Aaron Sorkins quote: What did you think?

My 12 year old loves to socialize and wear sweatpants (to school!). She's also on the honor roll and a competitive soccer player.

I think we're doing just fine over here.

I'll have to tell DD17 that someone is on to her about the sweatpants - she was planning to wear some today.

I'd have told her this morning before she left the house at 5:30am in order to volunteer her weekly shift serving breakfast at the homeless shelter, but she was already gone when I woke up. I'll leave her a note next time so she dresses appropriately and doesn't bring shame to the whole teen generation.

Also, it just amuses me no end to hear anyone with a young child decide what is and isn't "right" for the teen generation. Oh, my friend, you are going to learn those lessons the hard way when your very own baby girl becomes a teenager. Yes, you are - and those of us who have been there before are going to enjoy it immensely.

What if they are Designer sweats? :rotfl:

They could be diamond encrusted sweats on Mother Theresa's behind and it would not matter. It's all about the overall superficial appearance and nothing else.

Ok, I'll say that sweats aren't the most beautiful clothing items in the world. I don't even think that about the sweats I myself have on right now. ;)

But who really cares? What does wearing sweats have to do with having a future or in general what kind of person you are or will be? I just think that they're comfortable and they keep you covered and that's enough.

What if they are Designer sweats? :rotfl:[/QU It doesn't matter. I wonder if we should add sneakers, tee shirts and caps to the list. Lets face it, anyone who would walk out of the house in any of those items, should be in the same boat as the sweats people.

Well, seeing as you edited it out, but it still appears thanks to "The Rule" your original post was 50% Sorkin's quote, and 50% your take on what young girls wear.

What should we have been stuck on? The fact that your assessment of his quote was woefully inaccurate?

LOL Yes, it was...since she obviously missed the thinly veiled insult to Sarah Palin. :lmao:

I snickered as soon as he said it, as I knew exactly what he was referring to. :thumbsup2 And judging by the audience's reaction, so did they.

sorkin has some kind of weird hatred for sarah palin, he lost me when he called her a maker of snuff films because she killed a caribou.
strange stuff.
I am a vegetarian and even I don't think hunters that kill an animal and eat it are doing snuff or torture!

Yep, he was referring to Sarah Palin. This is the second or third time in the past few months he has insulted her publicly. Very classy.:sad2: Apparently the return to civility lasted about 1 week.

And yes, the audience obviousy knew about whom he was speaking. Their reaction was typical Hollywood hypocrisy.... it's perfectly OK to insult "certain" people, but they (Hollywood) must never, ever be the target of insults, ridicule, etc. Bravo Ricky Gervais!

I think the idea of pointing out that smart is a good quality is nice. I agree with a PP that good actors aren't by definition smart. Many are, but many are not.I also agree with the PP (though it has only a minimal relation to the quote in the OP) that dividing the awards by gender is nutty. Every year my kids ask me WHY they do this and every year the answer is --I have no idea.

I think wearing sweats (or even fairly revealing stuff if they are "out" and not going to school or whatnot) is not such a big deal. I also think you can care about socializing AND the future. A balance there is probably the healthiest (with more thought to socializing--it is one f the major things teens SHOULD be learning how to do well).

My own teen hate sweats, hoodies, PJ pants as day wear, etc. So I guess she would not bother the OP. My own teen (14) is also (in my opinion) far TOO concerned about the future. She knows what she wants to be when she grows up, where she wants to go to college (undergrad, grad and PhD). She studies and reads all the time and would probably never socialize if I did not make her. I make her because I feel it is important to her development and her happiness as a human that she learn how to make those social connections and how to enjoy life just happening. She;s getting there--but I have to push her to see that it is okay to do things that aren't "smart" (cerebral) and to enjoy them at least once in a while.

No, but every am at the bus stop there are a few that always do.

Am I the only one who finds it creepy that an adult with no teen of her own is paying enough attention to know that specific girls often/always wear the same type of pants to the bus stop every day?

whoa....I didn't know about the SP reference (did not know that about Sorkin) ..that isn't why I said I liked it. Not getting that I felt the emphasis was on "smart"...so did my DD so I have no problem at all......

also, I said there is nothing wrong with sweat pants. That isn't because DD wears them, though I would let her!!!! She is a good kid, with a kind heart, and she gets very good grades. Many of her friends are the same and wear sweat pants to school. There is just no correlation.

I don't follow Aaron Sorkin, so I have no idea how many times he's referred to Palin. :)

I thought Ricky Gervais did a great job.

Oh i'm sorry what should I do while i wait behind the bus that pics them up every AM? Creepy really? Get over yourself. What you are implying is VERY rude and serious.

And to clear it up the assoication with attire and wanting to succeed clealry has gone over many heads. Ever heard of the phrase "dress to impress"? Yes they are only in HS or MS whatever it may be but how you dress is a reflection of yourself. Yes, if I'm going to the gym or grocery shopping I'm wearing sweats. Things have become "relaxed" in my eyes when it comes to even dressing. If you don't have pride in how you look, whats next? All that seems to matter to SOME teens is what phone they have. It's very rare to see a teen with a book in their hand and TO ME it's just sad to see girls this way.
AND IT ALL GOES BACK TO WANTING MORE! Or being ELITE.
