A Weekend of Beach Club Eats: Part Three! Update 5/26: Yachtsman Steakhouse!

OK! I'm in! Great pics and choices so far.

I'm one of those who will take pictures of the whole buffet. I don't really care what the other people think!

You are a HERO. See, I appreciate photos like that SO MUCH, so I was disappointed in myself that I was too afraid to take any of my own. Especially at such a slow restaurant! :rolleyes2

I'm here too! Glad to hear you had really solid experiences at Captain's Grille (one of my favorites), Nine Dragons (haven't been there in ages, but those shrimp & taro lollipops look interesting!), and Via Napoli (that carciofi pizza is great). :thumbsup2 I was missing Disney food already, but your reviews have me longing for it even more. :goodvibes

Heya DDW! :wave2: You need to plan a trip, it's been far too long since we've been blessed with one of your stellar reviews! And mmmm, carciofi!

We'd gotten breakfast just once before at the Marketplace, on our first trip, but it was a nice memory for us...we sat in the lovely, sunny solarium, sipping coffee, and enjoying tasty breakfast croissants. We were hoping for a similar experience, but when we got to the Marketplace...no more croissants! Instead, the new breakfast sandwich was offered on plain white bread.

The breakfast menu at the Marketplace is VERY limited, and listed the sandwich, a breakfast platter, and oatmeal. I really, really wanted eggs and some sort of fluffy carb (no other way to describe that!). I chose the breakfast platter, which comes with eggs, a biscuit, bacon, and potato casserole.

Now I KNOW it makes me seem difficult, but I asked if they could substitute fruit (which was in the breakfast serving area...I think for kid's plates? or oatmeal?) for the bacon. They said no. Fine, fruit isn't on the platter anyway, I'd just give the bacon to DH. Then I asked if I could have extra eggs instead of the potatoes (which looked NASTY) and was again told no. Again, not a big deal, that's not how it comes. BUT I will say it was kind of surprising. When we ate at ASMu's food court in January, I got the breakfast bounty platter twice. And both times, they let me completely customize it, leaving off the things I didn't want (bacon, sausage) and getting more of the things I did want (french toast sticks, eggs). Kind of strange how you can get that service at a value QS but not a deluxe.

So this is my breakfast:
mini-IMAG1267_zpsd8be5e8d.jpg

Breakfast Platter with eggs, bacon, a biscuit, and 'potato casserole'.

That potato casserole? Was WORSE than it even looked. It was a runny, soupy, ice cold mess. I can't even tell you what was in it...frozen hashbrown-style potatoes, and cream? Cheese? Arsenic? I have no idea, but I definitely didn't want to take a second bite. The eggs were fine, a bit wet. Biscuit was extremely dry. Charlie said the bacon was ok. That chocolate croissant though was delicious! I really wish I'd just gotten that and a yogurt. When we go back I definitely won't be trying a hot breakfast again!

C chose the sandwich:
mini-IMAG1268_zpscb954614.jpg

Eggs, bacon, and cheese on toasted white bread with 'potato casserole'.

He liked his sandwich, said it was a bit dry and not nearly as good as the old croissant, but decent. Like me, he didn't want more than one bite of the casserole. That's when I knew it wasn't just me being picky...it was bad. :lmao: He really loved his cinnamon roll, so at least we both still gave props to the BC Bakery!

And at least the Solarium is still a lovely, serene place to eat breakfast:

mini-IMAG1271_zpsb2009196.jpg

We decided to stay poolside instead of taking a break for lunch, and visit Hurricane Hannah's, which had been under refurbishment during our last BC stay!

mini-IMAG1286_zps10a7a4ae.jpg

The new place is HUGE! With a nice bar area and a great new menu:

mini-IMAG1291_zpsc86f2ecd.jpg

That chicken sandwich was calling my name, and Charlie completely surprised me by ordering the same thing! I thought for sure he'd choose the item that had bacon in it. :rolleyes1

mini-IMAG1288_zpsdfd24a86.jpg

Grilled Chicken Breast Sandwich - with a four-cheese blend, tomato, avocado and arugula. Served with fries.

