A Split Stay POP and AKL Solo Trip Report (10/21-10/31) w/ lots of PICS! ***New 3/13

I thought pineapples grew from trees too. Cool fern that retracted to protect itself. We didn't make it to Innoventions last time so we'll do it first thing this year. Enjoying your trip and waiting for more.
Sum of All Thrills is great - you have to be sure to try it

Great update, The Great Piggy Bank Adventure looks like fun, good job on saving lots for your retirement :thumbsup2
Yay me! :rotfl:

I can see her hands going a mile a minute here! :lmao: The tour sounds really interesting!
It was - I'm glad I took the time to do it.

Hey, are you planning another trip anytime soon?
I'm going the first week of May :banana:

I was feeling really run down at this point in my trip, I had a bad cold and it was very hot out. A nap was in order.

When I arrived back at AKL, there were a ton of Halloween pumpkins and they were having a competition with various categories like scariest, best African theme, funniest, etc.

The voting was open the next day so I made a mental note to make sure and cast my vote for my favorites.

I went back to my room and took a very nice, very long nap. I thought about going to DTD after waking up, but decided to just run down to Mara for some dinner and then hang out in the room the rest of the night. It was a much needed break from my go go go pace.

You sure write a good trip report. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading it. Can't wait to read more.

Wow, awesome looking Pumpkins, wonder who won :)

Thank you!

You'll have to wait and see (if I remembered to take pictures - I think I did!)

Those pumpkins are so cool! I hope the nap and night in helped you feel better.

Denise
Naps are always a good thing.

Very thorough trip report, i like it!
Thanks!

Taking a two hour nap seemed like a good idea at the time, but it resulted in a fairly sleepless night. That just meant staying in bed longer - until around 8am. I woke up not nearly as stuffy as I was the day before, and it the heat wasn't going to be as unbearable so I deemed it a good day with hope that I'd last through the evening.

I got ready quickly and was out the door. I skipped breakfast because I planned on trying out the Main St. Bakery. On my way through the lobby I stopped and voted for my favorite pumpkins in the AKL pumpkin contest. It was an MK morning for me so I took the bus rather than driving. I didn't want to deal with the whole TTC piece of it.

I had just missed a bus so I was afraid of how long the wait would be for the next one. Luckily, it arrived very soon after I got to the bus stop and it was virtually empty. So it was a nice, semi private ride to the Magic Kingdom.

I didn't make rope drop and wasn't expecting to - this was the first trip where I didn't make any MK rope drops! I'll have to make up for that in May. It didn't really matter that I missed rope drop though since I was headed to the Main St. Bakery. There was bit of a line, but nothing too crazy. There are so many options here, but I ended up just having a Cheese Danish and some OJ. For some reason I had really been in a Cheese Danish mood the last few days. I really liked sitting at the tables and looking out on Main St. There was lots of action going on, but I was able to enjoy the activities while still having a fairly relaxing breakfast.

After breakfast, I slowly made my way to Fantasyland. I stopped at the hub for some photos.

0910300953.jpg

I have yet to ride one of the Main St. Vehicles, but it's on my list for the future. I just never seem to be able to time it correctly.

Once in Fantasyland, I started with Peter Pan. The line was still short, only about 5 minutes. I love doing Fantasyland first thing in the morning when it is very quiet. I walked by Peter Pan not a half an hour later and the line was already at 20 minutes. After PP, I did IASW. This was a walk-on as always and I almost had a boat to myself. Someday I'd like to be able to have a boat all to myself and no boats in front or behind me so I can take lots of flash photos. It hasn't happened yet, but I have come close a few times.

Liberty Square and Haunted Mansion were next on my list. Again, this was a walk-on. I walked right into a stretching room and was first in a doombuggy. Knowing the trick about where to stand makes a HUGE difference. Every time I rode HM on this trip I was first on the doombuggy and had about a 5 car gap between me and the next group. The audio wasn't working in my buggy, but I didn't care. I could hear the audio from other cars and didn't miss out all that much.

