? about teacher's comment to dd???

For once in a "lifetime" possibilities - I probably would have done the same...In hs, I was allowed to attend the Regan/Bush political rally during school hours...My mom pushed for that one - my dad threw a fit about playing hooky...

Of course, this is the teacher's business! He's a representative of the school and it's certainly the school's business. In our area, teachers take attendance so a student not being there is suddenly not their business? His delivery could have been better but that is making a mountain out of a molehill IMO.

Possibly, but then I wouldn't have been interviewed for the paper when my child is supposed to be home sick. I think the OP goofed and is ticked that she got called on it.

OP lies to the school, teaches her daughter it's ok to lie when it helps you do something fun, it's ok to lie to your teacher, and her big concern is a comment a teacher made???

For real.

Did your parents tell the school you were sick to take you out of school though? That is the real issue here. I am not saying the OP's child wasn't sick but to take her out of school because she was sick and the end up all over the paper when she was home sick doesn't look good to the school.

Our ds missed 3 days of school last December to fly out to Portland to watch our high school boys run at a national Cross Country meet. That was a once in a lifetime opportunity for him, but we told the school why he was going, the truth. That is the difference here.

You send your children to a school that does this?????

I still think it's none of the teacher's/school's business unless it's a habit with that particular student.

I don't know about the rest of you, but there have been plenty of times when I've felt too sick to work, but once I got home and took some meds and rested a while, I get my second wind. What should I do? Lie in bed just because I left work? That's just silly. I don't expect that from my kids either. If they come home from school for being sick, they'll take something for it (which they can't take at school without a doctor's note, I might add), and they'll rest. If they feel better later, I won't let them go outside with friends or anything, but they can get up and do whatever -- go to the store with me, wait in line to see a celebrity, or anything like that.

Sorry, but I'm the parent, not the school. I know my child's needs much better than they do.

I am sorry but in my book the the school and the teacher are playing a major role in my Child's life. And as the parent it is my job to form a bond with the school and the teachers to make the best of my Child's learning experience.
The go hand and hand.

If one fails the other fails.

Goodness and we wonder why we have a shortage of Teachers. The poor things can do anything right by your Children.

no, my mom just made the call saying I wouldn't be in school not to say I'm sick (I attended the same school in which my father taught)- but, to my teacher-dad, it was one in the same...if I'm not sick - I should be in school...It wouldn't look good to have a teacher's daughter who should be in school in national tv attending a political rally...geez, to this day - I still remember the details of the argument... She took me - my dad went to work...

I have my father's mentality with my kids - he "brainwashed" me well- If they're not in school, it's because they are sick...if they're sick, they don't attend activities...yes, they may have to run to the store with me - but, there's no other options...Don't make dr's appointments during school hours unless it's an emergency...Don't pull them out for vacations either...oops, no flames, I didn't mean to open that can of worms...

Marseeya, glad you brought that up!

My son has frequently come home after school very sick... He throws up, and rest awhile, and having got whatever it is out of his system, he is perfectly FINE!!! ( I have thought it might be something he is eating at school, but have never been able to identify what it might be????)

Anyhow,
He is MY child.
Any teacher who thinks that they have the right or obligation to control a childs life with their parents, outside of school, has a serious God-complex.

I don't dispute any of that. But I look at it this way. I won't tell the teacher how to do HER job and I don't want her telling me how to do mine.

I'm a former teacher and the mother of an 11 year old skater. NO WAY does she leave school sick and then get to go to a "once in a lifetime" thing to get an autograph! To go to Olympic trials, maybe. An autograph? No way.
I also agree with MosMom. If Oksana has to pull out of Ice Wars because of a virus, we'll know why.

The teacher wasn't out of line. I mean, she did leave school early and was in the newspaper at the signing. It must have crossed your mind when they were interviewing her that it might create an uncomfortable situation for her at school.

Also, I think it is important to note here.

Are we discussing whether the OP should have done what she did, or whether the teachers public comments were appropriate?

TWO separate issues here.

nobody said they had the right to control your child.
But they do have the right to honesty. If it is a Private Christian School, as a general rule they very much view the school/home environment as integrated. What is the point of Teaching the 10 Commandments at school, if the household doesn't also value those standards? You can't teach Children, we follow the Laws of God Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 3:00pm, but gosh your life just isn't my business once that clock hits 3:01pm.

Our Private School allows children to be absent for Once in a Lifetime Events. But the homework policies are different. The teacher needs to be notified in advance, and homework is due on the same day that everybody else's homework is due -- ie when you come back to school the next day, your Math assignment needs to be completed.

I don't blame the teacher.

Yes, but you've somehow turned a couple comments by this teacher into some sort of dictator-like control over all his students. He saw an article talking about one of his students who left early the day before supposedly sick and he commented about it. It's not like he hunted her down at the rink and dragged her back to school.

I totally agree.
I don't think they are trying to control your child or your parenting.
