A Spookalicious October 2012 Dining Review! Update 4/8 Beer and Tangerine Cafe

Second Full Day OCtober 25 Continued
With my license debacle now behind me, I headed back to POP after getting caught in an afternoon downpour (not the first time Hurricane Sandy rears her ugly head this trip) to dry off and regroup. Caught the Magic Kingdom bus and got on the resort monorail loop to...

The Polynesian! It was 'Ohana dinner time!!! Some backstory- While I was planning this trip I had a dream that I was at 'Ohana eating dinner with some of my friends who were traveling with me. I had never been to 'Ohana dinner before and never really desired to until I had this dream. When I woke up it felt so real and I knew I had to book dinner there. So this dinner was literally a dream come true for me. But would the waking experience be as great as how I dreamed it would be? Read on to find out!

My friends had already checked up in and were gathered around the bar at the Tambu Lounge. Seeing them with Lapu Lapus in had, I had to get a drink myself only I went with a Tropical Macaw. I don't remember what was in it, but it was really pretty, tasted fruity, and gave me the buzz I needed after stressing out earlier!

Soon after we were called to be seated. We really lucked out with our table! We had a big round table with a fabulous view of the castle! Even though it had rained earlier the skies were clear and the castle was lit up for the NSSHP. Our server took out drink orders and brought out the Welcome Bread, which we ate up so fast I couldn't get a picture!

Next was the salad. I LOVED the dressing, especially with some of the peanut sauce added to it.

Here you can see a piece of Welcome Bread on the right, and the bottom of my drink to the left.

Next came the dumplings and wings. I only ate the two wings but had lots more dumplings!

I couldn't believe I was almost getting full at this point. I needed to slow down, but then came the noodles! And the broccoli!
598976_968273619981_157337080_n.jpg

Those noodles were made of awesome.

In the above picture you can see a piece of steak. We were unlucky with our steak that night. I know we could have asked for another skewer but being such a big party we didn't want to be a pain. We weren't displeased, we just ended up with more tough pieces than tender. I liked the chicken and pork but passed on the shrimp.

And here's the aftermath!

But wait, there's more! Just when you think there is no more room at the inn, they bring out the bread pudding.
66283_968273684851_662137634_n.jpg

I wasn't a bread pudding fan by any stretch of the imagination. Oh how I am singing a different tune after eating this! The carmel sauce was amazing and the texture of the pudding was actually firm and not mushy/gelatinous like others I've had (which is why I never ate bread pudding before now, I hated the texture). I wish I could have eaten more of this, but I was way past done at this point.

Overall, I know 'Ohana can be hit or miss, and I experienced mostly a hit this evening. Our servers were very nice and prompt with refills but I felt bad they kept reaching right across my friend's plate to deliver my meat off the skewer. I was also surprised how loud it was in there, between the singer and kid activities and the cranky child at the table next to us. I can certainly see where some would not like it and it was starting to get to me after a while. The food was generally very good but there was so much of it! They brought out two of each tray because we were a large party but were running out of room on the table and there was so much left over. I would definitely do this meal again, and I know I will always have dining buddies since my two friends who live in Celebration will never pass up a chance to go to 'Ohana!

Second Full Day October 25 Continued
After that delicious meal we rolled ourselves out of the Polynesian and headed home. J & T gave me a ride back to POP and even though I wanted to go to Downtown Disney I knew I had four full days ahead of me and need to to relax. With PJs on and hot tea in the refillable mug, I prepared my park bag for the next day.

While organizing my stuff, I came across this beauty I totally forgot I bought earlier!
59421_968273754711_1602375254_n.jpg

You can see it had gotten a little smushed in my bag but still tasted good. Even though I was still super full from dinner, how could I resist just a couple bites?

I saved the rest and ate it when I got home while unpacking. That was a nice way to bring a little bit of Disney back with me.

We were in Disney at the same time! I'm loving your reviews. I really wanted to try the jalapeno margarita but never got around to it.

Cool! I'm sure we passed by each other at some point! I'm a wimp when it comes to jalepenos so I'll leave that flavor to you, but the avocado was very yummy!

Loving your reviews. Can't wait to read more!
Thanks! Another update is coming right up!

Third Full Day October 26
It was up and about early again today because I had a date with destiny. A destiny who goes by the name Kona Press Pot.

Hello, my name is DancinDaisyDuck and I am a Kona Press Pot addict. It has been three years since my last Press Pot.

But first, a menu pic!
522818_968273779661_11625661_n.jpg

My breakfast reservation was for around 8:35 a.m. I think. The line for a Magic Kingdom bus was a little scary when I got out to the stop at 7:50, but I was able to get on. There wasn't early magic hours or anything at the MK but the bus was standing room only! I wonder if a lot of people booked pre-entry breakfasts at Cindy's and Crystal palace or any of the other monorail resorts.