0910300956.jpg

Splash Mountain was my next stop. It had a very short wait, practically a walk-on. Everything started out just fine, I was in the back row of a full log. Then we started stopping - a lot. It seemed like in every room the announcement would come on that they were having technical difficulties. Each time they seemed to be resolved until we got to the outside portion of the ride that is right after the big drop. All the boats stopped at this point and they had people coming out to check on us. The announcements were saying that the ride was being reset and the CM by us said it wouldn't be much longer.

This lizard was watching us sit in the baking sun.

0910300957.jpg

We did end up getting started again, but it didn't last very long. In the last room we stopped again. And this time we weren't going anywhere.

I took this picture to remember exactly where we got stuck

0910300958.jpg

CMs started coming around to evacuate us, only problem was that we were not near a place that we could safely evacuate! We were too far ahead of the walkway that we could have used to step out on. Apparently the CMs had a plan though and threw a rope to me since I was in the back seat. I missed the rope a few times, it's hard to turn and catch something when you are in those tiny seats. Eventually I got it and was instructed to hook it to the back of the log. Once the rope was latched on, they pulled us to a section where we were all able to safely step out. It was cool to be standing up basically in the scenery and looking at the empty logs in the water.

I took this photo and got yelled at :scared1: They told me that I'd get in trouble for taking it, but I couldn't understand why - I wasn't taking a photo of any secrets - just the empty boat. I didn't end up getting in trouble by the way.

0910300959.jpg

They walked us backstage and handed everyone a re-entry pass good for ANY ride in the MK that day - pretty cool. I had gotten a re-entry pass for Space Mountain a couple trips ago when the ride had to be reset, but it was only good for Space Mountain. I liked that this one was for anything I wanted - even rides with no FastPass line.

We got back into Frontierland and I saw a boat that was stuck in a spot where they really couldn't evacuate or even pull the boat to a safe place. The poor people were sitting directly in the sun and looked like they'd be there for a while. The CMs were handing out bottled waters which I thought was nice, but then I was thinking that I probably wouldn't drink it because I'd have to pee!!

I walked over to Pirates where the posted wait time was 15 minutes - I didn't believe it since there is never a line, but wouldn't you know - there WAS a 15 minute line. I have never been in a line at Pirates...it was crazy. They must have been having issues with the ride or something because it made no sense. Needless to say my boat was pretty full. The people in the front didn't get the no flash photography message which was a little bit annoying.

Tomorrowland was my next stop, but I took a short break to have some lunch at Casey's first. I ate right a lunch time so there wasn't a table available and I ended up sharing with someone. They didn't seem to mind too much.

Once I got to Tomorrowland I got a FP for Buzz and took a ride on the TTA. After the TTA I used me re-entry pass for Buzz.

0910300961.jpg

I was pretty happy with my score!

0910300962.jpg

I guess it was good because I was so serious about my job of saving the planet for the evil Emperor Zurg.

0910300965.jpg

I still had a FP for Buzz to use, but it wasn't time yet so I did one more run on the TTA. My Buzz FP was ready so I went and used it, not as good of a score this time around, but still one of my favorite attractions.

I had a demo to get to at Epcot at 2:45 and it was nearly 2:00 when I left MK, I was cutting it pretty close.

Yes you will!

0910300966.jpg

I hotfooted it to the monorail where luckily I found one waiting for me...phew!

Not a bad start to the day. I love an empty Fantasyland too early morning, its great to have your pick of what you want to ride before it gets super busy isn't it :)

Bummber about getting stuck on SM, even bigger bummer for those poor people who couldn't be evacuated :(

Those poor riders who got stuck in the sun--at least you got out! I hope they didn't have to sit there too long.

Can't wait to hear about your demo!

Denise

Just found your report yesterday and I'm all caught up this morning :)

It must be lovely getting to do your own thing ALL day long, I would love to do a solo trip, maybe one day!

Can't wait for the next installment.... no pressure ;)

It was kinda cool getting stuck but yeah, it really sucked for those that were in the sun and couldn't move!

I didn't go back again to check, but hopefully it wasn't very long.

New installment coming right up!

I had great luck with the monorails and had one waiting for me at each station on the way to Epcot. I decided that even though it's a nice view, I really don't like the looooong ride through the park before pulling into the station.

