I finished reading Jodi Picoult's book, Nineteen Minutes a few days ago. I've been mulling things over about it and the ending bothers me.

I thought that the characters were well developed and the plot was sad and riveting. There were times that I almost cried while things were happening to Peter.

My problem with the ending lies with the fact that Josie was convicted of shooting Matt. If I was reading correctly, I thought she was trying to defend herself and Matt from Peter and she shot at Peter, missed and the bullet ricocheted (sp?) off of the shower drain, hit Matt, went through him and into the tree outside the window.

If the shooting was done in self-defense since Peter was aiming at her and Matt and Josie's aim was poor, Matt getting shot was accidental when Josie hit him. Why would she be convicted?

Is the problem that she didn't tell anyone for so long? I just don't get it.

Can someone shed a light on this for me?

If I remember correctly, Josie aimed the gun at Matt with the intention of shooting him. The bullet then ricochetted and hit the tree outside. That is why she was charged with murder.

Yup. She had every intention of shooting Matt. That's why I love Jodi Picoult. She gets me every time with those surprise endings.

She's got a new book coming out on April 7th that looks really good. It's about a couple who have a teenage daughter with brittle bone disease. They can't afford her medical bills, so they decide to sue the doctor who delivered her. In order to do that, they have to say that if they had known their child was going to be so sick, they would have aborted the pregnancy. Boy, does that bring up some ethical issues.

Ah, OK. What confused me was what Patrick found in the drain. I thought the ricochet was from the drain, through Matt to the tree.

FWIW, she should have aimed the gun at Matt. He was a jerk of a BF with a capital J. Whether he lived or died, he ruined her life... through abuse or prison.

I'm going to start My Sister's Keeper today and I finished The Tenth Circle before Nineteen Minutes.

I like Picoult's research into her subjects so far. From the rape and it's aftermath interwoven with The Divine Comedy in The Tenth Circle, to the multitude of victims and affects of their actions to the outcome in Nineteen Minutes.

My Sister's Keeper is my favorite of all her books. It touches on a rarely-discussed but highly emotionally charged topic.

I guess I've got to get off the DIS, get my cleaning done so I can read!

Thanks for the good words on my next reading venture!

I agree that you will love My Sister's Keeper. I have read that and 19 Minutes. I'm reading Vanishing Acts now.

I have read every one of her books, I've been a huge fan for years. My favorite remains The Pact but I have yet to read one that I did not like; just some more than others. Her writing style is so beautiful that I consider it art.

I love Jodi Picoult. She lives somewhere near me, and her stories are sometimes set up around here. 19 Minutes was set in a town just up the road, and it was really cool to have the imagery of the real locations in my mind as I read.

My Sisters Keeper is one of the best books I have ever read. I blubbered throughout the entire thing, so have tissues handy.

I don't think I have read a book by Jodie that I haven't loved, but Sister's Keeper is by far her best work. I started reading and could not put it down. By the end,I was a horrible mess and I was still thinking about the storyline a week later. It is a highly emotional and sensitive subject, but it really does make one stop and think. I love that she touches on so many issues that most writers would not dream of hitting on.

I love her books... I am currently reading Change of Heart and it kept me up til 4 am reading it last night....
Such a great author

That's what I have on deck to read after I finish My Sister's Keeper. You are all right... I'm only in it a little... the cleaning took longer than I thought it would... but so far, it's excellent!

I love Jodi too. The only one I didn't like was The Tenth Circle. My Sister's Keeper, 19 Minutes, and The Plain Truth were my favorites.

I can't wait for the new one.

My Sister's Keeper was the first Jodi Picoult book that I read. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

I didn't care for Harvesting the Heart. I just couldn't get into that one.
I just finished reading Songs of the Humpback Whale, which was her first book. I've read:

Change of Heart
Nineteen Minutes
The Tenth Circle
Vanishing Acts
My Sister's Keeper
Perfect Match
Salem Falls
Plain Truth
Keeping Faith
The Pact
Picture Perfect
Harvesting the Heart
Songs of the Humpback Whale

I guess you could say I'm a fan ;)

I have a feeling that the list of her books that I have read will be as long as yours very soon. She's my new James Patterson.