And here's a shot showing the inside...generous helping of avocado!
mini-IMAG1289_zpsff8bb34f.jpg

This sandwich was hands down better than any sandwich I'd had at Beaches and Cream. It was SO GOOD. The chicken was perfectly grilled, juicy white meat...the cheeses added an awesome flavor without too much heaviness, the tomato slice was thick and super fresh, and you simply can never go wrong with avocado on anything. Even the fries were better than B&C's. Perhaps the heat was playing tricks on my mind, but I just loved this meal!

I may have dissed the food at B&C, but I was still a strong supporter of its ice cream. :lmao: When we were done swimming for the afternoon, we decided to stop in for a sundae.

For the first time EVER in, I don't know...5? 6? Beaches & Cream trips, we did NOT order a No Way Jose. I know, I know, you're thinking "what FOOLS!" right now. And you're right! It was terribly foolish!

I had been eying something new on the menu, something which combined three of my great food loves. Peanut butter. Bananas. And ice cream!

I'm talking about this creation:
mini-IMAG1294_zps89adb979.jpg

Grilled Banana Bread and Peanut Butter with caramelized bananas, whipped cream, and a scoop of ice cream

WHAT a disappointment. :sad2: First of all, when I pictured this puppy being made, I imagined someone lovingly slathering slices of banana bread with peanut butter, putting them together, and then delicately placing them on the grill.

We were seated at the counter, so I got the watch the creation process. Two slices of banana bread were ripped from a package, thrown onto the grill bare, and seemingly forgotten about about ten seconds before they turned black. They were dumped into a bowl, and then a miniscule amount of liquid peanut butter topping from a squeeze bottle was squirted on top, followed with a scoop of vanilla, whipped cream, and about a spoonful of caramelized banana bits.

BOOOOOOOOOO is what I say to this. It sounded so epic, but it was anything but. It was very dry, you could barely test any peanut butter OR banana, and the only part I really liked was the scoop of vanilla and whipped cream. For almost the same price I could have had a No Way Jose, which never disappoints! I'm sorry for cheating on you, No Way Jose! Never again!

But, if I HAD chosen the NWJ, Charlie would not have been able to get this:

mini-IMAG1295_zps541555f5.jpg

Classic Banana Split - ripe banana, three scoops or ice cream (vanilla, chocolate, strawberry), pineapple, strawberry and marshmallow topping, finished off with hot fudge, butterscotch, toasted almonds, whipped cream and a cherry

Yes, a banana split of his very own! Let me tell you, he was in heaven. I couldn't even steal a bite, because I don't like the toppings. I told him he'd never finish it, but oh, oh no, he did. He did and he loved every single bite. So at least HE enjoyed his choice, and he got to try something new, which is good, because next time it's back to the shared No Way Jose. Or else. ;)

Heya DDW! :wave2: You need to plan a trip, it's been far too long since we've been blessed with one of your stellar reviews! And mmmm, carciofi!
Agreed - I'd love to post some reviews again! In fact, since I've known my summer work schedule for a few weeks now, I might get the chance to review again soon. ;)

I loved reading your positive review of Hurricane Hanna's. I remember when it reopened and the new menu came out - it looked completely improved, and (most of) the reviews have matched up with expectations. The lobster-shrimp roll hasn't gotten good feedback (apparently it has too much mayo and filler), but the chicken sandwich is another thing I'd love to try.

As for Beaches & Cream, I liked that banana bread dessert for two key reasons: (1) I'm not the biggest fan of peanut butter so I didn't need a lot of it, and (2) I got it with pumpkin ice cream. More peanut butter and/or caramelized banana would've definitely addressed the dryness, though. Sounds like you shouldn't have deviated from the No Way Jose. :rotfl:

Great reviews! That chicken sandwich with avocado sounds amazing!

You are just like me about Ohana. I don't like the bread or wings either, but I do like the potstickers. I am so bummed about the honey lime dressing. I loved it soooo much. I don't think i will like the new salad because I hate mandarin oranges.

We planned on going to Beaches and Cream for our july trip but I just decided I don't want to last week. Nothing looks that good to me. After reading your reviews I am glad I decided to get cancel. I might just go to Boardwalk Bakery for lunch!

