Aaaack...just back from the Halloween store..

We have a sweet 16 party on Halloween night so I had to get a costume for my 14 yo dd. Didn't want to rush into anything so waited until today Yikes....pretty much every costume for a teen girl is so.....um, trampy, I guess is a good word. My dd was horrifed. She wouldn't wear anything like that in a million years even if I would let her. She ended up getting an MandM costume ($45 later) because it was the only one that she would wear!

A few weeks ago, I took DD10 to a big costume shop for a Halloween costume. DH called and asked if we were having any luck and I told him no. I said, "The girl costumes go from princess straight to skank, with nothing in between." I don't want to dress my DD like a hoochie.

Oy! It's like they sized down a Frederick's of Hollywood catalogue.

I feel your pain! do you know how difficult it is to find a daycare approprate costume for an ADULT? I had to make my own just to be in the zone.

Its not just the teen costumes- my daughter is in a size 8 childrens and most of those outfits they have I would not let her get--they had a rack that was a playboy line- complete with the playboy bunny over the top of the rack and the costumes were my DAUGHTERS size--its disgusting how they think people should dress children even if it is just for halloween!!! I would rather her be a bloody ghoul than a hooker for halloween!!

So true! Unless you have a very young child, your choices are VERY slim if you don't want something trampy and revealing. I'm ready to start making my own---if only I could sew.

It's disgusting isn't it? I bought my DD a pink pirate costume, but we took it to the tailor, had her add a thicker lace at the bust, let the sides out some and DD MUST wear shorts underneath. It's so sad that they've turned a fun holiday into a fleshfest for preteen and teen girls.

I just bought DD11 a witch costume that is a little with how short it is, but she agreed to wear her leggings and long sleeved t shirt under it that she wears for soccer So she will be covered head to toe It is seriously sick what they have done to the costumes for kids.

All those tween skanky costumes. It makes me wish I could sew.

And 90% of the costumes for women are the size of a swimsuit. I think men must be in charge of the costume companies or something.

oh tell me about it.... and i'm the 16 (almost ) year old girl!

i would MUCH rather be scaring kids than parents with my costume... last year i had an eigth grader that i knew come to my house and my jaw dropped. it's crazy what they think we want to wear... and if you're not one of "those" girls, like me, you aren't "cool"

well i'd rather be the biggest nerd in the world. it's insane! what happened to the normal outfits??

I just remembered the girl that came trick-or-treating at our house last year showing more cleavage than I could ever hope to have.

that's why i haven't ever purchased a costume from a store. most are cheaply made and nothing i would ever wear. i ended up deciding on being flo the progressive insurance lady this year. last year my boyfriend and i dressed up as wayne and garth (i was garth ).

No arguments here. We have a hard time making sure DD13 doesn't look skanky, but she doesn't want to look like that either so that makes it much easier. She got to dress up for school today, I let her wear my kitty ears (I usually wear them on Halloween to work) with her knee length black dress and knee high striped socks. She was going to wear tights but decided the socks are cuter, and yes, she has shorts under the dress, that's a house rule. If you're not wearing a skort you're wearing shorts. She drew a nose and whiskers on her face, she looks cute and NOT sexy.....I'm not looking forward to next year, but I'm not letting her dress like a hoochie.

My signature costume was dressing as a baby through my tween and even my teen years.

I just didn't like dressing up--didn't like buying costumes.

So I would buy a baby bottle, put my hair up in pigtails, throw on a little makeup (no idea why as babies don't wear makeup--but I put on blush!), and wore jammies.

I even dressed like that for a costume party in college.

Completely fine. So if you are ever in a bind--that can be an option.

Thrift stores are also great for buying various things. I dressed as a flapper one year as an adult and we were able to find my husband a suit and me a dress at a thrift store that wasn't trashy at all.

My 9yo is tiny, so she still fits in smaller costumes and is Sharpay going to the prom.

For DD11, we doctored a ballet recital dress and added some beautiful butterfly wings. Seriously, you know you're in trouble when the recital leotard covers more skin than the Halloween costumes available in the stores. She's wearing this dress in navy.

I found a cheap cotton navy mini-skirt at Target to wear underneath so you can't see the leotard bottom.


DD9 was much easier. She's going as Hermione from Harry Potter. Long black robe, over black jeans and a white oxford shirt with a tie. Perfectly modest costume. I saw an awful lot of Hermione Grangers at her school this morning!

Seriously, there's got to be a happy medium between the dumpy "Harry Potter robe" and the jr. stripper costumes out there.

We start costume shopping in August because of this. DD10 found (finally) a cheerleader (adult size!) that works. She is wearing a shirt under it, though. It was very frustrating this year.

I know what you all mean!! Ack - it's terrible. It seems like you're either a pumpkin, bumblebee, princess etc when you are a kid, and then it goes right to Slutty Nurse, etc. No thank you!

Did any of you see "Mean Girls"? There was a line in that movie about how basically Halloween was the chance for girls to dress risque and not get call a sl** by the other girls. The Lindsey Lohan character said something like, "The really hardcore girls wear lingerie and some animal ears." Yikes!

We allowed costumes this morning at our middle school. My favorites? 3 bags of jelly beans (clear bags full of balloons), a Christmas present, a giant Spongebob made from a cardboard box, several fairies, a skateboard (a student put wheels on his chest and a board on his back...he could even roll!), and my personal favorite: a pig in a blanket! My co-teacher dressed in a pink shirt, borrowed my piggy ears and nose from our play 2 years ago, and wrapped up in a blanket. It was so funny.

I am Tonks from Harry Potter today. My hair is very, very bright pink. I wore boots, a skirt, a long sleeved shirt (all black) and a sparkly cloak. Carried a wand and tried to cast spells on everyone I encountered. Unfortunately, not many people knew who I was. Tomorrow for trick or treating I'll be a pirate lady.

Too much trash at the halloween store.... Guess someone figures that junior size females have to be sluts from the local strip club or a street corner.... and not much for the larger sized female....

The ONLY thing I contemplated getting was the Star Trek costume shirt..... Yes, I'm a geeky girl, not a slutty one.

I heard a report on the radio this afternoon about this very topic. Apparently, it's a trend everywhere. Based on what they were saying, these trashy costumes are making people a lot of money, so don't expect them to go away anytime soon.
