A Split Stay POP and AKL Solo Trip Report (10/21-10/31) w/ lots of PICS! ***New 3/13

We didn't go on Ripsaw as last year we went in Dec which (to me) was cold so didn't want to get soaked, but we are so gonna try it out next year :)

Love the AKL pics, thats one cheeky Giraffe following the CM around for more food :)

Your Mickey Tiki God pin sounds v cool, you must post a piccie :)
You definitely need to try Ripsaw, but you WILL get soaked!

IOA sounds fun, but nothing can compare to getting back on Disney property!

Good thing you didn't end that sentence after the word "around"!!! :rotfl2:
:lmao:

I'm all caught up and sad that there isn't more yet! Great trip report! A solo trip? I think I could really love that!
:welcome:

After spending a sufficient amount of time watching the animals I decided to head to Epcot. I chose to take the bus since I was going to be doing some drinking at the F&W Booths. I regret that decision now (taking the bus that is) because it took nearly 40 minutes for an Epcot bus to arrive. Ack!

The bus ended up being packed and so I had to stand the whole way, but the company was pretty good. There was a boy, about 9 or 10, from Arkansas who was the boy version of Chatty Cathy. He talked to anybody that would listen and made pretty good conversation! He was wearing a Razorback shirt and was impressed that I knew what it was :rotfl:

I started on the Canada side of World Showcase this time around with my first stop being Puerto Rico for a drink, then to Athens for a snack. I continued with stops at the Cork, Ireland booth and the Paris booth. I stopped to listen to Mo Rockin' and then had a snack at the Marrakesh booth.

When I got to Japan, Mikyuki was in the middle of a show. I was able to get up pretty close to the rope (without trampling small children) and saw her make two unicorns - one pink and one purple, an octopus and a panda.

While it was really cool to watch her work, her constant narration got kind of annoying. I ended up leaving before she was through because I couldn't take it anymore! Even the people around me were making comments, so I know it wasn't just me. I have a very low annoyance tolerance :rotfl:

Boyz II Men was playing at the American Gardens Theater that night. One note about the theater - I had NO idea the theater was there. I'm not sure what it looks like when it's not being used for shows, but I really don't remember ever seeing it before. Am I blind? Does it just kind of blend in when it's not concert time? I couldn't figure out for the life of me where the theater was before my trip, I thought maybe it was tucked in the back behind the American Adventure building and I just never noticed there was a path back there or something - there's not by the way.

Anyway...I didn't know that I'd be staying for the whole show so I grabbed a bench near back, it was pretty crowded already. Boyz II Men came on and started singing and all of a sudden I was 11 again and singing my heart out to every song!

I remembered the words to almost all of the songs, and I know that I haven't gone out of my way to listen to any of them in nearly 15 years! I had a great time and was glad that I took the time to stop and listen.

After the concert I thought it was about time to leave so I started towards Mexico, stopping along the way to ride Maelstrom and the Grand Fiesta Tour. I did make sure to get dessert on my way out of World Showcase at the Champagne and Dessert booth!

It's not a trip to Epcot without a ride on Spaceship Earth. I think this night there may have even been a little bit of a line! For some reason on this trip I ended up in cars with other people a few times. I didn't really like that. This is such a fast loading, high capacity ride. I didn't see the need to fill the cars the way they did. I didn't like having someone behind me in the car - I like to lay back and relax and talk along with the narration which I obviously didn't do with other people right behind me.

0910260219.jpg

I said goodnight to Epcot and started towards the buses hoping the bus back would come much quicker than the bus that brought me there. Thankfully it did and it was a short ride back to AKL where I crashed pretty hard and had a good night sleep!

What was so annoying about her narration? I've never seen that particular show before. I would have hate being put with other people on Spaceship Earth too. Especially when there are TONS of cars and it's not that busy. Looks like you had a great evening at Epcot :goodvibes

Will defo try Ripsaw next year, I promise :)

V cool you got to see Boyz II Men perform :) Love End of the Road :)

What a wonderful evening at Epcot!

She just talks non stop and has a kind of annoying sing songy voice. Youtube her and you'll see what I'm talking about.

They did End of the Road last and everybody was singing, it was fun!

