It's been years since I've stayed at Fort Wilderness. Do they still offer golf carts to rent? If so, can they be reserved in advance or is it first come, first served each day? Are they hourly rentals, daily rentals, length of stay rentals, etc.?

Just curious as we'll be staying at the Polynesian this trip and I want to show my wife and kids around Fort Wilderness one day. I was thinking that renting a golf cart (or bicycles) would be the best way to do this on one of our non-park days.

First of all, getting into FW if you are not staying is a challenge. If you arrive by bus, no problem, but driving in is discouraged by the front gate guard. New security regs and proceedures.

Also, I don't know if you can rent a cart if you are not a guest, I would guess not. Parking in the overflow area and biking in would work I think.

We have tried to get in when staying on property but not at FW and have been turned away most of the time. They have a traffic problem I guess and don't want anyone driving around that doesn't belong.

I'm staying on-property (Polynesian) and I'll be arriving at Fort Wilderness by Launch (boat) or by bus. We will not have a car and we'll be using Disney Transportation for everything.......so, parking will not be an issue for us.

Are you saying that Fort Wilderness guests are the only people who can rent golf carts and bikes at Fort Wilderness? I know the Polynesian will rent bikes and boats to anyone. Anyone else heard of this?

I just saw, on the PS Calculator page, that you can reserve a golf cart up to 1 year in advance. I'll just give the bike-barn a call. Thanx anyway.

I don't know ... I just meant that I doubt it. During peak season golf carts go quickly so I would assume some limitations on non guest rentals might apply. I hope you can. For $45 a day, not sure how many non guests would even try ....

Another option you may want to consider is to rent bikes at the Wilderness Lodge and take the bike trail from the Lodge over to the campground. We have stayed at the Lodge several times and done this...very anxious to pick out our future site for when we can take our camper down to Ft. Wilderness. You could take a boat launch from the MK to Wilderness Lodge..if the Poly doesn't offer one...and then bike over to the campground.
If you take a water launch directly to the campground from Poly..and wanted to rent a cart ...I believe you would have quite a walk to the bike barn(where the cart rentals are)..which is located near the meadow trading post..you likely would have to get a bus to the bike barn.
Honestly if you have a nice day..the bike ride is a pleasant way to spend some time in the campground. Don't know the ages of those in your party..but the WL does rent bikes for all ages..including those with baby seats and training wheels.

......that's a great idea. We're 42, 42, 12 & 9. All of us ride bikes on a regular basis so that would be a great way to show my family around Ft. Wilderness.......as well as the trail between the two resorts.

Plus, I'd hate to take a golf cart away from a Ft. Wilderness guest who may want it for that day......just so we can view the campground. Since golf carts are obviously on a limited basis, I'm sure the campers' needs outweigh ours. I didn't realize it but, it appears this may be as discouraged as "pool hopping" (which I personally despise).

Bikes will be just fine for us......and probably a lot more fun in the long-run.

The golf carts are only available to FW registered guest. We even had trouble getting a cart for people that were visiting us for a day. We ended up having to rent one in my name and one in DWs name. The carts are fun but expensive. As long as the weather is nice Bikes would be the way to go.

There is no front gate guard; only the guard shack on an adjoining access road. It is no problem. We go all of the time.

Carts are impossible without a reservation and you cannot bike your way in. Bike rentals are not a problem but for carts they ask you for you site number even with a reservation.

If you are visiting park at the overflow lot and take the bus in. It is no problem at all. Just do not try to enter through the FW check-in lanes. You cannot drive around FW even if staying there. You can only drive in and out. There really is no traffic problem.
