A Vacation From My Problems (A Sept. 2010 Trip Report) - COMPLETED 12/14

Just throwing in a wild guess:

"she was brave and a model for young girls everywhere, and a credit to society" - Miss Congeniality? But most likely something else... :confused3

I'm so not on the ball for this movies quote game. The only one I could get was "Eve-A" from Wall-E. If it was Simpsons quotes, now THAT would be a different story!

I love how you always have the rides your kids conquered. Such a good dad :thumbsup2

Photoshop services were provided by a highly reputable firm: FreezinRafiki's Ace Rendering Technology (© 2010). I highly recommend his work, and pay no attention to the fact that I get a 10% commission from all of his fees from referrals.
Together with Cinematic Recording Arts Productions, we make a pretty good A/V team. And the best part of it? Neither of us has to stoop to low brow, juvenile bathroom jokes to get a laugh. :thumbsup2
Anyway, I'm always thrilled to meet people who have actually heard of Delaware.
And been brave enough to enter... (yeah, I'm still stuck on the Murderkill River thing)

This is going to become a reality in 8 short years. Pray for us:
If only you knew someone who could line all the roads in Delaware with pillows and rolls of Cottenelle Toilet Paper. :confused3

Space Mountain...CONQUERED!
:thumbsup2

How long before he realizes he's been had? About 2 seconds after the first drop. "This not slow, it's FAST!" he yelled. Being loving and compassionate, we laughed. With him, not at him, of course.
This would have been a great opportunity to explain how roller coasters convert potential energy into kinetic energy. And to explain how gravity pulls at all objects at a constant 9.8 m/s^2. And that you can't believe how he fell for that whole "slow" button nonsense. Life is full of teaching moments. Oh, but kudos to the CM for getting him calmed down and happy for at least the ride up!

The Barnstormer...CONQUERED!
:thumbsup2:thumbsup2 (Double Thumbs up for Scotty. I'd give him 3 thumbs up, but well, having three thumbs would probably cause me to be an outcast from society, shunned by my peers, and forced to live in exile in the remote, mountainous regions of the Himalayas instead of the normal, well adjusted, productive member of society that I am.)

Did I rush it? It felt like I rushed it.

Ocean's Eleven

+1 :thumbsup2

You were thinking of the remake, of course... right?

Oooh, oooh, I'm actually on for an update!

Inconceivable -- Princess Bride

Pop quiz -- Speed

Eve-a -- Wall-e

There is no slow button...
and
Scotty doesn't know this. -- The Middle

I don't remember if Stella is On the Waterfront or Cat on a Hot Tin Roof or if I'm completely wrong on both of them. (Edited to add: Never mind, I "researched" it and figured out it wasn't either of them, but since I guessed 2 already, I'll let someone else have that point.)

:thumbsup2

+3 :thumbsup2 for The Princess Bride, Speed and Wall-E. The Middle was beaten to that gag by an earlier show/movie. I was trying to pay tribute by inserting it in today's update.

Do you watch The Middle? We love that show! I can't ever seem to find other people who watch it, though. We think they have secret cameras recording our lives.

Oh, by the way....great update. I absolutely try to avoid the Indy Speedway at all cost, but my lovely husband is a sucker for anything that my oldest wants, so they ride it every trip....multiple times. And I sit. And sit.

The one thing I found amusing about the "new" Space Mountain is the 80s techno sounding music. When you hear it say "space, space", it makes me giggle for some reason.

You can't deny the appeal of driving a race car to any young boy. You also can't deny the fact that Test Track does it much, much, much better.

When did you hear that in the music? Like I said, I barely heard any of it at all.

"The new phone book's here...."

The Jerk

+1 :thumbsup2

Stella- A Streetcar Named Desire.

+1 :thumbsup2

Just throwing in a wild guess:

"she was brave and a model for young girls everywhere, and a credit to society" - Miss Congeniality? But most likely something else... :confused3

Was that a movie? I would have to turn in my Man Card if I ever admitted to watching that one. :rotfl2:

I'm so not on the ball for this movies quote game. The only one I could get was "Eve-A" from Wall-E. If it was Simpsons quotes, now THAT would be a different story!

