I've never cruised before and have a question about the process of declaring items.

Must you declare EVERY item purchased or just the items purchased from the duty-free shops?

Is the dollar amount that each guest can spend still $600? Is that total or just the most you can spend on duty-free purchases?

Thanks in advance!

You can spend any amount you want. Any amount over the limit allowed is what you pay duty on. You declare everything you bought including items on the ship but no duty is paid unless it is over the limit.

On one cruise we went over and what my husband did was list out all what we bought, where it was bought and the amount spent. The duty was only on the amount over the limit and we were surprised that the amount we owed was so low. It was not the ordeal I was picturing in my head.

Remember family members can combine their limits so say the limit is 600 and it is a family of 4 then the family is allowed 2400. No listing out is needed, you will just quickly fill out the customs form and when you get off the ship you will hand it to a customs worker. The web site for customs is great and Dave's DCL tribute site explains it all. Limits vary among ports so the eastern differs from the western routes on duty allowances. Kathy

If you spend less than your allowance you don't have to list any declarations.