I broke my own Demo rule on this day and didn't even get to the Festival Welcome center until 15 minutes before it started! For a big star like Andrew Zimmern, I knew this would be a problem. And it was...I was really far back in line, ugh! I didn't think there was a chance in h-e-double hockey sticks that I'd get a good seat. But, that's where being solo comes as an advantage - I got a table right up front!! There was one open seat and the front and center table and it was all mine!

Pam Smith came out and introduced the Wine lady whose name I cannot remember, but she was pretty outgoing.

0910300971.jpg

She had a Rosa Regale paired with Andrew's dish which as a non-wine drinker surprised me. She went on to explain that when you have a spicy dish, a sweet wine can go really well with it. I liked the taste of Rosa Regale that I had, but I think I'm just not quite a wine drinker yet.

0910300970.jpg

Once we were done with all the wine nonsense, Pam introduced Andrew. He came out, sans Sous chef, and was ready to cook. He didn't sit and talk and tell stories like the other chefs did, instead he got right to cooking and talked as he did that.

0910300969.jpg

He did a really good job of explaining everything that he was doing. He wasn't using too many ingredients that were uncommon, but the ones that he did - like lemon grass - he made sure to explain how to prepare it.

Andrew made a Sweet and Sour Bangkok Style Quail with Red Chiles. I'd never had quail before, so I was looking forward to trying it. One thing I really took away from the demo was that the sauce for the quail was something that could be used with all kinds of proteins. I'd like to try it with shrimp sometime, not that I ever cook at home!

0910300976.jpg

0910300978.jpg

0910300979.jpg

0910300985.jpg

About 30 minutes into the demo we were served the Quail dish.

0910300981.jpg

Wow! It was so good. Spicy, but not overly hot and the Quail was really well cooked and crisp on the outside. It also came with a clump of white rice which just so happens to be on my list of favorite foods :thumbsup2

I pretty much inhaled it, and tried to have some with the wine, but man, I really like it. I usually avoid spice because it gives me heartburn, but I think this was done really well and I didn't have that issue.

Andrew took some questions from the audience, typical things that you would expect him to be asked - what was the worst thing you ever ate, is there anything you wouldn't eat, etc. He was a good sport about answering since I'm sure he gets these types of questions all the time.

He was doing a book signing afterwards, but I decided that I would get my book signing needs taken care of the next day.

All in all it was very enjoyable, and the food wasn't as weird as I thought it would be!

I've never been stuck on a ride long enough that they had to walk us out. I think it would be neat as long as I had alot of time (not neat out in the hot sun) I can't believe they yelled at you for taking a picture of the empty log.
Great luck getting a table up front! I can't wait to see what happens next!

It was my first time ever getting *that* stuck. Not something I'd like to repeat frequently, but it was cool.

With the demo over, I made my way to World Showcase. I planned to start on the Mexico side this time around since that was closer to where I was starting from. I picked up a Kim Possible Fastpass on my way into Mexico, it was for 4:15 in Italy.

My first stop was Brazil for a drink, then Australia for a dessert. I got to Italy to use my Kim Possibly FastPass and had a hard time finding the place. It's not really in the heart of Italy so I wasn't looking in the same place. By the time I found it I decided that I really didn't want to be doing Kim Possible after all. I trashed the pass and moved on.

The Illuminations Globe was out and ready for the evening activities

0910300989.jpg

I never did see Illuminations this trip, but that's okay since I'm not really a big fireworks watcher anyway. In fact, I never saw ANY fireworks in 11 days :rotfl:

I got a quick bite in America, and then some sushi in Japan.

I took my obligatory Japan picture

0910300991.jpg

It didn't come out as well as it has in the past because World Showcase was busy.

I did some shopping in Japan where I picked up some candy and a few other things (I'll do one big "What I Bought" post at the end of this TR).

My walk around WS continued

0910300993.jpg

I stopped at the Rose & Crown Pub for a drink :drinking1 and some Ice Cream at the Edy's Flavorhood stand.

It was a relaxing stroll around World Showcase, something I need to do more of on future trips. I never take the time to just people watch and window shop.

