So, for things that you can not watch on Hulu+, what can you stream from the internet? Anything?

I would miss Cooking channel & DH would miss Spike etc...any way to see them? Or even see old shows rehashed?

They said this weekend they were streaming the play-off games. What does that mean? I could have watched them on my computer? Could I have watched them somehow on my tv?

Is there ANY way to get NFL network or ESPN without DirecTV?

Thanks.

Nope. You can stream ESPN3 if you have an Xbox 360 but even then you need to have ESPN on your cable/sat package. Cooking Channel/Spike you need cable/sat for. NBC streamed the games yesterday on the computer (computer only, you had to go to NBC's site) but they aren't streaming them today.

Okay so I think i might be missing something what is the point in streaming if you have to have the same thing on Sat/Cable anyways? I thought streaming was to save money? Am i missing something?

I think people forget is that *someone* has to pay for the costs of programming and the infrastructure required to stream programming on the internet. That is the big cost in your cable/satellite package. Yes, those companies are making a profit (they are in business to make money!) but the technology and programming aren't free and must be paid for.

Just food for thought.

If you can do without sports or specialty channels (like Cooking, Spike, Lifetime, etc.) then yes you can get rid of cable and save some money. But if you like sports or specialty channels (or watch shows unavailable on the internet) then you'll have to keep you're cable. I like shows that I can't find on the internet and I am a huge sports nut so I could never cancel mine :).

Okay got it :) Thanks for answering :) I understand that someone has to pay to keep everything going but I was missing the part where people could save money and watch shows if you have to pay to have cable still. Now i see. We did without cable for over a year and got great channels just not specialty channels. Anyways now it makes sense.

Lots of channels offer streaming video of certain programs from their website

Go to the channel's website and see which programs they offer.

Yes, you can watch the program on your computer. You can also most likely connect your laptop to your TV if it's a newer set, with an HDMI cable and watch that way.

Yes, there's Dish network and your local cable company.

Thanks.

My answers in bold.

:) out here in the boonies there is no cable company :)

I know that, and really have no problem paying for my tv. My problem is making me pay for stuff I don't want. I would be happy to pay for just my sport channels & local channels, and a couple for my DH. Maybe 10 channels in all. But no, I HAVE to pay for 150 some odd channels that I never watch. That is my issue. But since I can't get the sports stuff without DirecTV, I will probably stick with them. Even though it burns my biscuits ;)

My husband goes to firstrowsports.com, and use the HDMI plug and stream in all the sports for nothing.

The thing is most people only watch 10 or so channels. If everyone were able to pick and choose those channels would go up in price since most people would only choose 10 channels. The fact is if the cable companies would go to an a la carte pricing structure then the price difference would probably be $15 per channel (think HBO or Showtime pricing) and your net cost would still be very comparable to what you are paying now.

Unfortunately, the programming providers force cable and satellite companies to buy blocks of channels. Say, they only want ESPN, they will have to get 10 other channels in order to carry ESPN. Until the companies that provide the programming change the way they sell the programming, the cable and satellite companies are stuck having to offer everything in order to broadcast the most popular channels.

Details please, I am not very literate in this area. What's a HDMI plug? Does he stream it to computer? TV?

What sports does he watch? Does he get ESPN, just the actual games? NFL?

Even if the cable companies who supply programming didnt bundle the numbers would still be the same. Channels such as ESPN would charge big bucks such as 30 a month and cheap upstart channels that cable companies are trying to push would maybe only be a dollar or maybe only 50 cents. The net result is still the same.
