Mods, feel free to move this. Wasn't sure where to put this.
DBF and I flew continental to Disney on 11/13. We packed our mugs in our luggage (we had just gotten them in July, so they were the new ones). When we opened our suitcases, I took out the mugs...and both of the mugs were there with no tops! After digging, i found one of the tops, which was broken- there was no second plastic layer that you turn to cover the drinking hole- it was just the plain top with holes in it. I emptied my entire suitcase, and the other top was just plain MIA- now i packed these with the tops on, i know this for a fact!

While digging, I found at notice from TSA that my luggage had been searched. We aren't sure if they thought the mugs had something in them, and in the process of opening them they were somehow broken and threw out the other top? DBF thinks they have a deal with Disney, to break the re-usable mugs so you have to buy new ones:rotfl:

Either way, we came to the conclusion that because the tops were on, they had to look inside them, and somehow or another the tops were lost/broken, so pack the mugs with the tops already off :):rotfl:

heh, i wonder if you'll get flamed for re-using refillable mugs

So, you were on your way TO Disney with refillable mugs?

Interesting! Don't they change the mugs so people can't do this? We have mugs from Sept and never thought of taking them back in Jan to reuse them. We are just buying new ones.

You are not supposed to reuse them. They are good for the length of your trip.

Here we go again ;)

You do know that they are only reusable during your stay.
You are supposed to only use them during the one stay.

I don't really care, I'm not the mug police, I just don't have anything better to do today.

This usually starts a long thread about mugs, as you probably already know. popcorn:: (looks like it has already started since I posted)

As to your original question, since Disney does not seem to care if people reuse mugs I can't image they would have someone in TSA break mugs. (I know you were joking)

They can see through the mugs, but if they are randomly hand checking your bag then it is probobly a good tip if you have one of the old lifetime use mugs. Thanks.

And if Disney doesn't care, I don't understand why so many other people seem to.

That is why I said we are just buying new ones. I would have never thought of or done this...I don't understand where people even think of these things. I guess I am just too honest!

Question for those that do seem to care.

If I only use my mug for the filtered water is it ok to reuse it each visit?
If I buy an new one and bring my old one can I refill them both with filtered water?

(The only soda I ever drink is the free soda in Epcot)

Funny. I always thought those mugs were for length of stay only. Karma?

To the OP, I am reading your post exactly as it is written, thanks for letting us know not to put the lids on the mugs when packing.

I stopped buying mugs when the price went up from $5.99. Unless you are a coffee drinker they are just not worth it. They hold less than 12 oz with ice and I can buy soda from the Hess stations on property for (2) 12 packs for $6.00.

I wouldn't care, I'm just glad I'm driving down so I don't have to worry about the ones I'm bringing getting broken.

LOL.................OP, a bleak as it may seem, you will get through this............:).............and i agree..............one of the "mug police' that we encounter here periodically most likely has a relative working for the TSA............their spys are everywhere.....usually pretty well disguisedpirate::hippie::santa::bride::clown:

I can't wait to use mine from 2001. They had built in ice coolers and would light up any time someone made a wish!!!

Yes, the mugs are for "length of stay".

I bought mine not just for the soda, also as a souvenir.

If you can afford to go to WDW and stay in resorts more than once a year, maybe WDW thinks you can afford two mugs.

But what about the math - I have one stay of seven nights, you have two stays of theree nights each?

The mugs are really only a "good deal" if you stay a "long" time.

And so, that never ending question finally gets answered...'So, are there really refillable mug police???' Evidently...yes.

And if Disney doesn't care, I don't understand why so many other people seem to.

Many people come here, to the DIS boards, asking what the policy on refillable mugs is. And most of us try to give the rules according to what Disney has posted...mugs are good for the duration of the stay in which they are purchased in. That's what the signs say, that's what the mugs say (or something pretty similar...haven't seen the brand new ones yet). Do people reuse the mugs on subsequent visits? Yes. Do Disney CMs stop them? No, not very much.
However, we have seen a few reports lately of CMs commenting on refilling mugs that are not the 'current' style...so obviously being reused on a 'subsequent trip'. Not many reports, but they are out there.
Does Disney care? Who knows. But if someone asks me what the policy is, I'll give them the ruling as Disney has seen fit to post in their food court areas. Doesn't make me the 'mug police'...just makes me someone who is trying to correctly answer a question.
