A thought for the Day

No man who ever lived knows any more about the hereafter ... than you and I; and all religion ... is simply evolved out of chicanery, fear, greed, imagination and poetry.

Edgar Allan Poe

Heavenly Father, help us remember that the jerk that cut us off in traffic is a single mother who worked nine hours that day and was rushing home to cook dinner, help with homework, do the laundry and spend a few precious moments with her children.

Help us to remember that the pierced, tattooed, disinterested young man who can't make change correctly is a worried 19 year old college student, balancing his apprehension over final exams with his fear of not getting his student loans for next semester.

Remind us, Lord, that the scary looking bum, begging for money in the same spot every day(who really should get a job!) is a slave to addictions that we can only imagine in our worst nightmares.

Help us to remember that the old couple walking annoyingly slow through the grocery store aisles and blocking our shopping progress are savoring this moment, knowing that, based on the biopsy report she got last week, this will be the last year they go shopping together.

Heavenly Father, remind us each day that, of all the gifts you give us, the greatest gift is love. It is not enough to share love with those we hold dear. Open our hearts not just to those who are close to us but to all humanity. Help us to remember that You love even those who do not believe in You. Let us be slow to judgement and quick to forgiveness and patience and empathy and love. Amen.

I am like God, and God like me. I am as large as God, He is as small as I. He cannot above me, nor I beneath Him be.

Angelus Silesius

A nice prayer, DD. Nice to see you again Bren and Adam, and you also, MS. :)

Have faith in your dreams and someday
Your rainbow will come shining through.
No matter how your heart is grieving, if you keep believing
The dream that you wish will come true.

-- Cinderella

My conclusion is that there is no reason to believe any of the dogmas of traditional theology and, further, that there is no reason to wish that they were true. Man, in so far as he is not subject to natural forces, is free to work out his own destiny. The responsibility is his, and so is the opportunity.

Bertrand Russell,

There have been some really wonderful quotes here recently. I thank you for those that uplifted me and made me smile :)

Don't use time or words carelessly.Neither can be retrieved.--Life's Little Instruction Book

Seeds of greatness

If there were no problems, there would be no progress. Problems may be painful, frustrating and unpleasant, but they do have the power to get you focused and to keep you going.
Problems can compel you to think, and they can motivate you to get moving. They can bring out positive, valuable qualities you might otherwise never have known you had.

Problems can strengthen your faith, for sometimes there is nowhere else to turn. Problems can help you to truly understand and appreciate what's really important in life.

Some of life's greatest achievements have been the result of the most difficult and imposing problems. Problems can focus and positively direct efforts and energy that might otherwise be scattered or never even applied.

Problems can be a pain and they can also, ultimately, be a blessing. If you have your share of problems, take heart, for they carry with them the seeds of greatness.

-- Ralph Marston

Since the masses of the people are inconstant, full of unruly desires, passionate and reckless of consequence, they must be filled with fears to keep them in order. The ancients did well, therefore, to invent gods, and the belief in punishment after death.

Polybius (200 B.C.)

"A thousand slimey things lived on, and so did I. . ."

"Mad" Sam Coleridge

The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner

I see that EROS is still posting numerous things about the God he doesn't believe exists;) !

"Take care of your reputation. It's your most valuable asset."

Under bare Ben Bulben's head
In Drumcliff churchyard Yeats is laid...
On limestone quarried near the spot
By his command these words are cut:
Cast a cold eye
On life, on death.
Horseman, pass by.

William Butler Yeats

"A wingless horse heard the story one day of a horse with wings and flew away."

--Charles Henri Ford (i think)

You'll learn from them - if you want to. Just as someday, if you have something to offer, someone will learn something from you. It's a beautiful reciprocal arrangement. And it isn't education. It's history. It's poetry.

JD Salinger, The Cather in the Rye

For it is the natural tendency of the ignorant to believe what is not true. In order to overcome that tendency it is not sufficient to exhibit the true; it is also necessary to expose and denounce the false.

H. L. Mencken

My Dream:

" I had a dream the other night, that
the
world was full of peace

That people of all creeds and
colors,
let all hatred cease

That every child in their mother's womb,
would have a chance at life

That people would be healed to walk,
hear and have sight

That the news we read everyday, would
be
good and never bad

That all people would recognize, the
talents that they have

That every person had a job, and
slept
in a warm bed

That people in all parts of the world
would have food and be fed

That greed, jealousy and envy, would
be
a thing of the past

That every marriage would be a happy
one,
and would forever last

That every little girl and boy had
a
gift under the tree

That the world knew Christ and His love
and shared it endlessly

But like all things my dream ended,
and I
felt a sense of loss

So I prayed the dream would become
reality,
like Jesus and the Cross" --- Brian G.Jett

When we really understand the fact of separate realities, we will stop
spending so much time and energy trying to change the reality of
others.
-Jane Nelsen

What makes us want to control others, not just their actions but their
opinions too? Do our personal views need the validation of everyone
for us to feel adequate?

Coming to believe that we all have valid perspectives on every
experience is akin to coming to believe that there is a Higher Power in
charge of our lives. It takes willingness to suspend our assumptions and
adopt the principles of this program.

It's liberating, even exhilarating, to realize that we all see situations a
bit differently. It's like going from a black-and-white picture to
Technicolor. Our experiences are enriched as we view them with new
attitudes.

How I see my experiences today is up to me; how my friends see theirs
is up to them. My view may complement theirs, but it's mine, solely.

--A Woman's Spirit by Karen Casey

A conception not reducible to the small change of daily experience is like a currency not exchangeable for articles of consumption; it is not a symbol, but a fraud.

George Santayana