Anyway, I was headed toward the resort monorail loop when a boat had docked at the Poly/GFlo boat launch so I headed there instead. I'd never taken a resort boat before and I LOVE boats so this was a great way to start my morning. It was windy that day (thanks, Sandy! :sad2:) so it took a couple tries to dock at the GFlo but soon enough I was walking up the Poly beach, into the lobby, and up the stairs to check in!

As I was waiting it occurred to me that I had been in that exact location less than twelve hours previously. I should have just booked one night at the Poly, it would have cut my travel time down significantly, lol!

Anyway, I was seated fairly quickly in the WAY BACK corner of the restaurant, where it was quieter but dark! I guess that's where they put all the sad solo travelers? I'd read about some not-so-magical solo dining experiences (like being ignored by the server, not getting refills, slow service, etc.) so this made me nervous. My server, Andrew, was fabulous though! He was super attentive, friendly, and didn't rush me at all. I was using a dining credit but since I was by myself he didn't know if a Press Pot could be my drink since it technically counts for two drinks. I told him I didn't care and I'd be happy to order juice instead JUST BRING ME THE PRESS POT AND NO ONE GETS HURT. Oh, did I mention I'll pay for it out of pocket?:bitelip: There was no need to go all Flynn Ryder with a frying pan on him though, because not a minute after he went to ask his manager about the dining credit thing, a glorious Press Pot was set down in front of me!
564806_968273859501_247935623_n.jpg

Cue rays of sunshine and choirs of angels! :cloud9:

Now that my thirst for 100% Kona Coffee had been sated, Andrew took my breakfast order. Normally I would have gone for the regular French Toast, but hey why not celebrate my triumphant return to Kona Cafe with something a little more dressed up and stuffed with bananas?

After incision:

What? Where's the strawberry sauce, you say? Well sadly I am allergic to strawberries so I couldn't try it. Oh, you want to know where the syrup is then? Well, I don't like syrup either so I just ate it plain. It wasn't dry at all and it was still really good! I also really enjoy the breakfast sausages at table service breakfasts so I cleaned my plate this morning!

I had never had the Tonga Toast before and I am happy I tried it but I will go back to my usual favorite of just plain French Toast. Breakfast is my favorite meal and I don't mind going fancier every once in a while, but I really do prefer my breakfast foods plain and straight forward. Overall, this breakfast at Kona didn't disappoint and I am so glad I was able to go back! This was also the very first time I had dined solo at a table service place, and while it was awkward at first I occupied the time by texting and checking out what was on tap in the Magic Kingdom using the MyDisneyExperience App. Plus, if there ever was a meal to dine solo, I would choose breakfast because it's usually quick and you don't tend to linger like you might at dinner time. My service was great, like I mentioned before, and I made sure to say a special thank you to Andrew and leave him a nice tip for going out of his way about my Press Pot. As it turns out, he made it work and I didn't have to pay for it OOP after all!

Next up: some magical treats and eats in the Magic Kingdom!

Third Full Day October 26 Continued
I got to the MK just after opening and did a couple of the character meets, did some rides, met up with other friends and then took a quick snack break for lunch at the Lunching Pad
403412_968274328561_1862280806_n.jpg

People love the sweet cream cheese pretzel but I did not. I thought this was bland and a snack credit fail. I also asked for a cup of ice water to go with it. Next time I'll try the jalepeno one at HS or AK and use my MK snack on something more epic like a cinnamon roll or even a plain ol' Mickey Bar.

Scrumptious reviews!! Highly enjoying!

Best line of the review so far: "Those noodles were made of awesome." I completely AGREE!!!!

Third Full Day October 26 Continued
I met up with some friends around 3 p.m. for a Dole Whip and a break. It was H-O-T and windy so this was perfect. I thought I had snapped a pic of this but can't find it. I had the good old fashioned pineapple flavor. In the hour or so we took to rest and finish our treats the weather had really turned from sunny and sweaty to breezy and overcast. We had been on edge all day that Sandy would rain out the Halloween Party, but luckily it never even dripped and the clouds gave the whole MK a very spooky feel!

Dinner was at 5:35 at Liberty Tree Tavern. I had dinner here five years ago when there were characters and had NOT been impressed. I remembered the turkey was dry, mac & cheese grainy and bland, stuffing thick & gooey, veggies mushy, and just completely yuck. I wanted to bypass it altogether this year :sad2:

My friends wanted to eat dinner here and I figured enough time had passed to give it another go. Plus I had such a great lunch there earlier in the week I was actually happy to return. Funnily we were seated in the same section next to the table we were at from lunch!

First up was salad!
183993_968274468281_1405169632_n.jpg

I couldn't eat this because I am allergic to the dressing (strawberries) and even though our server offered to bring out the buttermilk ranch, I declined. Roughage takes up too much space!

