A Tip for Saving Money on Adult Beverages

Here's something that Mrs. Homie and I do every trip. It's saved us a ton on "adult" beverages. Of course, it only works if you're renting a car (or using a towncar service that includes a grocery stop).

On our first day, we stop at a liquor store and buy beer, wine, bottled malt drinks like Smirnoff Ice, etc. We also buy SALT (this is important).

When we want a drink, we take our ice bucket and fill it half way with ice. Then, back in the room, we pour a bunch of salt into the bucket, then add some water, stir it around, and stick a bottle/can in the mix. In about 3-5 minutes, our beverage is perfectly chilled!

This tip enables us to drink ice-cold beer & other drinks without having to pay bar prices! :thumbsup2

Along these lines, there's a really good, reasonably priced liquor store about a mile from DTD. Head out Hotel Plaza Blvd to the end. Take a left on Apopka-Vineland, go straight through the next light. A mile (maybe less) on the right is an ABC Liquor store located in the front of the Winn-Dixie supermarket plaza.

The Winn Dixie is a great store too if you need to stock up on snacks.

Steer clear of the Goodings at the Crossroads - you may save 2 minutes of driving, but the selection is not great and the prices are outrageous! :scared1:

If you go to the Winn Dixie, sign up to their loyalty program. It's free and you can do it on line or on the spot. Once you're signed up, you instantly get the member discounts on groceries :thumbsup2

Ooooh, I hope that you don't mind if I steal this for the Disney practical tips list I've compiled. I bet there are lots of people (like me!) who would benefit from this. :rotfl:

Not at all! Feel free. Can I have a link to this document?

Great idea about the salt! We always stock a cooler with beer, whiskey and wine, but that salt in the ice bucket trick is something we've never done! Now, we don't have to wait for everything to chill!

I'd be happy to send you a copy; can you PM me an email addy? I compiled everything I could find on the boards into one monster document that can be used for easy reference. :)

I agree GREAT IDEA about the salt!! Never would have thought of that!!

Thanks!:thumbsup2

I love this tip! I've done this at home in a cooler with salt many times during the summer for BBQs, but never thought to apply it in a hotel room. Salt is now on my packing list (or shopping list). :drinking1