I love how you always have the rides your kids conquered. Such a good dad :thumbsup2

There have been a few Simpsons quotes sprinkled in here and there. I wish I could find a way to work in the "Mmmmmm...64 slices of American cheese..." gag. :thumbsup2

And thank you for ignoring the "we dragged our kid kicking and screaming onto another ride" bit.

Together with Cinematic Recording Arts Productions, we make a pretty good A/V team. And the best part of it? Neither of us has to stoop to low brow, juvenile bathroom jokes to get a laugh. :thumbsup2

Perish the thought! Nothing but sophisticated wit here. And yes, I was hoping you'd notice that one. :thumbsup2

And been brave enough to enter... (yeah, I'm still stuck on the Murderkill River thing)

We're not so bad here. But I need to run. I'm having an old friend for dinner.

If only you knew someone who could line all the roads in Delaware with pillows and rolls of Cottenelle Toilet Paper. :confused3

Budget crunch. It's cheaper just to avoid going to the DMV to get her driver's license.

I supposed my son's gullibility could be an issue someday, but for now, I think Julie and I would prefer to continue to exploit it as often as possible. :thumbsup2

And Disney CM's continue to rock.

But you're in Wisconsin. People have cheese growing out of their heads there. I've seen them at Packers games. I don't think anyone would bat an eye at a third thumb.

Was that a movie? I would have to turn in my Man Card if I ever admitted to watching that one. :rotfl2:

Well, Sandra Bullock is quite a tough FBI agent in this one! ;)

It just sounded like a quote to me and for whatever reason this movie seemed to fit. :goodvibes

And once again I totally forgot to comment on the update... :scared1:

Sorry that your parents were sick that day. But I think the start of your day sounds pretty good. Conquering Space Mountain is quite a step!! I actually prefer roller coasters in the dark because I am afraid of hights and if I don't see how high up I am, I can't be afraid! Pretty illogical, but that's the way it is. :goodvibes

Do you watch The Middle? We love that show! I can't ever seem to find other people who watch it, though. We think they have secret cameras recording our lives.

We just started watching The Middle and we love it! I don't know anyone who watches it. The first time we caught it, it was a fluke. Now we dvr it every week.

Space Mountain freaks me out (I actually close my eyes....like it really matters) so I like having the music to focus on and that part just made me giggle because there weren't any words that I could hear except for "space, space" with a little pause in the middle of the words. I believe it was close to the end of the ride, but I'm not sure. I think I blocked out the rest of the ride.

Perish the thought! Nothing but sophisticated wit here. And yes, I was hoping you'd notice that one. :thumbsup2
Oh, come on. I may lose my glasses while they are on my head, but there's now way that one is slipping by. Great work.

But you're in Wisconsin. People have cheese growing out of their heads there. I've seen them at Packers games. I don't think anyone would bat an eye at a third thumb.
Have you seen the Nebraska rip-offs? I mean, come on, who would want to wear a big foam ear of corn on their heads. That's ridiculous. :sad2:

FreezinRafiki's Ace Rendering Technology (© 2010). I highly recommend his work, and pay no attention to the fact that I get a 10% commission from all of his fees from referrals.
Oddly enough, this photo doesn't appear to put you in any compromising situations. That seems a bit out of the ordinary for something done by the ice monkey.

Anyway, I'm always thrilled to meet people who have actually heard of Delaware.
Heard of it and been there... then I blinked and I was in Maryland.:rolleyes1

When we reached the exit, I turned around in my seat. There was Sarah, a big grin on her face. "That was FUN!" she shouted.
:thumbsup2:thumbsup2 Good for her! I can see her becoming an adrenaline junkie already. When you visit the studios next time, you're going to get a full dose of the Tower and Rock n Rollercoaster.:rotfl2:

I'm not a huge fan of ToonTown--it doesn't quite fit in with the rest of the MK to me. But then again, it isn't designed for grumpy young(ish) men like me.
Young(ish)???? Please!
I may have turned 29 2 weeks ago, but I still have a year to be a 20-something!

