*Caution!!* Possible spoilers for those who haven't seen the movie yet -- unless we were the last 4! ; )

We just returned from seeing the movie and the whole family really enjoyed it! DH and I were talking afterwards about a few things we got confused on. I'm hoping some of you here may be able to help!

Was Jack always a skeleton? Was he just never in the moonlight until he was stabbed and that's why we didn't notice? He seemed surprised himself.

And, why did Jack cut his hand at the end? I'm assuming that maybe he and Will are related (father/son or brothers) and that I missed this reference soemwhere along the way...?

Anyway, any help that can be given would be appreciated!

I think Jack became a skeleton after he secretly picked up a cursed coin from the chest while they were in the cave.

I don't know why he cut his hand though. Hopefully someone else will have the answer.

About cutting his hand...since Jack now stole a gold coin, none of the sceletons could return to normal, until he also shed his blood.

I saw it twice, so I understand it pretty good.
After becoming cursed by taking a cursed coin out of the chest before the final fight, in order to end the curse he had to return the coin to the chest with his blood. Each stolen coin had to be returned with the blood of the taker on it. The moment the last coin had been returned the curse was removed and all those cursed became mortal.

We just saw it last night for the first time, also... I thought we were the last ones! :)

But we had the exact same discussion on the way home!

Thanks for asking the question - and thanks for all the answers!

I have a different question...when they drowned Bootstrap (Will's father) did he die then or was he just under the sea for 10 years and died when all the skeletons became mortal?

That is one of the "unanswered questions."

He could have

1. Sunk to a depth so deep that the pressure crushed his skeleton and he died a long time ago. (This is what Barbossa said they were trying to accomplish.)

2. He was sunk, but not crushed so that when the curse was lifted, he drowned.

3. Sometime during the 10 years he was sunk, he was able to free himself, make it to shore somewhere, and probably got himself arrested by some French/English/Spanish soldiers so that in the sequel Will can stumble upon him in some foreign prison. He'll hang out with the gang for awhile but will beg Jack not to tell Will he is his father because he doesn't want to ruin his son's happy life, and at a critical scene Will finds out and has go and rescue his father who was attempting to make some kind of "noble sacrifice" and then they live happily ever after.

I like #3.
If his skeleton was compressed, it would have made it that much more easier for him to escape his fate, and then Will didn't technically kill his own father by making him mortal. And since Bootstrap was so much a (missing) part of the movie, it would make a lot of sense to bring the character back.

Who will play Bootstrap in the next movie? I vote for harrison ford.

Not unless he plans to do better than he did in his last couple of movies.

I've never believed that Bootstrap was immortal at the time they threw him overboard -- so he drowned.

After seeing the movie 4 times and listening carefully to everything that's said (especially by Barbossa) it would seem that they didn't become "immortal" until ALL the treasure had been scattered (which took some time to do).... by the time they realized the full extent of the curse, it was too late (and so the task of recovering all the coins began, etc.).

JMHO ---- of course, this means NOTHING if the writers decide that Bootstrap needs to be in the sequel ;) !

The monkey scene at the very end (after the credits) showed that taking a single coin curses the one who takes it immediately.
Other points to consider...
There were an awful lot of coins to get rid of, then recover (and then know who's blood to return it with)...although they could seemingly 'sense' the missing coins.
It would be an awful stupid curse, though, to allow a pirate(s) to steal all but one coin (leaving it in the chest) and remain uncursed (if one knew better) and rich.
It would then also follow that if all coins had to be removed...that the last coin 'triggered' the curse, then one might assume that just returning just 1 could 'untrigger' the curse (although it doesn't necessarily follow)
Jack became immediately cursed by just taking one of many...not the last one.
One might wonder how the pirates might be so stupid to not realized they were cursed, but considering that they had to be wounded or killed or outside in the moonlight to absolutely realize it, they could easily go a month before they fully realized the extent of the curse. The fact that they had hunger, thirst and lust that could not be quenched was the only real 'regular' clue they had, but I imagine that they could have attributed that to the flu.
...
Furthermore, if Bootstrap was dead if/when the curse became 'active' (and had already sent it to his son Will who wore it around his neck), why would the curse care about that coin (since the thief was dead), or be smart enough not to affect Will instead?
Then there is also the possibility that Bootstrap realized the curse and realized that because of his alliance with Jack that the crew would do him in and purposely sent his coin to Will (hopefully realizing that Will would not be affected) to (hopefully) forever curse the crew.

Sounds good but what about the timeline of the final monkey scene?

When we last saw Elizabeth and Will kissing on the wall, it was daytime.

It was night when the monkey was knocked out by Elizabeth so he must have swam around a long time before making it back to the cave.

Was the monkey bathed in moonlight during the last scene?

If Bootstarp sent the coin to Will before they all realized they were cursed, Bootstrap would have been cursed as well. If that's the case, he couldn't be killed but would have died if still strapped to the canon when the curse was lifted.

"It would be an awful stupid curse, though"

I think it was kind of stupid for the Aztec gods to put a curse on it so that whoever stole their treasure would become invincible, too.

If I was going to curse something, I think it would be instant death, not invincibility. Although, not being able to enjoy life's pleasures would suck.

I don't think it's stupid at all. They can't drink; they can't eat; They can't have intimate relations; they probably can't excrete either. If I couldn't do that, I'd want to die pretty badly...but they can't die either. Their lives are quite literaly not worth living, yet they cannot die and end their suffering.

It's a pretty horrible curse, if you ask me.

Although the curse (especially the 'invincibility') allowed them to have anything and all they wanted (rape and pillage), they could enjoy nothing. Although they 'thirsted' for everything, nothing could quench the thirst, which in itself made the 'thirst' even more intense. The 'invinciblity' is what made the curse an endless torture. But a smart bunch could steal everything they could, capture a few wenches, before ending the curse.

The curse could also be taken advantage of, especially now that they all know how it works...
They could carry the chest with them, take some coins out, then rob, pillage and kidnap as they please then return the coins to enjoy their spoils.

Furthermore, since the curse doesn't affect those who possess the coins, only the one(s) who took them from the chest, then they could dupe someone into taking out all the coins from the chest and 'give' them all to the pirates, then they could tie him up lock him in the chest, take his share as well and dump the chest overboard for the dupe to 'live' a horrible eternal live locked in a chest at the bottom of the ocean.
let only one pirate take the coins out (only he would be affected then)...

Okay you guys.....

Stop blowing holes in my ship!! (sorry, I mean story line..... come on now, if we rationalize about this TOO much, it's going to take away some of the "magic" surrounding the curse ;) ).....

Can't wait to see the sequel!!! :)

Sorry, April, don't read this.

Punkin...
Yes, the curse would be a bad thing in the long term, but it wouldn't do a lot to help the aztecs out in their struggles with the conquistadors - instand death would have been a better curse for an aztec god to put on aztec treasure that was about to be stolen by the Europeans, if you asked me. I mean, that would have been a better deal for the Aztecs. Or, if I could make people invincible, I'd make my own Aztec people invincible and we could squash those Europeans with their steel swords, gun powder, and horses. I'm not saying that the curse was a good thing, it would suck, but if you are Aztecs being invaded by the Spanish, why would you want to make them invincible? Even if the long term outcome is bad for them, the short-term is pretty bad for your own people.
