YMMV, but my AAA is currently offering $25 AMEX gift card rebate on purchase of $1,000 in Traveler's Checks (even dual signature ones have no surchage when purchased as member @ AAA office).
I agree they are old-fashioned, but after an issue w/CC fraud out of country during cruise a few years ago that had me scrambling, i always make sure to travel w/2 different CCs and at least $1,000 in Traveler's Checks jik. Typically, i'll save most of TC & apply them towards next trip or pay off any credit card purchases when the bills come due from the current trip.
