Sorry friends but I am a bit annoyed. We added points to our account on our recent cruise. Great, whatever.

They forgot to get DH to sign one of the papers. So since we live in Canada, and it is some sort of important paper, we have to get it notarized. BY AN AMERICAN NOTARY! So we have to drive 'to the big city' (3hrs in the car IF there is no trafic) in order to go to the US consulate, pay to park, pay $30 for the notary.

I cannot believe that this was missed. So not magical.

The end, thank you for listening.

Taking a deep breath now. If this is the worst problem in my life then I am lucky.

Yikes- they are really making you work for those points. Hope the rest of the process goes smoothly!

Cancel the contract and buy resale. You can sign all of the resale papers in your home. :thumbsup2

Why would they not accept a Canadian notary or equivalent?

That makes no sense. Thousands of DVC contracts are sold outside the US every year using local signature verification.

Before I went through all that aggravation (because DVC made a critical mistake...hello?), I'd sure double-check with them to be sure it is really necessary. I'd also want to know WHY a US notary is required.

If you learn they are trying to pull a slick little trick because they are not licensed to sell timeshares in Ontario, I'd follow dizneynutz advice. If you skirt the law to make this purchase, you could find yourself in a legal bind later.

If you go through with the idea, I'd sure be expecting significant compensation for their mistake. You are going to spend a full day, plus gas costs, parking, and the notary fee because of their mistake. At a minimum, they should fully compensate you for all of that...perhaps with a Disney gift card, for example.

I would cancel the add on, since it's giving you such a headache.

Yah cancel it and buy resale. A Canadian notary can do everything you need on a resale. I find it odd they require an American one for a direct sale. You learn something new everyday I guess!

That's awful that you're having to go through so much trouble due to their error. I hope they are going to compensate you for that.

I'm not going to join the chorus of "cancel and buy resale" though. You don't say where you added points, so for all we know, you are buying something that isn't available on the resale market (VGC or BLT for particular use years or contract size). And given incentives, what you bought may be a better deal than you'll find via resale.

Thanks for the moral support. We addedd Grand California points at a pretty good price (once they do their cash back or whatever they call it). We have also already booked 2 cruises which use at least some of these points so cancelling and buying resale would cost us $180+hassle.

Apparently the state of California is very particular about their paperwork and that's why the notary has to be american. Which is crazy imho but whatev.

And yes, I better be reimbursed for at least my parking and the notary fee, apparently that is something that I need to discuss with my 'vacation guide' - the guy who sold me the extra points.

Yes, you are truly blessed if this is the extent of your unhappiness.

Why do you have to pay $30 for a notary? I am a notary and I am not allowed to charge a fee more than $4.00 to notarize a paper.

Possibly b/c it's someone at the consultate? OP are they doing, oh what's it called, "apostille", instead of just doing notary work? I remember reading that apostille is one step up from certifying, and that's up from notarizing...I wonder if the person is qualified for the max and that's why the cost?

What a bummer, though!

Wow....could you imagine if you lived in the UK. How the heck would they handle THAT one???