I have been trying to work in a trip to B&C in August to try that banana bread dessert. Guess I will stop trying! :(

We are trying Nine Dragons for the first time though. We do have good local chinese food, both sit down & take out so I have put off trying it but then I think, we have good pizza and I still go to Via Napoli! So we are giving it a try. Glad to hear that it is one of your favorites! :thumbsup2

Oh that's right, I remember your review! I was so impressed with your amazing choice of ice cream! :lmao: Wish that had been an option on my visit, YUM!

The salad was such a disappointment, it used to be SO good! And I have a sweet tooth, so you KNOW it's bad if I'm complaining about the cloying flavor! It was still a good meal overall though!

Can't go wrong with the bakery! We had planned on stopping there this trip but never made it. And I DO have big faith in B&C's ice cream! I've just never had food from there that was all that tasty.

I have been trying to work in a trip to B&C in August to try that banana bread dessert. Guess I will stop trying! :(

Aww!! It might just be me though! Or maybe the CM who prepared it was just too rushed and it's normally made with more love. Their sundaes are still fantastic though!

We are trying Nine Dragons for the first time though. We do have good local chinese food, both sit down & take out so I have put off trying it but then I think, we have good pizza and I still go to Via Napoli! So we are giving it a try. Glad to hear that it is one of your favorites! :thumbsup2

That's a good point about VN! Although, there is NO SUCH THING as 'good' pizza down here, which may be why VN always has me drooling! :lmao: But yes, I really enjoy Nine Dragons! It's tasty, the service is good, the restaurant is lovely, and it's never chaotic! :thumbsup2

It's hard to believe, but we actually went back to Epcot for more sugary goodness that afternoon! Yes, after we had our B&C sundaes. Charlie wanted to try the strawberries from China since I had raved about them so, so off we went!

mini-IMAG1296_zps4e91bfdf.jpg

Double dose of beauty!

mini-IMAG1298_zpsdb77e7ec.jpg

Charlie digging in! He really enjoyed them, but I'm not sure if he LOVED them like I did. And wooo, is he red in that picture! We were both working on pretty bad burns by this point, which wound up affecting our plans. But more on that later. :rolleyes2

Ugh - every time I see pics of those strawberries it makes me wish we had made it down for the F&G Festival. :rotfl: Since they were so popular, maybe they'll return sometime soon - perhaps at the F&W Festival or maybe as a permanent snack option? (wishful thinking on my part ;))

Finally, we got to try the Yachtsman Steakhouse, which is hugely popular among the live updaters in Barb's thread lately! I think I was the fifth person sending her pics from YSH in one week! :lmao: Charlie had really wanted to eat here on his birthday BC trip in September, but they were closed for renovations then. Turns out it was worth the wait!

We only had to wait 5 minutes or so to be seated, but waiting was a pleasure since we got to watch the action in the aging room!

mini-IMAG1302_zps1732c411.jpg

How cool is that?! Unless you're a vegetarian, I guess. :lmao:

We struck GOLD with our server, Yun. She was the most outgoing, energetic, hilarious server I've ever encountered, and she was just always ON, all the time. From the moment she greeted us, it was like we were old familiar customers that she knew well. She instantly created a relaxed, happy, silly atmosphere for us, and while that might not suit some diners at a signature restaurant, it was perfect for us two big kids!

She even surprised us with Mickey straws for our drinks! :lmao:

mini-IMAG1304_zps3c4e891f.jpg

But she was also excited with Charlie's very adult choice of drink, the Truffle Olive Martini:
mini-IMAG1305_zps34e0a0ca.jpg

I kind of pushed him into ordering this because I wanted to try it. :rolleyes1 He's not a martini fan, and said the olive was the best part. I really liked the flavor..it was very subtle!

The bread basket was delivered, and I went right for the gold:
mini-IMAG1308_zps24a7290a.jpg

The Yachtsman onion roll! I actually wouldn't have even tried this a few months ago. Suddenly, without warning, my lifelong ban on onions lifted and I've found myself becoming a huge fan. Strange how tastes change! But I'm glad they did, because this was SO good. Warm, soft, flaky, savory, delicious! Charlie actually preferred the sourdough roll, which I think is nuts!

