AAA discount during value season question

My parents recently joined AAA and are hoping to get a discount for their trip in August. Disney quoted $1977.63 for 4 nights/5 day park hopper with DDP for 3 adults (I am going as well) at POR. I had read somewhere that in August the AAA discount should be around 20% during value season, we're looking at the dates August 13-17. AAA quoted my mom $1844.63, which is only about $130 less. I was figuring the price should be around $1500 if it is 20% off. Her "discount" from AAA is less than 10%. Is there something we aren't doing right??

Thanks!

The discount is off the ROOM portion of your package only.

That may be the difference in your math right there.

I'm not sure what the AAA discount is.. but I'd be stunned if it was 20%. I don't think it's that much.

the pp is right about the discount being off the room portion only of a package....the discount varies based on which season it is and which resort level(deluxe, mod, value etc)
I copied this from Mousesavers ~

During Value Season you can get up to 15% off at the Disney Deluxe and Disney Vacation Club resorts, or 20% off at the Value and Moderate resorts and the Ft. Wilderness campsites.

During Regular Season you can usually get up to 10% off at the Disney Deluxe and Disney Vacation Club resorts, or 15% off at the Value and Moderate resorts and the Ft. Wilderness campsites.

During Peak Season and Summer Season you can usually get up to 10% off at the Disney Deluxe and Disney Vacation Club resorts, or 15% off at the Value and Moderate resorts.

The only time AAA/CAA discounts don't usually apply is Holiday Season (around Christmas) at the Value and Moderate resorts.

My wife was interested in joining AAA, but hearing that Disney discounts were available sealed the deal.

We are going 8/10/07 to 8/17/07 staying 7 nights @ POP w/ 2 adult 8 day PH's and DDP. AAA quoted us $1,599.64 (a $130.00 savings over Disney pricing, which equals 20% off the room rate), so we are paying $73.50 per night taxes included.

as stated before the discount is 20% off the room portion of your package.

Moderate hotels in value season have a rack rate of 145 std/160 water view

145 X 4 nights = 580 + tax = 652.50
20% savings = 130.50

CEPMOM:

Thanks for the additional info on AAA discounts.. I'm learning all over the place today!

Ahhhh, I see. I didn't realize it was off the room only. Well, I guess that means it is a pretty good deal. Thanks!

Looking at the AAA Web Site, I saw that it was $116 a night for 08/17-08/24. One room, one child and one adult. This was for CBR.

I am going to call AAA lady back tomorrow about a quote that would include tickets. See what she can offer me. I also want her to break it down for me.

I just posted a question similar to this before I did a search (oops...my bad). Do you know if the 20% discount is applied to the rate after taxes have been deducted? I would assume you would have to pay the tax on the rack rate, then apply the 20% discount to the remainder, but I want to be sure.

Also, another related question for you room rate experts. I have two packages - one for 2 adults/2 children and another for 1 adult / 1 child. When I price out the packages, after deducting the amounts for DDP, 1-day base ticket, and insurance, I come up with different nightly rates, with the rate for the 2 adults / 2 children being much higher. Forgive my ignorance, but is the rate based on the number of adults in the room, or is it just a flat rate for the room?

Sorry to be so confusing :guilty:

umm...i figured it using deduction including tax and got pretty much exactly the difference they were quoted (off by 2.50) so I would think you pay tax on the reduced room rate.

In the op's situation if you only got the percent off the rack rate but paid tax on the full rack rate, the discount would only have been ...

145X4 nights = 580 x .20 = 116

on this part can you give us more specifics....the nightly rate shouldnt be higher. some packages say based on 2 adults so i guess it is possible if you are looking at a special but for rack rate it shouldnt matter. Is the child 18? so anyway are you sure you are putting everything in the same?

running rack rate -

May 10-15, 1 adult 1 child (age 7), ddp , 1 day base ticket, std room caribean beach = 1311.35
same thing 2 adults 2 children (age 7) = 1694.60

price difference =383.25
Deduct out the dining plan for the extra 2 (249.90) = 133.35
1 day tickets for 1 adult and 1 child are 123+tax = about 130.

So somewhere in there there is a few dollars of discrepancy but atleast we can see there is no specific difference normally for the difference of 1 child 1 adult to 2 children 2 adults.

Looking at the spring deal -
1 adult, 1 child (same specifics) = 1165.10
2 adult, 2 child (same specifics) = 1548.30
Difference of 383.20

Practically the same difference as above. So again there doesn't seem to be a difference in room rate for one or 2 a/c.

as far as the aaa numbers go, i cant actually look at that on the system but can only figure out what they 'should' be.

I did think of one other thing...if the only availability for standard is a room with a king size bed..the max occupancy for that room is 2 plus one under 3 in a crib. So i guess it's possible that by changing to 2 a, 2c the lowest priced availability is higher....

Thank you so much for your help. I really appreciate it. I went back and refigured and I think what I did the first time is that I subtracted 2x as much for the tickets on the 1 adult + 1 child reservation. I was subtracting the amount for 4 tickets instead of 2. Once I fixed that, it came out pretty close (within about 3 dollars difference). Wouldn't it be so nice if we could get quotes with the prices broken down for us?

Now the only thing I still don't know is how to apply the AAA discount: pre-tax or after tax is deducted. My TA is on vacation all week so I guess I'll call her next week if I can't find out here.

Thanks again :)

as i said in the earlier post running numbers it does seem that it is off the taxed rack rate room.. Or another way to say it you only pay tax on the reduced room rate. When we compare the prices by figuring it our selves (only counting tax on the reduced rate), we get pretty much the same numbers. Remember however that it wont make very much of a difference either way. The above example showed that if you paid tax on the the reduced rate your savings was 130 but if you paid tax on the rack rate your savings was only 116. so you are talking a $14 difference in that case and that was for the entire 4 night stay...it amounts to just about $3.50 per night. However I am pretty confident as I said that you only pay tax on the reduced rate.

:cool2: Thanks for the info. Every little bit helps!
