Aaron Sorkins quote: What did you think?

Amongst others, as well.

As to the subject at hand. Certainly "Elite" is not a bad word, I agree with that. "Elitist" is, however. Taking the attitude that someone's future is based upon their attire is an elitist attitude.

I think Sorkin's comments and the assertions of the OP are 2 completely unrelated topics.

Yes, they are.

I'm more and more disgusted by the things I see and hear come out of SOME teenage girls mouths. This small group of girls have no pride in their attire. Either they are completely exposing themselves or they are in sweatpants.

There used to be a female professor at my college who I respected above all other teachers I ever had.

One day I saw in in the grocery store in sweatpants.

She is still the smartest, most earnest people I know.

I don't know what attire has to do with the worth of an individual.

Your example is proof positive that they have nothing to do with each other.

If that was the case, the popularity of the "Mismatched" sock thread would be nothing but a harbinger of doom for our society. :rotfl:

Ok Obviously there is nothing wrong with sweatpants when the occasion calls for it. I just don't understand the everyday wearing of PJ pants or sweats. Having some pride in your appearance at least most of time. Yes, there are sometimes when us ladies just want a ponytail and a comfy pair of sweats, but all the time? (rhetorical)

I don't have the time nor inclination to worry about what other people are wearing. You obviously do.

As long as all the important bits are covered (whether it be by flannel, fleece, silk, etc) it doesn't matter.

You say it's okay to wear "ponytail and sweats" sometimes, but not all the time.
How do you know these specific girls are wearing sweatpants all the time? Maybe they just wear them sometimes but that's when you see them. You said your observation was based on seeing them in malls or passing them outside. How would you know that these girls are dressing like that "all the time"? :confused3

No, not their future but beginning healthy concerns about their image.

And by passing random teens in the mall, you know what they are wearing all of the time?

So why not start a thread about that? That has nothing to do with Sorkin's statement.

Sorkin was claiming that the women at the awards show were "Elite" because they found something they loved and have put 100% into that passion so they could become the best at it. To the point that they were nominated by others within their industry for their heart & passion. That is certainly to be commended.

He was not saying they were elite because of how they dressed, how they look down their noses at others they deem "beneath" them.

I think you've completely misunderstood his statement.

:snooty:
You might be in for a wild ride when your one year old gets a bit older.

I just don't understand why it's that big of a deal. Sure, society sets a set of standards for dress. Most people aren't going to to go to work in an office, or a wedding, or a formal dance, in PJs or sweats. if that's how someone is going to school or the grocery store, how does it change anything? It doesn't make someone a bad person. They just want to be comfortable.

Girls should not be embarrassed to strive for what they want. "Work" might be a four letter word, but that doesn't make it bad. Paris Hilton is not a role model. I agree with Aaron on that. But, there are much more important things for a teenage girl to deal with than the clothes on her back. Sex, drugs, school work, family. If little Sally is getting F's, making her wear jeans isn't going to fix that. if she is getting A's, why does it matter if she is doing it in pajamas?

Everyone seems to be STUCK on the clothing reference. :confused3

Well, seeing as you edited it out, but it still appears thanks to "The Rule" your original post was 50% Sorkin's quote, and 50% your take on what young girls wear.

What should we have been stuck on? The fact that your assessment of his quote was woefully inaccurate?

bwahahahaha :rotfl:

You realize everyone can still read what you originally wrote, right?? :lmao:

OK, in response to the idea that people are getting stuck on the clothes, I am going to take this one bit at a time:

“And I want to thank all the female nominees tonight for helping demonstrate to my young daughter that elite is not a bad word, it’s an aspirational one. Honey, look around, smart girls have more fun, and you’re one of them.”

I agree that elite is not a bad word, and everyone should strive to be the best person they can be. If there is something you want to do, do it as best as you can. As for "smart girls have more fun": being elite in your job doesn't make you smart, especially actors. And not all actors are good role models. Heck, not even all award winning actors are good role models. I like the sentiment, but I'm not sure that actors are a good representative of the idea.

Also, this is only slightly related, but it still bothers me that awards are divided by gender. The Golden Globes, Oscars, Emmys, Grammys, all seem to say that a female and a male can't be the same type of entertainer, and therefore there must be two different awards.

I'm more and more disgusted by the things I see and hear come out of SOME teenage girls mouths.

Same with boys.

This small group of girls have no pride in their attire. Either they are completely exposing themselves or they are in sweatpants.

Don't care.

They are more interested in socializing than school work or thinking about their futures.

I think it's necessary to balance your life. I think it's also important to realize that not all teenagers know what they want to do with their future. I agree it's important to learn and get good grades in school, but you can't focus on your future when you aren't sure what your future is going to be (I know my current job isn't anywhere near what I thought I was going to do, even sophomore year in college). If you have decided already you want to be a musician or actor or athlete, it's important to get as much practice as possible. But you still need to have time for at least a little fun.
