A theory for AP holders to take advantage of Free dining

We are AP holders, so can't do the free dining deal now unless pay extra 2 day tickets which doesn't make financial sense in the end.

But here is a theory, after my current AP expire, before my next trip, I could wait for their next Free dining promotion, then upgrade the tickets purchased with the packge to an AP?
Anyone have any idea whether it's practical?

That's what we plan on doing - have 14 days of FD starting 11/20/14 with 10 day PH tickets, plan on upgrading them to AP's the first day so we can use them each of the 14 days and then for a couple of return trips in 2015.

Yes, they can. I've upgraded our package tickets to Weekday Select passes for the past two years.

We have been taking our tickets with the free dining package and upgrading to seasonal passes and annual passes for years! We usually get the theme park tickets separated from our kttw, because our annual/seasonal passes expired months after our visit. We usually go off season and buy one annual pass for parking privileges.

Ive done the math every year, and for us, its not worth it. Its always cheaper to wait for the AP rate to come out and then add the DDP. I just did it again, and to book AKL with free dining vs AKL with 35% off and DDP, its about $600 more to get free dining, after taking out $300 for tickets that could be used later.
