Dont blame it on the NE either... Marry/Merry are two different words here as well! Go listen to trains song "marry me" he doesn't say "Merry Me".

They sound the same to me....they could be saying merry me in the song as far as I know.

I still cannot figure out how to pronounce Mary, merry and marry differently. Is one of them pronounced murray? My head is spinning....

Me neither...people are nuts! :confused3

Mary is a subtle difference.

But marry and merry are very distinct.

Marry, Larry, Harry, the infamous Barry

merry, Perry, Jerry, the also infamous berry

Marry Larry rhymes. Marry Jerry does not.

all the same...

Mary, marry, merry and Murray - ALL pronounced entirely differently.

Y'all are gonna be in a world of hurt once voice recognition software takes off. :lmao:

Barry/berry and marry/merry may explain why I made an A in Phonetics. Some people in class simply could not hear distinctions.

Same pronunciation.

Aaron is male, Erin is female

(I say them both as ER-in)

ETA-We can only select one option in the poll..so only if we think it is the same sound/different or only if we think one spelling is a given gender..not both.

Same here. :)

What? Beer and bear are closer? bear and bare are the same sound but beer has a long e - totally different.

Mary rhymes with fairy. Long ā.
The 'a' in marry is a short 'a' (sorry, my iTouch doesn't have the curved symbol) and is pronounced the same as the one in man.
Merry is also a short vowel sound, but the 'e' that's in the word. It's pronounced liked the 'e' in Meryl - please tell me none of you who are having trouble differentiating the sounds would call the actress Maryl Streep?

Or 'Laura Petrie' Merry Tyler Moore?

Marry is pronounced with a long a sound.

Merry and marry anne nor even close to sounding the same here.

Mary marry carry Cari Larry Harry hairy Barry fairy Gary vary

Merry berry Kerry ferry Jerry Perry very

Geesh...is this still going on? lol

I bet some of you say "li-berry." ;)

Murray yes...sounds different. The rest are the same and why the heck do I need to worry about voice recognition software? :confused3

I tremble in fear.

Lol...me too!

You can't convince people of what THEY hear. Mary, merry, marry are all the same to me...so to me it would be the same as Merry Tyler Moore.

And since I have a flight in 8 hours to Disney I think I will go to bed! :thumbsup2

Walt Disney World! How could it be any simpler?

Aaron = Animal Kingdom
Erin = Epcot

It's not just about how people hear the sounds, it's about how they say them. And according to the basic rules of pronunciation - available in any dictionary - it seems as if many, many people are mispronouncing or confusing long and short vowels.

eta: The voice recognition comment? I'm seeing ads for Dragon Naturally Speaking on my screen :rotfl2: That program won't work right if Different words are pronounced the same.

Mary rhymes with fairy. Long ā.

Marry is pronounced with a long a sound.

Really? A long a sound?? The month of May has a long a sound. So you say May-ree?? I have never heard anyone say "Mary" or "Marry" with a long a sound.

Murray yes...sounds different. The rest are the same and why the heck do I need to worry about voice recognition software? :confused3

Same for me. Mary, Marry, and Merry are pronounced and sound the same. There is a user on the DIS named MerriePoppins or something like that. When I "hear" or say it, it sounds exactly like Mary Poppins, which would sound just like Marry Poppins. The "Meri" in Meriweather sounds like the same sound, too. (And the "weather" is pronounced just like "whether". I'm sure people will now say that they pronounce weather and whether differently.)

I can't believe people think Mary and Merry are pronounced the same. You don't even have to hear the words, you just have to look at them to know they can't possibly sound the same. :confused3

My daughter's name is Laura. In our area it's pronounced like Lora, not Law-ra. We prefer the first but are not too annoyed by the other.

I've a sister called Laura and we pronounce it Lora but I'm from Ireland so I guess we say a lot of things differently

Lol, if you say so!

::yes:: This. When posters have said there is a long a in Mary, I also assume they are saying May ree. Who says Mary that way? I say Mare (as in horse) ee.

I don't understand it either- you would think that it would have been corrected by teachers while they were still in school. I know people named both Mary and Merri and they would not be amused to have their names pronounced the same!
