Ah-nt ... ant is a bug or my son if I shorten his name

Aunt = ant here... which led to a sort of funny story.

My niece's preschool class was doing a play. My sister was going out of town for a few days and the teacher said that she would send my niece's lines home after they got back from their trip, but that the story was a Brazilian folktale about animals. My niece had been assigned the role of 'the ant' and she wanted to let my sister know so she could start working on costume ideas. The teacher indicated that it would be nice if she could wear some sort of Brazilian looking costume.

My sister called my mother and me and all three of us were wracking our brains trying to figure out how to make a Brazilian-looking Ant costume. A few days later, when the script came home, the highlighted part was AUNT, not ANT. Apparently not *all* of the characters were animals! An Aunt in Brazilian clothing was a lot easier than an Ant. (For what it's worth, my niece (age 4 at the time) thought she was supposed to be an Ant as well.)

This story made me smile!

well, LOL, i'm from alabama, so, the majority of the time, i hear the word "aunt" pronounced "aint". i said it that way for most of my life, but, over the past few months, i've been consciously working to pronounce it "ant".

I don't know how to edit my poll answer! I hit the button for pronounced different but I meant to hit pronounce the same. That's what I get for drinking wine while browsing the forums, lol.

I am in Canada (Southern Ontario) and everyone I have ever known says Erin/Aaron the same, as well as merry/Mary/marry, berry/barry, hairy/Harry, etc.

But its good to know that some people are convinced that anything different than what they do is wrong!

I can't believe people think Mary and Merry are pronounced the same. You don't even have to hear the words, you just have to look at them to know they can't possibly sound the same. :confused3

Looking at words to determine their correct pronunciation doesn't really work in the English language. Through and trough appear to be rhyming words but definitely are not. If you looked at to, two, and too would you think that they could possibly sound the same simply from appearance?

It's evident that many people pronounce Mary and Merry the same and many others use a different pronunciation for each. Neither set of people is uneducated or lazy or incorrect.

You do know that someone will now have to come along and let us know that they pronounce them differently.....right??? :)