The appetizers all sounded delicious, and I really wanted to try the bay scallops. But my body was screaming out for some ruffage, so I went with the less-exciting caesar salad (hold the croutons):

mini-IMAG1309_zpsd26db352.jpg

Sure, it may be boring, but it was VERY well made! And HUGE. The lettuce was perfectly crisp and fresh, there was a perfect amount of dressing and delicious, aged parmesan. The coppa secco (a sort of ham) is an interesting addition, and while I hate pork, I tried some and it wasn't half bad! But I gave most of it to C.

But THIS was the true winner:
mini-IMAG1310_zps33b5d723.jpg

Heirloom tomatoes with fried mozzarella curds and baby herbs.

Lucky Charlie! OMG, those cheese curds were ridiculous! So rich, crispy, smooth, multiple textures and flavors at once! With the herbs and oil and freshness of the beautiful tomatoes, SUCH a great combination. If we go back I am so getting this for myself!

On to entrees, there was only one choice for me:

mini-IMAG1311_zps5c98289e.jpg

12oz Prime New York Strip Steak with gruyere potato gratin and peppercorn bandy sauce

That's right, you can keep your filets and t-bones, I'm a strip fan! My steak was juicy and perfectly cooked (medium well, I like my meat dead thanks), and the sauce was lovely! Not too syrupy, a nice kick of flavor, and just the right amount.

I hated that gratin though. It was like a dry hunk of nothingness. When I ordered, Yun went into great detail about the alternative sides I could order in place of the potatoes...I think she was subtly telling me she wasn't a fan. I wish I'd taken her advice and gotten some vegetables on the side instead! But it really didn't take away from my enjoyment of the steak.

Charlie went with...
mini-IMAG1312_zpsb531fd05.jpg

16oz Boneless Rib-Eye - bone marrow, brioche, red wine butter

Another perfectly cooked steak, this time cooked to a level that doesn't make chefs cry (medium!). It looks kind of shriveled and small in the photo, but it really was an impressive piece of meat. Charlie loved it, but again, the sides kind of paled in comparison. I liked the marrow more than he did, but we both agreed the brioche was tasteless, especially in comparison to the bread basket. So maybe next time we'll swap out ALL sides from anything we order.

I didn't really need a dessert menu, I knew what I wanted!

mini-IMAG1314_zpsebd8c08f.jpg

Peanut Butter and Pretzel Gianduja Cake with salted caramel gelato and liquid ganache

Ok, forget the cake entirely: that little spoonful of salted caramel gelato? HEAVEN. That may have been the best gelato OR ice cream I've ever tasted. It was amazing. Such a perfect burst of flavor in a little creamy frozen ball! And there was a little cloud of powder next to the gelato that I swear was powdered peanut butter, although the description doesn't mention it (tasted exactly like PB2, which I have in my pantry :thumbsup2 ) which added yet another layer of flavor to the gelato! The cake itself was fine, kind of like a layered mousse, but the flavors just did not come close to the gelato!

Charlie went with one of his favorite desserts, his classic fallback at, oh...any restaurant that has it on the menu:

mini-IMAG1315_zpse55ab66b.jpg

Creme Brulee!

I was teasing him relentlessly about his boring taste, but Yun came to his rescue! All night he had managed to order her favorite appetizer, entree, AND dessert, so they shared a very close bond. :lmao: As far as creme brulees go...he declared this one the BEST ever! And he's had a LOT of them, so that's high praise! :rolleyes1

We had a great meal and an absolutely wonderful time at Yachtsman, with the best service we've seen since our magical night at Flying Fish. We enjoyed Yachtsman so much, it immediately shot to number 2 on our signature list!

It's taking years, but we're finally working through the signature restaurants! Our ranking of the ones we've tried so far, from best to least favorite:

1)Flying Fish
2)Yachtsman Steakhouse
3)Jiko
4)Le Cellier
5)California Grill
6)Narcoossee's

I know, we're crazy for ranking a 'fake' signature steakhouse above the beloved CG! :lmao: Next on our list is Brown Derby but I am most eager to try Artist Point! And eventually I'd love to return to Flying Fish, but Charlie refuses to eat there again and risk the chance of ruining the memories of "our most perfect night of dining ever" (his words :rolleyes1).