I took my time getting ready this morning since the day before I had arrived at the park WAY too early. I arrived much later this time, but ironically I got a better parking spot! US and IOA share a parking garage and then you walk through a shopping/restaurant part until you split off to go straight to IOA or right to US.

When I got to the gates, people were already in the park. There were people lined up at the non existent rope ready to run to Rip, Ride, Rockit - and I do mean run, they allow running at Universal! There are two attractions right as you enter, Shrek 4-D and Jimmy Neutron. Even though it was before 9am, people were already entering the queues for these shows. I guess they tend to get pretty crowded as the day goes on because they are literally the first things you see as you enter the park.

I had planned to go straight for Rip, Ride, Rockit but we were told that it was closed! They did mention that it would open later in the day though. Instead, I ran to the Mummy. After throwing my stuff in a locker I got in line and made it on the first car with only 3 other people. Wow! I really, really liked this. It's part dark ride and part coaster and a lot of fun.

The park was not crowded today, although a little more crowded than it had been the day before. There couldn't have been more than 500 people or so who were there at opening.

After that I went to the Simpsons Ride.

Even though I walked straight through the queue and there was nobody else waiting ahead of me, it was still a good long time before I got on the ride. They ended up filling the ride vehicle I was in, but there is a long wait to get into a preshow and then the preshow is really long too - ugh!! The ride was good though, and pretty long at that. I wasn't the set up I was expecting, I thought there would be more people in the car, but it only sat 8 people. I assume there are multiple cars that go at the same time because otherwise this would be a very low capacity ride.

Men in Black was next.

d52b1980.jpg

There was no line so I was surprised when the Team Member at the queue entrance told me to get in the Single Rider Line. But I'm glad she did because it saved me from having to sit through the preshow. I ended up being the only person in my car. I enjoyed this one - I'm a big fan of Buzz Lightyear and Toy Story Mania and this lived up to the hype. It's much more interactive than Buzz and since it was my first time riding I was less worried about getting a really good score. I think I still like Toy Story Mania better though.

I walked over to see if ET was open, but it didn't open up until later in the day. I walked back towards the entrance and saw that Rip Ride Rockit was open so I got in line. The line went pretty quick since the park wasn't crowded, but I could see how this ride could back up very easily.

I hadn't read up too much about this ride, only that it was interactive in that you could pick the song that you listened to while you rode. I wish I had read about it though so I would have known ahead of time that there is no over the shoulder harness!! The only thing keeping you in is a pretty heavy lap bar that just about covers your thighs. I thought for sure I would fall out. My first ride was pretty nerve wracking since I was basically holding on for dear life the whole time! I picked Insane in the Membrane by Cypress Hill as my song though and I can't not sing along to that one :thumbsup2

Here's a picture of the first "hill" climb. I thought for sure I would fall right out.

7fce7326.jpg

Since I survived the first ride, I got right back on to see if I could live through two rides - good news, I did! This time I chose Intergalactic by the Beastie Boys for my song - another one you can't help but sing along too! During the ride they video tape you and make a music video of you riding. I checked mine out afterward and it was hilarious. I would never waste the money to buy it though, too expensive!

f9a08962.jpg

Since I was in the area, I figured I'd do Jimmy Neutron and Shrek 4D. Both were OK. I do like the simulator type rides with all the movement. It seemed like just about every show had movement involved - Disney could take some tips on this one, it really makes the show fun. Even at Shrek the seats move up and down at various times to add to the 3D/4D effects.

Up next, more Universal!

The Mummy ride is awesome, love the part where you go through flames, or it flames before you go through (can't really remember), hate the scarab beetle part though, blergh!!

How cool that you walked right on to the Simpsons. Rip Ride Rocket (or whatever way it goes) looks awesome :)

Love the IOA and Universal pics I've never been. Waiting for more.
You should go, it's fun!

The Mummy was really awesome...maybe Disney can steal that one haha

Twister was next on my list of things to do. I wasn't entirely sure what this attraction was, but I had heard good things about it. It's obviously based on the Twister movie which I enjoyed, so I headed in. It's a TON of preshow with Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt talking both about the movie and about real tornadoes. Finally you get into the show area and they start the twister with winds blowing, fire, rain, it's pretty awesome.