I kind of like Toon Town. I think I was 6 or 8 when it opened as Mickey's Birthdayland though, so I thought it was cool. Granted I haven't been in that part of the park in probably 16 years or so, but I thought it was a neat idea and gave the fab 5 their own little place in the park, much like Cinderella and her castle. That said, I guess I won't really miss it.:confused3

It worked when I took the Professional Engineering exam, which should make you very worried if driving through the state of Delaware at any time.
That explains my sudden need for an alignment... :scared1:
Honestly, I thought Delaware had some very nice roads. I just wish more of them were straight and actually ran N-S or E-W instead of angling and winding all over the place. I guess that really goes for about every state on the east coast though.:rolleyes1

Scotty cried through the whole line, all the way up to loading. We held firm (did you send in those Parents of the Year ballots yet?).
Parent of the Year is only a small feat. Remember the big picture. You'll have to save stories (exaggerated) and evidence of this to embarass him later on.:thumbsup2

("Crop-dusting" is an inside joke on the DIS Dads Club forum. It's a technique suggested by trennr for dealing with unruly guests at WDW, such as those who enter an auditorium and refuse to move all the way to the end of the row.)
First of all, I don't want to go to this class... Secondly, who really needs a class in this subject??? :lmao:

Oddly enough, this photo doesn't appear to put you in any compromising situations. That seems a bit out of the ordinary for something done by the ice monkey.
This was done as a family-friendly job. It's not what's in the picture, but what is missing...
That being said, I did do a commissioned work for Mrs. Knowitall that has already been alluded to in this TR. However, I'm pretty sure it will not see the light of the Internet anymore.

Wait until the Frozen Monkey goes on his trip...then I'll just have to beat the Meerkat. :rolleyes1

For once, I agree with Tennr On this one! ;)

Nice update Captain! We were out Christmas shopping today, so I knew you'd post an update. I saw your post via my phone while waiting for my wife to try on some clothes at a store in the mall, but it's nearly impossible to post from my phone, so I had to watch the quotes go by. The one from "The Jerk" really killed me to not be able to claim -- I love that line.

The only items I saw passing us at top speed were a butterfly, some ants, a custodial worker carrying heavy equipment, and a hamburger wrapper caught in the breeze.

You couldn't have written this without thinking of the opening scene to "Office Space", could you?

But then again, it isn't designed for grumpy young(ish) men like me.

A tip of the hat to "Grumpy Old Men"?

Julie just got me a TransSiberian Orchestra Christmas CD from the discount rack at Kohl's. Unfortunately, I think I discovered why it was there. A couple of the songs are fun, but on the majority of them, the Orchestra apparently thought we needed to hear them sing. :scared1:

Yeah....I can vouch for the scariness of this CD. :scared1: Good thing it was for charity!

So, since you are capt. Oblivious and your wife is mrs. Knowitall.....are the kids little knowitalls...or are they oblivious:confused3

:lmao: Little of column a, little of column b!! :rotfl2:

It was here that we found the perfect souvenir for Dave: a MK baseball cap with a monorail on it. I flipped it over and found that rarest of the rare items in Disney World: a clearance price tag, marking the cap at $5.99. :woohoo:

+10 :thumbsup2 for being a bargain shopper, honey!

This is going to become a reality in 8 short years. Pray for us:

Oddly enough, Scotty was a better driver than Sarah! I think all his games of Mario Kart finally paid off! (Oh, and I think they're raising the age for a driver's license to 18 in Delaware - we have 10 years!)

Scotty cried through the whole line, all the way up to loading. We held firm (did you send in those Parents of the Year ballots yet?). The Cast Member at the loading dock was a saint. She leaned in real close and asked Scotty, "Would you like me to push the SLOW button?"

Scotty nodded yes.

"Hey Maggie, we're pushing the SLOW button for this group!" she called to her helper. Maggie gave a thumbs-up. So the CM went behind the table and announced she had just pushed the SLOW button, which seemed to calm Scotty down.

