Ya, 46 is pretty dead. At the junction of 46 and I-5 is Lost Hills. It really is LOST!! Dumpiest town around!

I do like Paso Robles and visit the wineries there whenever passing through.

We almost always stop in Lost Hills to get gas and get a cold drink, one trip we were in one of the junk food resturants and wee-man from the "*******" MTV show was there with a posse. We got out of there before they started acting up to their namesake haha

We stop in Lost Hills EVERY trip, on the way down, that's where I stop driving, we get gas, use the bathroom, grab a snack if we need one. On the way back home it's where we stop for gas, we don't usually switch drivers, DBF usually drives us home. It's a rest stop town, it's little but it's not that bad!

i live in the central valley, so we just take 99 all the way down to I-5 and get off at Harbor. We usually find traffic once we hit the LA area, but its the easiest way from our house.
the Navigation suggest alternate routes, but were not so sure about the other freeways either.

Why did it take you so long? 101 is as good as any interstate so 70mph is the norm. If you took highway 1 where it exists then ya, it would take you 6 hours! That drive is 250 miles or so. Should be about 4 1/2 hours although once you get into LA the traffic can make it much worse.

I have always taken I-5 the entire way there and have never hit too much traffic. I would suggest just staying there the whole time.

We drive from South of DL to Pasadena quite often. We alternate between the 5 and the 57/210 routes, during evening rush hour. We have learned that the 5, being far more direct, is always faster (provided there are no major accidents).

Since it will be Sunday, for you, stick to the 5. Unless, there is a major mishap, it will be quicker.