I wanted to also do Disaster, but the wait was something like 50 minutes - NO THANKS! Instead, I headed to Amityville for some lunch at the Midway Grill.

I sat where I could see Jaws and the line didn't look too about - about 15 minutes - so I got in the queue after I finished eating. This is one of the things that I remember from Universal Studios Hollywood when we went there in the early 90's. It was a cute ride, but yet another one where you get sprayed by water! The "tour guide" was good at this job, so I think that made it fun.

There was an Animal Actors show at 12:45 During the opening, lots of animals run around the stage. The last animal that comes is a cat. He's supposed to run up to the top of the set and hit a lever on the sign. The poor kitty just couldn't figure out what he was supposed to be hitting. He knew that he was looking for something, but couldn't seem to find it. Finally, a trainer came out and helped him, but then he didn't want to go backstage again!

There were some cool demonstrations throughout the show, but it was mostly birds and dogs.

0a61e0ec.jpg

This bird showed everybody how he flies in front of a blue screen. They turned a fan on and it looked like he was soaring through the air when it fact he was pretty much staying in place.

42baaf8d.jpg

One of the last animals brought out was a monkey who of course stole the show - very cute.

779e615f.jpg

It was a cute show but I wish it would have been longer or had more animals/different content. It's worth the time though if you there.

ET was open, so I got in line there. It was a pretty quick queue. They ask you your name as you are getting ready to board and then give you a license which the loading Team Member scans before you get on. At the end of the ride, ET says your name...it's a very cute twist.

I wanted to do Terminator but the next show wasn't until 2:45 and it was only 1:30. Instead, I walked around and took photos. I got to the Mummy and the single rider line was open with no wait so I hopped in and took another ride - loved it again!

This guy was waiting outside the Mummy scaring people.

This thing must be used for some nighttime fireworks show?

b35f6e0b.jpg

I continued clockwise around the park with my picture taking stopping to ride MIB twice using the single rider line. This time I got to ride with other people which made it more fun. You can get higher scores I think if you are playing as a team.

My attraction of the day was Terminator 2 - 3D. Another very long preshow and the preshow room was packed. It's a combination of a live action show and a movie. They do a good job with it and don't make it seem too fake. The actors don't actually talk, it's the real actors from Terminator (Edward Furlong, Arnold, etc.) doing the voices and the actors just mouth the words and do the movements.

After Terminator I decided it was time to go. It was about 3:15 and I had done everything I wanted to do. I was tired and the walk back to the car felt like an eternity. All in all I had a good day at Universal although I don't know that I'll be rushing back anytime soon. It's just not big enough for 1 full day for each park, but it's a little too big for 2 days to be worth the money. But if I ever have the chance at free tickets again, I probably will use them.

Boyz II Men was playing at the American Gardens Theater that night.

Wow, what a blast from the past! I would have liked to hear them!

I really enjoyed your review of Universal. I don't know that I would ever take the time to go over there, so it was nice to hear about it.

Aww poor kitty forgetting his cue.

I didn't think much of Jaws either, but had to go on it as its a must for a first timer to Universal.

I just booked my May trip!! I was actually booked at All Star Movies, which I had done back in October, but with the news deals that were released today, I was able to get POFQ for 5 nights for a really good price! I'm excited to be staying at POFQ again, I really enjoyed it when I stayed there in 2007. I guess it's time for a new ticker!

If you have the chance, I'd say do it, but don't go out of your way to get there. I did enjoy it.

enjoying your report, can't wait for more!
Thanks - coming right up!

He was adorable, reminded me of one of my cats who is always getting into things.

Jaws is definitely a must do at Universal even though it's kind of lame. It would be like going to the Magic Kingdom and never riding It's a Small World!

Once I arrived back at AKL, my first stop, as always, was the balcony. Not too many guys were out when I was out there, so I went back inside, changed and decided to visit the arcade.

I have a certain fondness for arcades as I spent a lot of time in them as a kid. This one doesn't have tickets to win or anything, but it's fun anyway! I got myself a game card with about $10 on it and spent an hour or so playing games. I mostly played the POTC Pinball game, but also tried my hand at a few others. I even won a stupid little sticky thing from one of the prize games - go me!

After my money ran out, I went to Mara for Zebra Domes and then back up to my balcony. This time, more animals were out and they were very active.

