Perry rhymes with merry, and very, and berry. Good one bethbuchall!

Dont blame it on the NE either... Marry/Merry are two different words here as well! Go listen to trains song "marry me" he doesn't say "Merry Me".
I still cannot figure out how to pronounce Mary, merry and marry differently. Is one of them pronounced murray? My head is spinning....
Mary is a subtle difference.
But marry and merry are very distinct.
Marry, Larry, Harry, the infamous Barry
merry, Perry, Jerry, the also infamous berry
Marry Larry rhymes. Marry Jerry does not.
Mary, marry, merry and Murray - ALL pronounced entirely differently.

Same pronunciation.
Aaron is male, Erin is female
(I say them both as ER-in)
ETA-We can only select one option in the poll..so only if we think it is the same sound/different or only if we think one spelling is a given gender..not both.
What? Beer and bear are closer? bear and bare are the same sound but beer has a long e - totally different.

I tremble in fear.
Mary rhymes with fairy. Long ā.
The 'a' in marry is a short 'a' (sorry, my iTouch doesn't have the curved symbol) and is pronounced the same as the one in man.
Merry is also a short vowel sound, but the 'e' that's in the word. It's pronounced liked the 'e' in Meryl - please tell me none of you who are having trouble differentiating the sounds would call the actress Maryl Streep?
Or 'Laura Petrie' Merry Tyler Moore?

Marry is pronounced with a long a sound.
Murray yes...sounds different. The rest are the same and why the heck do I need to worry about voice recognition software?
You can't convince people of what THEY hear. Mary, merry, marry are all the same to me...so to me it would be the same as Merry Tyler Moore.

Really? A long a sound?? The month of May has a long a sound. So you say May-ree?? I have never heard anyone say "Mary" or "Marry" with a long a sound.
