We just called Canon b/c I read on these boards that our powershot A70 had a recall. They said they would fix it or send us an A510 for $100. What would you do????

what recall? at $100, quite honestly it's a ripoff because the street price according to the Nextag is around $150 anyway. Might as well just fix it. Use the $100 towards a better camera.

Recall - I searched this thread and found a link to the recall info on the A70:

Canon A70 recall

So far (knock on wood!), my camera isn't having any problems.

ahhhh... the Sony recall (the CCD was manufactured by Sony).

Still my suggestion is to fix it, or you may try a step further and talk to the service manager about the "upgrade" you're being given. The $100 price for the so-called upgrade is ridiculous, at that price, Canon is actually making money off you. To me, that's bad customer service.

A510 (brand new in box, with full warranty AND Optex camera case) is running for $120. So minus the camera case, I'd say about $110. If they offer you the A510 for $50, then take it... MAKE SURE you'll get 1 year warranty IN WRITING if you take the offer.

I guess its not a recall, I don't know what they call it, but a lot of these cameras have a problem with the screen having a distorted image. Here is the link--

Thanks for the quick responses!!! I'm going to get it fixed instead of getting a new camera. I can't believe that the new one is only $120 that is crazy!

Anyone want to bet that the A510 they are offering is a refurb?

I won't bet on that. In Canada, at least, when Canon offers something like that (but usually the price is really low) it's brand new in a sealed box with one full year warranty.

You might try asking to have your issue escalated to a supervisor (or the next level, whatever Canon calls that) and negotiate with him/her for a *better* upgrade, to a better model, like the A610, A620, or A700. Otherwise, just go for the repair, if fully covered under warranty.

Just a thought...

unless there is some new law in the states i'm betting on the refurb

my experience with canon csr almost kept me from buying the rebel ( took over 2 yrs of fighting with them to replace my brand new $500( at the time) multipass printer that didn't work right from the time i took it out of the box...and replaced it with a refurb that did the exact same thing...namely didn't work, messed up the phone sytem, nightmare for sure :badpc: :badpc: :badpc: :badpc: :rolleyes1 :rolleyes1 :rolleyes1

so don't even bother with the lowly csr, go straight to as high up as you can get..i finally had to write a letter to some canon exec. to get them to do anything ( except try to charge me $40 per call since they messed around till the warrenty was over :furious: :furious: :furious: )

i just hope i never have a problem with my camera

Canon replaced my first 10D with a refurb, and since the 510 is no longer being made... but I may be wrong(it has happened).

OIC, one can still find the 510 in abundance in Canada, especially at Costco and at Wally's (Wal-Mart). Heck, even Henry's Canada still have them in stock.

Also, at $100, the better not give anybody a refurb unit when a brand new one including a case only cost $120.

I had also had a problem with my Canon A75. After being without it for over two months, I did some looking and found out about the problem with it. The store didn't know anything about the problem, or so they told me. I was offered a 510, or a Panasonic, which I didn't want either. I wanted to pay the difference and get the A620. After a lot of back and forth with them, (the sales person I had been talking with had left the company), I had to contact head office, but eventually I got it for the price that I was given. Funny these dealers sell a product, but don't seem to know when there has been a recall on them.

I speak from personal experience on this exact issue. My A70 was affected by this recall. The screen was becoming almost completely unusable with flickering and discoloration. It normally still took decent pictures, but sometimes the problem showed up there also.

When I called, I described the problem and they checked my serial number against their list of bad sensor ranges and it qualified. They sent me a prepaid shipping label. I sent it off and received a brand new factory sealed A520 in about three weeks. They even threw in a 128MB SD card for my touble (which was nice considering all my existing cards were CF). I did not even ask to get a replacement camera.

Keep in mind that mine was visually being affected by the problem. It is more common for this problem to surface if you live in a humid environment. It aparently is a bigger issue in the Central America markets. Well, I live in SW Florida... Humidity is a way of life here.

It is possible that they are offering you something different because you are not saying that yours is showing signs of the problem or possibly yours is not in the range of serial numbers where the problem is expected.

If you can confirm that yours is in the affected range, I say send it in to be fixed. You will likely be getting a new camera. Think of this from their business perspective. The cost of a repair person opening and fixing your camera is likely more than just sending a new one. I heard that Sony was picking up part if not all of the cost because it was their component that failed.

As for the A520 vs. A70. I now have one more MP and the camera is a little smaller, but it is essentially the same thing. I still prefer to use my S1 IS and let mt DDs or DW use the A520.

Good luck!