Great Yachtsman review! It's been over a year since we last ate there, but it seems that their heirloom tomatoes are always a hit. :thumbsup2 Also, you're so right about that salted caramel gelato - it's amazing! We once asked for a scoop of just that gelato and our server brought it to us for only $2! (It seems like great service is pretty common at Yachtsman :))

Hi Becky. I'm joining late but the beauty is that I got to enjoy reading all these reviews and thinking .. oh, I want that chicken sandwich from Hurricane Hannahs, oh no, I don't want that banana/peanut butter dessert at B&C, and oh yes, I remember they changed the salad at 'Ohana - boo! I liked the old version better as well.

I'm scared to try Nine Dragons... I love good Chinese food but I'm picky since I don't like the dark meats and the sauces are sometimes too sweet or not spicy enough. Sheesh, I sound picky!

Love the "princess" touch to your Captain's Grille breakfast. That is one of my favorite breakfast places which is saying a lot since after our first time eating there in 2010 I never wanted to return.

I love cheesey potato casserole, too bad the BC Marketplace version was a disappointment. Darn because I would try those if I hadn't read your review. ;)

Well I have just spent a very pleasant half an hour drinking coffee and reading your reviews (when I really should be doing the grocery shopping!)

We've never really considered CG before but the breakfast buffet looks really good. I would love the plain yogurt with all those yummy toppings

DH is very excited about going back to YSH in December and it's good to see so many positive reviews lately. I love the look of the heirloom tomato salad :)

Love the YSH review ... the tomato mozzarella appetizer looks amazing! I was a bit bummed that DS and I won't be heading there in August (he chose AP and I chose Blue Zoo for our two signature experiences) but now that there is a plan to head there in December, I am a happy camper!

I have to say though that as much as I loved YSH, Cali is the #1 Signature for us! Can't wait to see the results of the refurb!

Oh my, your reviews are making me hungry! I'm going to be adding YSH to my list. The bread service alone is enticing.

Looking forward to the rest. :thumbsup2

Gah! I must go back immediately! Do you think they'd mind if I made an ADR and only ordered five scoops of gelato? :lmao:

I'm scared to try Nine Dragons... I love good Chinese food but I'm picky since I don't like the dark meats and the sauces are sometimes too sweet or not spicy enough. Sheesh, I sound picky!

Noooo, not at all, I am the same way! I don't like dark meat poultry at all. The honey sesame chicken was all delicious white meat...but the sauce was definitely sweet! And nothing there is spicy enough by our standards.

Love the "princess" touch to your Captain's Grille breakfast. That is one of my favorite breakfast places which is saying a lot since after our first time eating there in 2010 I never wanted to return.

I love that! Just proves why second chances are important! :goodvibes I had a HORRIBLE meal at Yak & Yeti in AK the first time I ate there, but my second time was delicious...and six more meals there later, I've had no complaints!

I love cheesey potato casserole, too bad the BC Marketplace version was a disappointment. Darn because I would try those if I hadn't read your review. ;)

Ha! Well honestly, we may have had a bad batch somehow, because the pile of goop they served was SO bad I just don't see how it could even remain on the menu. I think it may not have been cooked right? Or...at all?

Well I have just spent a very pleasant half an hour drinking coffee and reading your reviews (when I really should be doing the grocery shopping!)

Ahhhh, you're speaking my language, I LOVE starting my mornings with a cup of coffee and some fresh reviews! ;)

We've never really considered CG before but the breakfast buffet looks really good. I would love the plain yogurt with all those yummy toppings

I'm a big breakfast lover so I quite enjoy breakfast buffets, but CG gets extra props because it's so laid back and relatively cheap! And not all the buffets we've tried have offered plain yogurt, so it was great to get it here and be able to customize it!

DH is very excited about going back to YSH in December and it's good to see so many positive reviews lately. I love the look of the heirloom tomato salad :)

If you love the look, you'll LOVE the taste! :thumbsup2

Wow, three sigs in your future, go you!! I'm really really looking forward to trying AP some day, so I look forward to your future review!

I have to say though that as much as I loved YSH, Cali is the #1 Signature for us! Can't wait to see the results of the refurb!
I'm actually looking forward to that too! It was so long ago that we ate there, I'm eager to give it a second chance!

Oh my, your reviews are making me hungry! I'm going to be adding YSH to my list. The bread service alone is enticing.

Thank you! And yes, what's better than hot fresh flavorful rolls? NOTHING!