:cheer2: Yay for cool CMs!!! :cheer2: :lovestruc

We got off right where we had started and walked back through ToonTown. We were getting hungry, but the kids spotted the Mad Tea Party and wanted to ride it. Hmmm...Tea Part before or after lunch? We went before, and I think it was the right call.

IMG_5672.JPG

<shudder>

You should post the picture I took that's blurry from all the motion....

And been brave enough to enter... (yeah, I'm still stuck on the Murderkill River thing)

Even after my nerdy explanation?

I'd give him 3 thumbs up, but well, having three thumbs would probably cause me to be an outcast from society, shunned by my peers, and forced to live in exile in the remote, mountainous regions of the Himalayas instead of the normal, well adjusted, productive member of society that I am.)

There's actually a kid in Sarah's class who has almost three thumbs! The thumb on his one hand is kind of split - I think the kid has 11 fingerprints!

We just started watching The Middle and we love it! I don't know anyone who watches it. The first time we caught it, it was a fluke. Now we dvr it every week.

Brick is my favorite!

That being said, I did do a commissioned work for Mrs. Knowitall that has already been alluded to in this TR. However, I'm pretty sure it will not see the light of the Internet anymore.

I have it saved!!! How do I upload a picture onto here? :woohoo:

Brick is my favorite!
{favorite}

Okay, not only is he super adorable, with a name like Brick Heck, how can you NOT love him?!?!?!

And while we don't have an Axl or a Brick in our family, I do believe that my oldest daughter (who is 8) is starting to lean toward the Sue side of the world. She is beyond self-conscious and shy which, of course, at Disney World calls out to CMs "Pick me! Pick me!" :headache:

One of these trips, I'm going to push her off her seat at Festival of the Lion King when they ask her to participate. And then, I'm going to yell "You got up! You have to do it now!"

(and I'll take one of those Parent of the Year applications, please)

:rotfl::rotfl:

Yeah....I can vouch for the scariness of this CD. :scared1: Good thing it was for charity!
I agree. The instrumental numbers are good. The singing ones...yeah, not so much.

Even after my nerdy explanation?
It was a fantastically nerdy explanation. However, it's still the MURDERKILL River.

I have it saved!!! How do I upload a picture onto here? :woohoo:
Sorry, the bro code does not allow me to answer. If I do, Mark will be allowed, under the code, to administer his choice of wedgie, purple nurple, or swirly next time he sees me. And frankly, I'm scared of him.

:rotfl: The day of riding the rides you usually avoid...sorry you couldn't get out of some of those, but in the end they make for great stories for us!!

The kids all look so happy on the tea cups, but just thinking about that ride makes me :sick::sick:

I made sure to mail my parent of the year ballot in extra early for you guys :lmao:
I do remember around the age of 6 or so I freaked out (after waiting an hour in line) when the doors to the haunted mansion opened. I booked it back through the line and broke the turnstile on my way out. My poor parents...but they continued to drag me on rides and ever since I am willing to try every ride at least once with!! (with minimal emotional scarring :rotfl2:)

Well, Sandra Bullock is quite a tough FBI agent in this one! ;)

It just sounded like a quote to me and for whatever reason this movie seemed to fit.

Well, I wasn't going for a quote there. But it was a good try.

I've actually seen the movie. Don't tell anyone.

That's not illogical at all! It's hard to get scared about something you can't see. Still, I like being able to brace myself for what's ahead.

We just started watching The Middle and we love it! I don't know anyone who watches it. The first time we caught it, it was a fluke. Now we dvr it every week.

The dad cracks me up with his blunt one-liners. I was rolling during one episode when they had tried to be different, better parents and failed miserably and he said,"I think we're going about this all wrong. I think we're actually good parents, and we just got stuck with crappy kids." :lmao::rotfl2:

Space Mountain freaks me out (I actually close my eyes....like it really matters) so I like having the music to focus on and that part just made me giggle because there weren't any words that I could hear except for "space, space" with a little pause in the middle of the words. I believe it was close to the end of the ride, but I'm not sure. I think I blocked out the rest of the ride.

You're not the first person who's told me they close their eyes on Space Mountain. I find that idea infinitely amusing. :rotfl2:

Silence of the Lambs

and by the way...eww.