I scarfed down a couple rolls with butter while my friends enjoyed the salad. I was STARVING. Remember, all I'd had since breakfast was a sweet cream cheese pretzel and a Dole Whip.

My friend keeps Kosher, so she asked for the vegetarian meal in order to enjoy the ice cream that came with dessert. The veg option with dinner is the same as the lunch dish- quinoa burger with sweet potato fries.
431753_968274518181_765571682_n.jpg

T said the burger was just ok but she enjoyed the fries. She also picked at the non-meat options from the Pilgrim's Feast.

282247_968274568081_39062140_n.jpg

OMG MEAT! Here's turkey, beef brisket, pork, an apple chutney looking thing, and the stuffing is hidden underneath.

425835_968274632951_1453146676_n.jpg

Roasted root vegetables. SO YUMMY!

431716_968274692831_817061721_n.jpg

Stouffers mac and cheese. This was "meh" for me. I don't like this from my grocery freezer so there's no reason I'd like it here, even if I was at Disney.

222512_968274752711_1051751550_n.jpg

Here you can see the gravy boat, mashed potatoes and the sauteed green beans. Plus J's torso and hand, lol.

Here's my plate!
247701_968274857501_1682570140_n.jpg

I am so happy this dinner was much much much better than the stinker I had in 2007. Everything was delicious, especially the stuffing. It's my favorite part of Thanksgiving dinner and was my favorite part of this meal. I asked for another bowl of it! The only thing I didn't eat of the meat plate was the pork. The turkey was good but I liked the beef brisket the best.

We had been getting full but it was time for dessert!
14307_968274912391_1549273346_n.jpg

This is the new-ish dessert. It's a white cake the size and shape of a hockey puck with apples and Craisins with ice cream on top. It was alright, but not great. I wish the cake had been warmed up. It doesn't even come close to how good the Ooey Gooey Toffee Cake is here at lunch.

Overall, I was VERY happy with dinner here at LTT but would have to give the edge to lunch. I liked the a la carte offerings and dessert choices better. This is probably one of the better restaurants in the MK, the only two I haven't tried are Crystal Palace and Be Our Guest. If I am with a group and they want to get dinner here in the future, I will gladly go. However, I will definitely do lunch once every trip if I can!

This is what is holding me back from making a dinner ADR. That dessert just does not look good at all. The fact that it is not even served warm makes it worse. Why can they not have the Ooey Gooey Toffee Cake at dinner?

That meat platter is right up my alley though:thumbsup2

We had the Johnny Appleseed Cake at lunch back in August and actually preferred it to the Ooey-Gooey Toffee Cake. That was the unanimous opinion of 4 of us at the table, so maybe we just got a bad batch of the toffee cake? I believe it was served warm. Anyway, I wouldn't let the dessert deter you from dinner. You might really like it, as we did!

I think they need something special to keep the lunch crowd coming back!

I didn't mean to impress that this dessert was bad. It actually tasted fine but I preferred the Toffee Cake. Maybe our dessert had been sitting out and had been warm at some point before our server brought it to us.

I agree with you though that the rest of the meal fully makes up for whatever dessert may be lacking. Enjoy it all and ask for extra ice cream if the cake doesn't do it for you. You can always get a Dole Whip or something sweet at Main Street Bakery later
:thumbsup2

popcorn:: chiming in.
Thanks for joining in!

Third Full Day October 26 Continued
After playing around at MNSSHP we took a break and grabbed a couple spots in the Rose Garden to wait for Hallowishes. I was craving ice cream and went into the Plaza Ice Cream Parlor for a cone (or so I thought). I places my order for one scoop of mint chocolate chip and a bottle of water and paid. The water was delivered quickly but I had to wait and wait and wait for my ice cream. There was maybe two people ahead in line and some families behind me when I walked in. By the time my ice cream was finally delivered, I was the only one left in the place. And here's what it looked like:
196154_968275446321_480972774_n.jpg

I see ice cream, I see a cone, but who ordered the dish? As you can see, it was also very melted and added with the humidity that evening this was messier than I could have anticipated. It was awkward trying to eat it with both hands and walk back to the Rose Garden through the crowds (which is why I ordered a cone) and most of this ended up running down my hands in a green, streaky, sticky mess. I tossed it in the first garbage can I saw. :sad2:

Fourth Full Day October 27
It was back to EPCOT today! I had hoped to tackle more of Food & Wine Fest but am so glad I got all my must-do stops done earlier in the week. This is because EPCOT during F&WF on a Saturday is TORTURE. But why was I there if I knew this? I was in WDW for a meet up of members from another board and our big meet was this day in EPCOT. We had a morning gathering and private breakfast in one of the function rooms at the Living Seas, as well as a special meet with Mickey! Then we broke into smaller groups throughout the day and had smaller meets around EPCOT. Later that night we regrouped in Norway for a cocktail hour and another meet with a special guest. Was it annoying for EPCOT to be so crowded? Absolutely. Was it worth it to hang out with great people and have unique experiences throughout the day. Of Course! And I'll gladly do it again on our next meet.

