methods are similar but don’t use only basic need commodities. As this isn’t a basic need CPI isn’t justified in this case. Different needs inflate at different costs. It should be is DVC increasing at rates greater than comparable goods and services. By comparable I mean luxury goods not food, gas, etc used in CPI. Another way is also to base it off of wage adjustments by looking at average wage growth as reported by Social Security. That wouldn’t be subjective anymore. You could look at DVCs cost as a percentage of average wage at the time. That might even be more appropriate measure in cost changes.

Also even our own Central Bank (and their mandate involves controlling inflation) takes CPI with a grain of salt, just as an aside. It has frequently criticized CPI in recent times with regard to the composition of the basket not being in ratio to what the basic consumer purchases. Also saying CPI was under predicting actual inflation because of this issue.

Even with CPI $50 20 years ago is roughly $100 today. Based on the $72 in the quote purchased I wondered where that would land.

I agree - that would be a better way of analyzing the difference. Wage growth is an objective measure and inflation-adjusted wage growth accounts for any incremental amount of inflation of luxury services associated with wage growth beyond the broader rate of inflation.

Sorry to hijack the conversation. But my husband and I 99.9% have decided to purchase 100 points direct from Disney. $167/point and we get 100 from 2018, 100 from 2019 at closing and then 100 in 2020. Use year has to be before June.

The guide intrigued us with the last minute vacations you can get at 45 days out that don’t require points but just $295. Has anyone done one of these?

We visit Disney every year sometimes twice. We do a couples only trip most of the time but our children and grandchildren came in is in December. We rented points the. For a 2br and studio. We have rented many times in the past.

We will try to find a resale purchase In the same resort and use year of at least 150 points so that we can still vacation the same. But that will probably be next year since
We feel that cash is the way to go and we don’t want to get into our savings more than 10%. We normally only budget 5% for vacations per year if it is just us going then less - last year with 13 people it was closer to 7%.

Anyway, more questions ... how can we add our four children to the contract? The guide said they will fed ex the papers since we are back home. We are not interested in exchanging points for cruises since I have read that is a poor use of the contract. We are already annual passholders and we have the tables in wonderland. I told the guide that we only wanted a small contract to be one of the “cool kids” and we would most likely buy more via the resale market. Because he said that we needed x points when we took the family. I plan on booking AP discounted room for DH and I and using points for bigger trips or vice versa after I run the numbers for each trip. I can vacation anytime but for grandchildren then they have to be on a break from school.

Thanks for your help ;)

Those are probably RCI Last Call and you won't get anything probably even worth the $295. If you can get anything that fits where you want to go and when you want to go. https://www.rci.com/pre-rci-en_US/help/vacation-options/what-is-a-last-call-vacation.page

What resort are you looking at purchasing? I haven't kept up with the Direct price per point since it hit $100 a point which I thought was outrageous. You can add adult children to the contract, but there is a fee for doing that (do a search and you'll find the details). But if you add them, the DVC points can become part of a settlement if they have financial problems. You'll need to title your contracts exactly the same to keep the same master contract number for all of them.

Are you sure about the Poly for a family of 5. They have the most restrictive room choices of all DVC with only studios. Studios are far too small for 5 once they get any age. Works great when they are toddlers but you will still be owners when they are teens.

DVC doesn't work when relying on the 7 month window. you cn often find something but it is difficult to rely on swapping out at 7 months.

I agree they were probably referencing RCI last call. Limited availability and limited location and resort choices. Something to peruse and see if there's anything of interest but it's difficult to say that something so sporadic and uncertain is a big benefit. ;)

I'm assuming you mean that the UY must be June or later to get 2018 points. When you purchase direct you get current UY points and at this time Feb, Mar and April have all started their 2019 UY. June, Aug, Sept Oct and Dec are still in their 2018 UY but for June you'd need to purchase prior to June 1st to get the 2018 points. August UY would require a purchase prior to August 1 to get 2018 points and so on. Have you read this thread on Understanding UY to determine what might be the best UY for you? https://www.disboards.com/threads/understanding-use-year-updated-march-10-2019.1942668/

I'm also curious what resort you are purchasing at? Is it where you want to own and are happy staying or want to stay most of the time? And are you aware that if you purchased resale first you'd be able to purchase the 75 points required as a minimum to have a qualified membership? It doesn't sound like you need the benefits right away so might be something to consider.

If all your children are 18 or older you would just have them included on the contracts when you purchase. As outlined they then have ownership benefits and also ownership liabilities and it will be an asset for all of them.

I don't think I would be too happy with five in a studio. It can be done and is legal, but it sure makes a tight living space. The Polynesian studio has one queen bed, one queen sleeper and one bunk sized murphy bed (so narrower and shorter than a twin). We only have three in our family and now with our son out on his own, it's usually only the two of us. But we still get a one bedroom when we book except for OKW studios because we can each get our own bed and neither of us have to sleep on a sleeper sofa.

Agree about booking at seven months. Sometimes of the year, it's not too difficult, especially if you are booking a one bedroom instead of a studio (early May comes to mind). But Fall Frenzy it can be tough.

You may want to post a new thread. Many people will only read the OP and answer that question. Not seeing your question or realizing the OP has already made a decision.

i will do that....BECAUSE WE DID IT ! We bought the AKL points - so excited. after years of stalking these boards, missing out on the resale prices/perks before they changed it, and wondering how i was going to convince the hubs. We did it ! I didn't even have to convince him. It was "his idea" - or at least he thought so...lol

Seriously over the moon !

We have two daughters - we bought DVC when they were 6 and 8. A studio worked fine - as they got bigger and brought friends, we had to get 2 BR's. One of our last DVC trips was to Aulani and we had a studio with our now 20+ year old daughters. My oldest slept in the bathtub or balcony to get away from my snoring. There were not enough plugs for all of their gear. Bathroom time was tough - I wound up using the resort bathrooms to shower and shave.

As far as perks, DVC has placed new limits on resale purchases - review them on this board carefully. They are also subject to change/be discontinued at any time. You buy at one home resort which enables you to book at 11 months. At 7 months, you can book at any DVC resort if available (direct - all, resale - the original 14)