Around dusk, I noticed one of the Roan Antelope getting a little feisty. He chased a pack of Zebra all around the savanna, but I think he had his eye on one in particular. It was really fun to watch, especially since I knew that it wouldn't end up with anybody getting eaten or anything!

I had a great dinner at Jiko that night where I tried Ostrich for the very first time - yum!

After dinner I spent more time outside looking at the animals. There were 4 zebra and 2 Roan antelope. One of the zebra was laying down and the other 3 were surrounding it. One of the antelope was also lying down on his side. I thought the worst! I wondered if they had been chasing each other again and someone had gotten hurt. After I watched them for about 20 minutes, they started moving, thank goodness!!

All in all it was a great night. A great dinner then a 1 minute walk back to my room to see the animals - I'm an AKL addict!!

I don't know why, maybe it was the fact that I was suffering from a bad cold, maybe it was because I was away for my bed for too many days, but I slept HORRIBLY this night. I tossed and turned and eventually woke up at 4:15 and saw I had a message - which wasn't there when I went to bed the night before. It was the front desk telling me that security had alerted them that my window was open in my rental car. Argh. The woman at the desk mentioned that they were expecting rain, so I got a sweatshirt and some shoes on and headed out to the parking lot. Luckily, I had gotten a pretty good parking spot the day before so it was a quick trip. The lobby was eerily quiet but there were a few CMs working, doing painting and such, and even a couple guests. It looked as if they had maybe just arrived at the resort?

I slept a little better once my car issues were taken care of and eventually got out of bed around 8am. That's sleeping in for Disney! I decided on Room Service for breakfast and it arrived about 20 minutes after ordering.

After breakfast I took my time getting ready. I was going to DHS for the morning and decided that I'd take the bus instead of driving. I'd be going to Animal Kingdom in the afternoon, so I figured it would just as quick to take the bus this day - especially coming back from the park since AKL is a 3 minute bus ride from AK.

I got into DHS at about 10:30 - definitely a laid back kind of day! To add to the laid backness, I made my first stop the Backlot Tour. I hadn't gotten a chance to do this tour in the last couple trips, so I wanted to make sure I saw it at least once.

I've always wanted to be the person that got soaked in the beginning

0910280736.jpg

They were doing a rehearsal for Lights, Motor, Action as we were driving by - it was neat to see them running basically the full show but with an empty stadium.

0910280753.jpg

Uh - oh, there's a fire, that can't be good

0910280758.jpg

Here comes the water to put it out!

0910280757.jpg

0910280759.jpg

They already had all the Osborne Lights up and ready to be turned on.

0910280764.jpg

After the Backlot Tour I decided to head over to the Animation Academy - my new favorite place in DHS. On the way over, I saw Mike and Sully out giving autographs. I didn't stop to see them, just slowed down for a picture.

0910280768.jpg

I ended up doing the Animation Academy twice. I might have gone a third time, but the CM doing the class was kind of creepy. Disney really should be more conscious about the creepy factor people have when they are hiring. I saw some really scary CMs on this trip. They all seemed nice enough, but I wouldn't want to be alone in a room with them if you know what I mean!

We drew Donald Duck first, then Winnie the Pooh.

0910280769.jpg

The creepy CM seemed to have an unnatural obsession with Pooh and often called him "My Poohy Bear"...ick

0910280770.jpg

I made my last stop Voyage of the Little Mermaid. I didn't get a chance to see this one last year either.

After the show, I made my way to the Animal Kingdom bus stop.

:banana::cheer2::cheer2: That's so exciting!!!! I loved POFQ when I was there last year. Hope it's as good to you as it was to me. If you want to be close to the main building, request building 4 or 5 :thumbsup2

Glad nothing went missing with the window being down. It's nice to know Disney keeps an eye out for these things. Perhaps your subconscious was telling you something was wrong....

So that's where they hide the Epcot topiaries from the Flower and Garden festival! Actually Bambi and Thumper look ready to go back out on display. The festival is coming up in a few months!!!! :yay:

The creepy CM seemed to have an unnatural obsession with Pooh and often called him "My Poohy Bear"...ick

Whoa. That is a bit creepy.....

I loved your relaxed end to Day 7. Seems like the animals put on quite the show for you!