So, back to food. I didn't take any pictures of breakfast, but it was your standard eggs, tater-tots, bacon, fruit, and coffee.

My next stop was at the Rose and Crown for my favorite Brit beverage, Strongbow!
552268_968275825561_41568523_n.jpg

So crisp, not too sweet, and very refreshing. I had a little while to kill before my noon lunch ADR at Chef's, so I wandered as far as Italy and then turned around.

Thanks for sharing the pic and info on Strongbow, I have never tried it but will next time!

Fourth Full Day October 27 Continued
I love French food and was very excited to eat at Chefs de France. My usual EPCOT table service of choice is Coral Reef, but recent menu changes there inspired me to consider other options. I shared this meal with my buddy, M.

We were seated very fast after checking in and were lead all the way toward the back of the restaurant by the dessert prep area. We had a nice view out of the windows though! Our server was named Sebastian and he was very, well, French. This added to the overall experience and I didn't mind one bit.

M and I ordered a bottle of Pinot Noir to split and both went with the Fixed Price menu options.

French Onion Soup
306573_968276134941_1820925705_n.jpg

Yeah! This was so good. The cheese was nice and bubbly, the broth had a lot of flavor, there were tons of onions on the bottom and it wasn't salty. M also had this soup and enjoyed it.

The little chef stopped by between our first and second course. I only had my iPhone with me and a lot of direct sunlight through the windows made for some poor backlit photos of Remy.
293789_968276204801_1369353654_n.jpg

223696_968276354501_1135575868_n.jpg

But he was so cute!

Our main courses arrived then. We both went with the Quiche Lorraine that came with a mixed greens salad with a balsamic dressing.
247692_968276399411_1861788182_n.jpg

The top of mine got a little more well done in the oven than I like, but it didn't taste burned at all. Everything was delicious and I cleaned my plate!

Dessert time. Although there were lots of good choices I had to go with my all time favorite French dessert...
523060_968276454301_163868215_n.jpg

Profiteroles! The pastry was light and hollow on the inside to make room for that luscious ice cream and the chocolate sauce was to die for! M ordered the sorbet, which was three different flavors served with some gorgeous fresh fruit and mint. We would have licked our plates if it wasn't extremely un-French to do so.

Overall, Chefs has quickly taken over Coral Reef as my number one spot in EPCOT for table service. The restaurant is so pretty and really transports me to a bistro in Paris. The food was great and I am looking forward to trying new dishes on my next visit (can't wait to tackle the cheese plate!), plus the addition of Remy at lunch is so nice.

Service was good for me. Remember, I'm not expecting Downton Abbey levels of service here. Although I have to say, Sebastian lived up to his French-iness. He was a bit grumpy and had a tendency to hover while M and I took a more leisurely pace to our meal than probably he wanted. But he was really good at keeping my wine glass full so what more could a girl ask for?

Fourth Full Day October 27 Continued!
After lunch it was very crowded over in the UK/Canada/France area so I migrated over to Japan with some friends to walk around, browse the shops and grab one of these!

29406_968276529151_1852367849_n.jpg

These were brand new at the time, a Frozen Kirin. Kirin is a really good beer to begin with but these beauties have frozen foam on top to keep it nice and cold. My friends and I lovingly nicknamed this icecream beer.

A little while later it was dinner time! I met up with J again and we went to our favorite counter service in all of EPCOT, Tangerine Cafe. I had the lamb platter.
58826_968276663881_556555307_n.jpg

Everything was fresh and delicious. The menus still say the platters are served with Moroccan bread which in other pictures looks like a baguette shape, but I got a pita instead.

As much as I love the entrees at Tangerine, the dessert is really lacking. There's no choice other than baklava, and this wasn't that great.
546846_968276743721_1542130022_n.jpg

I only took a few bites and threw it out with the remainder of my platter.

I love TC because of the experience I have sitting in the courtyard of a beautiful pavilion, listening to the sounds of Mo'Rockin' and eating the delicious food that you can't find at other counter services. Since the majority of people shy away from more exotic cuisine (but TC is by no means out there and exotic from my pov) there's rarely a line at the counter and we found an empty table despite it being an extremely crowded Saturday night during Food and Wine Fest.

We spent the rest of the evening hanging out around World Showcase but didn't stick around for IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth because we had a date with dueling pianos at Jellyrolls! I don't have any pictures of JR's, but I'd encourage anyone over 21 to go if they can. It's a very fun time!
