? About Foreign Language in High School for College Bound Students

Here in WI, a minimum of 2 years is needed. I would suggest those 2 years be CONSECUTIVE since the material might be harder to process if you skip a year and then try to go back to it.

Interesting to see the differences in this.

In our county, you need 3 years of a foreign language to get an Advanced Studies Diploma, which is the kind of HS diploma that colleges require. However, the better schools would like to see 4 years (can be 2 years of 2 languages).

Edit: Just did some checking and it's a Virginia state requirement of 3 years foreign language for an Advanced Studies Diploma, there is no provision for this to vary by county.

I was about to post this :). I took 2 years of French, 2 of Latin in high school. Completely worth it, as no university will consider you unless you have at least 2 years of language.

Foreign language is important. IF you have 4 years in high school, many colleges will allow you to skip foreign language in college. I always advise people who are not that interested in foreign language to take all 4 years in high school. College language instruction is much more difficult.

I didn't know that. I hope it's true. The GA university system requires at least 2 years of foreign language to be admitted to any of their 4yr universities. DD17 is in Latin 7 now--she's translating
"The Anieaed"(SP?) chapter by chapter. So I'd say she has a very good grasp of the language. Hopefully, that will give her a leg up in college. Certainly it has helped her in Lit and Anatomy & Physiology. And it helps her translate a little Italian, too. I don't know too many colleges that offer Latin these days.

Most of the colleges in my area require two years, except the college I'm at (St Scholastica) requires three. I only had two years, so I had to take two semesters (accelerated program, so we actually finished it in one semester) of language. It wasn't hard, but it pushed out my graduation date, and I hate paying for something I could have gotten for free. :headache:

You better believe my son will be taking three years of language! ;)
