A WWYD ? Wisdom Teeth related....

Oh well, the time has come I guess when I must get my bottom right wisdom tooth removed (had the other done in 99) and I don't want to. However this little bugger has been bothering me on/off for awhile but nothing major. Well this past May it flared up about two weeks before my cruise, decieded not to do it then. Well here I am two weeks out again the it is screaming at me to get it out...lol!

I can actually see that the skin on my jaw bone has torn and I've got a little lump between my molar and where it should be.

The tooth according to the x-ray is growing "down" into my jaw bone towards the molar. And is totally impacted.

It's really painful today, infact it feels like the wisdom tooth is moving up and down on the side of the molar (under the gums) each time I chew.

WWYD? I could sched an appointment ASAP but then if I have complications I risk my vacation. I also have heard horror stories of shattered jaws, and/or people needing graphs of bone when a tooth grows in this way. Any advice.

i got mine done last year the day before thanksgiving..it got infected, but i was fine within a week and a half...if it were me, id get it done now but i know id be worried about infection--good luck!!

That's my concern, is if it's infected and somehow it affects my trip... =o(
I think they just like to go on vacation with me, always flaring up when it's almost time to leave.

I don't see how you've put up with it this long. I HATE dental related pain. As long as you have a reputable doctor you're happy with, I'd have it one ASAP.

DH's was just like that. He actually went into Outpatient Surgery to have his removed. He was sore for a few days but within 2 weeks he was fine. Plus they give you good drugs.
Good luck and I hope you get it taken care of soon and enjoy your cruise.

o i understand! just think , if you get it done asap..then you wont have to worry about it ruining another vacation!

True, I guess I should call... anyone out there had serverly impacted teeth, what was your outcome?

You should go ahead and get it done. You are at a risk of infection leaving it that way especially with so much irritation involved.

When I had mine out I did have a dry socket but it sure wasn't enough of anything that would make me not be able to enjoy a vacation.

DS is getting all 4 cut out in a couple of weeks. The oral surgeon said to plan on 4 days of recovery.

My Ds just had his out, and it wasn't a big deal. I'd get it taken care of, rather than finding myself out at sea with problems later!

I had 4 impacted wisdom teeth removed at one time...I was on pain pills for a few days (and I am not someone that ever needs to take those!) and it took a good 2-3 months before I could open my mouth normally...it opened enough to eat and talk but not like a normal mouth would. I had mine done int he hospital since I have some issues about being put under in a dentist office...I prefer the hospital for that...
Having a regular tooth removed is no big deal, its just those darn impacted wisdom teeth that stink!! I had one of my back molars removed during my lunch break at work and then went back to work....

Hi! Greeting from someone who works in an oral surgery office. Everyone is different (some people do take a while to recover), but the standard recovery time is about 3 days of being pretty uncomfortable and then a week or so of just plain discomfort. Within a week or a week and 1/2 you should feel fine. There are always possibilities of problems, but if you have a good surgeon and follow their directions TO THE LETTER, you should be fine. If you are a smoker, I don't care what kind of nicotine fit you are having, DO NOT SMOKE FOR TWO DAYS!!!!! That's the biggest source of dry socket we see. The second most common source of dry socket is people who don't like to swalllow after oral surgery and spit a lot. Spitting can dislodge the blood clot so you don't heal properly. You really should get it done as soon as you can if it looks like the picture you posted because that tooth will continue to push on the molar next to it until it ruins it as well.

Here's a thought.......Why not get the opinion of an oral surgeon.....someone trained in these matters......rather than getting advice from an online message board?????

If it's causing you pain, you'd better get it done. Otherwise, the pain could really ruin your vacation!

I had an impacted wisdom tooth removed while I was pregnant--if it hadn't been hurting, there's no way I would've done it at that time. It was years ago, but it must've been ok because I don't remember much of it now.

If you wait until after your vacation, you risk having problems during the cruise, like an infection from the impacted tooth or needing an oral surgeon during the cruise.

I would think it better to have it done now with 2 weeks to heal; instead of worrying if it will get worse the next 2 weeks, you'll know you're healing and it will not be a problem on your vacation!

Well the pain was unbearable last night so I left work at 5am to head to the ER. I have a bad infection in my gum/jaw and into my neck. I am on penicillin and pain pills until this clears before they can remove the tooth, the earliest they could do this would be the 7th and I leave on the 9th. Oh well!

Hi Honeypooh,

Did a *search* on wisdom teeth as my dd just had ALL FOUR () done this am and is miserable. She's now finally sleeping after being super dizzy and nauseous, likely from the oxycodone. DH even came home as she was really scaring me! I've been in touch with the oral surgeon who says that's normal but i'm thinking i'll have her analgesic changed.

Do you mind me asking you (or anyone!) what analgesic your office uses? Seems like there should be a better alternative, even Tylenol 3. DD said the dizzyness and nausea is worse than the pain.