^^That's a high quality Jungle Cruise-esqe pun right there.

+1 :thumbsup2 I wonder if Hannibal Lecter ever piloted the Jungle Cruise in his early years.

Have you seen the Nebraska rip-offs? I mean, come on, who would want to wear a big foam ear of corn on their heads. That's ridiculous.

Agreed. Sadly, Philadelphia also has a blatant rip-off--the cheesesteak-head. Again, not as original.

Oddly enough, this photo doesn't appear to put you in any compromising situations. That seems a bit out of the ordinary for something done by the ice monkey.

I'm sure it'll only be a matter of time before it happens.

Heard of it and been there... then I blinked and I was in Maryland.

But not before you got hit with a $4.00 toll for 10 minutes of driving! :woohoo:

So when were you in the area?

:thumbsup2:thumbsup2 Good for her! I can see her becoming an adrenaline junkie already. When you visit the studios next time, you're going to get a full dose of the Tower and Rock n Rollercoaster.:rotfl2:

Still, she was a little weird. We had extra Fast Passes, but she didn't want to go back on the ride. I thought that was odd.

Young(ish)???? Please!
I may have turned 29 2 weeks ago, but I still have a year to be a 20-something!

What's that, sonny? You'll have to speak a little louder.

I'm much more interested to see what happens with the Fantasyland expansion. That should be way cool.

I think it is an east coast thing. Roads were generally built up over wherever the horse paths went in the towns. Our major highways are pretty simple, though.

Parent of the Year is only a small feat. Remember the big picture. You'll have to save stories (exaggerated) and evidence of this to embarass him later on.:thumbsup2

Absolutely! :thumbsup2

First of all, I don't want to go to this class... Secondly, who really needs a class in this subject??? :lmao:

I think it would be helpful. Flying through hyperspace ain't like dusting crops, you know.

I've actually never seen the original.

Me neither. :confused3

This was done as a family-friendly job. It's not what's in the picture, but what is missing...
That being said, I did do a commissioned work for Mrs. Knowitall that has already been alluded to in this TR. However, I'm pretty sure it will not see the light of the Internet anymore.

:furious:

Don't make me come out there.

For once, I agree with Tennr On this one! ;)

Sorry, Glenn. I'd like to say my spies told me you were out of the office and that I did it just to annoy you, but in reality, it was just time for an update. I am glad to hear you have an appreciation for The Jerk, though. Such a quotable movie... Steve Martin will always have a special place in my heart.

You couldn't have written this without thinking of the opening scene to "Office Space", could you?

I absolutely could not, and was thinking of it the whole way. Good call.

+1 :thumbsup2

A tip of the hat to "Grumpy Old Men"?

No, just using a cliched phrase. There are a couple of quotes nobody has picked up yet--one small one in this chapter, another in a response from way back.

+10 :thumbsup2 for being a bargain shopper, honey!

Hey, where does that put me in the standings? -1250?

Oddly enough, Scotty was a better driver than Sarah! I think all his games of Mario Kart finally paid off! (Oh, and I think they're raising the age for a driver's license to 18 in Delaware - we have 10 years!)

(sigh of relief)

Nice job on the whispering gag! :thumbsup2

I have it saved!!! How do I upload a picture onto here? :woohoo:

:furious: I can see I'm going to have to start docking some points around here...

Sorry, the bro code does not allow me to answer. If I do, Mark will be allowed, under the code, to administer his choice of wedgie, purple nurple, or swirly next time he sees me. And frankly, I'm scared of him.

I see that saner heads are prevailing. I've always cut an intimidating figure. Just ask all of the high school bullies who beat me up daily.

:rotfl: The day of riding the rides you usually avoid...sorry you couldn't get out of some of those, but in the end they make for great stories for us!!

I'm wondering at what age you lose your ability to do the teacups? I loved these when I was a kid, and my kids love them as well. But every adult I know can't stand the sight of them. It becomes a fight to see who will have to take one for the team. When does this happen? 16? 18? 25? :confused3

Flying through hyperspace ain't like dusting crops, you know.

Star Wars... the real first one.
