We are going to WDW in May 2013. We live in NY and we drove last time we went in 2010. It was a horrible drive and I really don't want to do it again but plane tickets are just so much and there are 7 of us that need tickets. I'm on Southwest email list. We went in 2006 and flew thru Southwest with a special $69 per ticket. I've seen them run that special a few times. Does anyone know if they do this yearly? Or how often? I'm just hoping they have a great deal before we leave, b/c I really don't want to drive but we can't pay the prices that are out right now....

Don't count on it. The price of operating the plane has skyrocketed since 2006

Considering the fact that gas prices have nearly tripled since then, it will be impossible to see prices like that again. The airlines and most hotels and resorts slashed prices at that time and offered deals at a cost to them to keep people traveling. Think about the old 4 and three deal offered several years ago.

I live in DE and feel quite frankly the cost of flights these days are reasonable.

Before you make the decision to drive, really take a look at what it will cost. Since you have 7 people and luggage you'll likely need two vehicles.

Mileage from Smithtown, NY to WDW is 1,130 each way. Round trip that's 4520 miles. If you have a cat that gets 23 mpg that'll mean it'll require almost 200 gallons of gas for the complete trip. At 3.59 a gallon, that's $705. Then you'll likely need 2 hotel rooms for one night each for each direction. Assuming $100 per room per night, that's another $400. Add another $200 for food for 7 people for the 4 days of driving. Then add another $100 for tolls and you are up to $1400 to drive.

I found direct flights from JFK to MCO for $261 round trip. That would be $1827 total or about $400 more than driving. For some, that extra cost would be worth not driving for the better part of two days.

How many times are you going? Your mileage indicates two round trips.

Back in 2006, I could frequently get $49 each way fares from Albany, NY to Orlando. Those same tickets today are rarely lower than $150-175 each way, and often $200-225. I wouldn't expect to ever see $69 again for NY->MCO, but you could get a pretty decent sale if you time it right.

Also...I'm flying out of LaGuardia for my August trip. I'm going down on Jetblue for $128 total and coming back on Delta for $180. Not the cheapest, but it lets me leave on a nonstop flight in the morning to start the trip and come home on a nonstop flight in the late afternoon to end the trip. Same carrier round-trip fares were more expensive for these times. (I live part-time with my significant other in NYC...otherwise I'd fly out of Albany, but those flights have been $223 each way for good times.)

Checked Southwest this a.m. They are having a $69 special. I'm not sure if where you are flying from is on sale but its worth checking. Have to book by July 20 and Sundays are not included.
