I think this is the proper forum for this.

My question is this- if you check in and give your credit card so that you can charge to your room card... do they charge the card or can you tell them not to really charge it and pay for it at the end of your trip without charging it to your credit card?

And if so, do you have to pay CASH when you pay it- or can you pay with a check?

Just curious... I'd prefer not to really charge it to the credit card and pay for it at the end of our stay- but I'd also rather not bother with cash and/or traveller's checks and just pay with a personal acct. check at the end of our stay.

Anyone know definitively on this or do I need to call Disney to ask? Thanks!

(ps. is there a maximum they'll let you charge before cutting you off on charging to your room key or an amount per day? Seems like last time we had it on a credit card so we could charge -and we ended up one day the card wouldn't let us charge towards the end of the day and we hadn't even spent that much! I can't remember the specifics of it but I think we just met a threshold over several days accumulation- and had to go pay for it in cash and/or approve them to charge the credit card before we could continue to charge on the room key/card. ??? am I remembering that correctly? And if so- what is the amount?)

If you don't want the charges to go on your credit card just make sure you go down to the desk the night before checkout and pay it with your check. If you find during your stay you are getting close to your allotted limit they held for you when you checked in, also just go to the service desk and pay off some of the charges. Not sure why you had problems with not being able to use the charging privledges one time, we never had that problem.

You can put down the cash for your room charges instead of your credit card if you want. I'm not sure about the check thing I thought they had a limit on personnal checks? Maybe someone out there can help us w/ that one. AS for a charging limit yes there is put when you get to it you can just pay it off and start over. And as for the problem w/ charging don't worry. We always have them. I charge everything (no there is not a daily limit just an over all limit). I am usually told a couple of times during the trip that it won't go through. So I go to the desk and they check it and always tell me there's no problem it just didn't scan right. If this happens just ask them to run it again. Hope this helps.

I believe at the value resorts it's a $500 limit before they ask for reauthorization. Make sure you go to the front desk the night before checkout to pay with the check, the charge is processed overnight before you checkout.

Each category of hotel has it's own charge limit. I think it's $500 for value, $1000 for moderate, and $1500 for deluxe. I'm pretty sure you can give them a check at the beginning of your stay to cover potential room charges. We had a glitch at check-in last year and they said we could write them a check (we had paid extra money prior to the trip just for room charges, and it wasn't showing up in the system).
If you don't go over your limit and choose express check-out, they will charge your card when you check-out. As other posters have stated, if you don't want it on your card, go to the front desk prior to check-out and settle the bill.

why not get a debit card prior to your trip - all the convenience of a credit card, none of the hassles of a check, but still a direct debit to your checking account.

I don't know about the OP's bank, but my bank won't allow more than 400 dollars to be debited in a 24 hour period. Could be a problem if you put EVERYTHING on it. I would definately check before you leave for your banks limit.

I have a debit card- several actually. LOL I just don't want to take my debit card and use it. Just for safety reasons... a debit card that works as a credit card in many cases is just as bad as walking around with cash nowadays. Most places I am not asked for ID when I use my debit card as a credit card- yanno?

The reason I asked about paying for it with a check though- is because I could use a credit card check with zero interest for 12mo. :rotfl: I laugh because I know darn well I'll pay it off the first month because I'm anal that way... but you know.. just in case. LOL :teeth: And one credit card check is safer than taking my debit card with me. If it gets stolen.. I have some footing to fight against it/dispute it/report as stolen, where as a debit card.. I don't know about your bank but mine you can't even dispute charges on it. So I never use it as a "credit card" where I might not get the items or be overcharged/etc. (such as on vacations, online transactions with web-merchants, etc.)

It's ONE check though- so that's why I didn't want to pay on it daily. But I don't intend on spending more than $500 on souvenirs and such (everything is paid for including dining already) -so with that $500 limit... and paying it off with the check before the credit card is charged, is cool with me.

Thanks for answering my questions! :)

I do have one more question though:
I'm pretty sure you can give them a check at the beginning of your stay to cover potential room charges.

Do you just give them a blank check and fill it out/sign it when you see how much your charges are? Or how does that work? What if you write the check (at the beginning of your stay to cover potential room charges) for MORE than you ended up spending on room card charges???

I would probably call the front desk of the hotel I was staying at and ask them how the check would work. I would give a check in the approximate amount of what I think I would be spending. If your checked cleared while you were there and you didn't spend all of it, I think they would give you cash back (or send you a check in the mail).

I don't want to burst bubbles on the safety issues of debit/credit cards but we've had both our debit card and credit card NUMBERS stolen last year. The cards were always in our possession. We received calls from the Fraud Division of the cards (two different times last year) asking about charges made in Indiana (we live in NH) and a county in Asia. Because the debit card had a VISA logo on it, we were reimbursed (as well as the credit card), but it took a long time to straighen it out with also filing police reports, going to the banks to cancel the cards, etc. NOT FUN.

I think there is also an American Express Travel Card which works like a debit/credit card but you only put a set amount on it. I think it does have a service fee but you may feel safer with it. Maybe others can give you more info on it.

I worked at the front desk at the Dolphin a good number of years ago (95-98) and if a guest wanted to use the minibar and phone, w/o leaving a credit card on their account we took a $50 A DAY deposit for the length of their stay. So if you were staying for 5 nights we would require a $250 additional deposit on top of their room and tax charges.

If the guest wanted to be able to charge back to their room, meals and purchases in the gift shops at the Swan and DOlphin only (can't charge things from the parks back to rooms at Swan/Dolphin) we would take a $100 a day deposit. 5 night stay= additional $500 deposit.

Each day the front office would run a report w/ guests who had high balances on their accounts who were either paying w/ cash or had credit cards declined for that amount of $$$ and contact guests who needed to pay off the balance &/or leave additional $$$$ for the remainder of their stay.

And if the guest's didn't do so, we would lock them out of their rooms until we received payment. So hated doing that, because we would get screamed at by the guest when they couldn't get into their room!!!!!!!!!!!!! But what are you to do? Take the chance of the guest leaving w/o paying?

I would call the hotel directly and find out their current policy for this. So this way you are prepared when you check in.

Have a great stay! :flower:

You might want to check with Disney because I don't think they take the checks that you get with your credit card, since they can't do the tele check (or whatever it's called) authorization. Same thing with bank checks, they won't take them. I had my purse stolen once, and the person charged a bunch of stuff on my debit card - the bank had all the money back in my account within 48 hours so you don't need to worry about that.