I finished my time at Epcot with a ride on Spaceship Earth, of course :lmao:

0910300999.jpg

I bused it back to AKL where I experienced people getting confused by the buses stopping Kidani first yet again. Once at Jambo house I ran back to my room and went to the balcony to see who was out there

0910301005.jpg

0910301004.jpg

Everybody was having a pretty quiet day, eating and napping. I could have used a nap too! Instead, I dropped my stuff and grabbed my package pick up slip and went down to Zawadi marketplace to pick up all my stuff. While I was there I ended buying a few Vinylmation figures which I have really grown to love - I have a collection of 12 or so now. While I was checking out the girl helping me asked, "Do you collect these?" and I responded, "I guess I do now!"

I had a few more things I wanted to get at Downtown Disney and I decided I would drive instead of taking the bus. Big mistake! It was PACKED. I guess I should have known that it would busy seeing as it was the day before Halloween. Everybody and their brother was there trick or treating. I had to park wayyyy over on the West Side and walk to the Marketplace...ugh.

I got my few things that I wanted and trucked it back to my car and was back at AKL by 8pm. I needed some dessert so I grabbed a couple snacks from the Mara before getting ready for my last day. Lots of packing and cleaning up to be done, and I wasn't quite ready to go yet.

Wow I can't believe you made it the whole trip without seeing any fireworks, seems like you would have at least seen some by accident:laughing:
I can't wait to see what you bought!

I bought too much haha

Looks like a pretty decent sized portion! Sounded good, too!

Looking forward to seeing your souvies!
It was pretty good sizes, especially compared to the wine!

This was it, my last day. I was sad to be leaving but ready to go home at the same time. I missed my cats and was ready to sleep in my bed again. I have yet to determine what the perfect trip length is...but I think 11 days might be just a little too long.

I woke up and finished packing then spent some time out on the balcony watching the animals for the last time. It was pretty quiet, but I did get to say goodbye to my favorites, the Ankole Cattle. While doing my watching I had a delicious, nutritious breakfast of Zebra Domes. :rotfl:

I gathered my bags and took the long, sad walk to the parking lot. At first I couldn't find the car. I had made a careful parking choice the night before so I wouldn't be dragging my bags all around looking for a spot, but I guess that didn't work out for me. Eventually I spotted it - one row over from where I was looking, d'oh!

This delayed me slightly in getting to Epcot, but I still managed to make it there before Rope Drop. As I was waiting for things to open up, I tried to decide my plan of action for getting to my first destination. I needed to pick up a wristband for the Andrew Zimmern book signing at the F&W Festival Welcome Center. I elected to take my standby detour for the trip through Innoventions. This didn't give me much of an advantage other than the fact that there were less people waiting to get into Innoventions first thing in the morning. In fact, it was just me and a couple who were rushing to Sum of All Thrills. As much as I would have loved to join them, I decided that the wristband was my priority.

I walked briskly to the Welcome Center following a bunch of crazy, running women. I wasn't too concerned about not getting my wristband since it was first thing in the morning, but I didn't realize it would be so popular. When I got to the Welcome Center I saw everyone immediately bear left down the ramp to the same day ticket counter. Phew....no wristband competition for me. I walked over to the little shop and told the guy what I wanted...and he had no clue what I was asking for. Luckily, a manager came over and helped him out and I received wristband #1 :thumbsup2

Next stop was the demo check-in table to get my ticket ahead of time, much easier than fighting the crowds right before the demo. When I got to that table, nobody was ready there either! I waited patiently and they finally got me my ticket and then I was on my merry way.

I started back toward Innoventions thinking I'd do a few rounds on Sum of All Thrills when I was drawn in a different direction. The Ellen's Energy Adventure CM asked me why everybody was running to the Welcome Center so I told him about the demo and he didn't seem impressed by the Andrew Zimmern name :rotfl: I asked him how much longer until the next show and he said it was set to start in just a minute. I couldn't resist...after all, who makes Ellen their first attraction? Well, I can tell you who - me and two other people!

I entered the preshow and found just one older couple waiting to enter the ride. We sat on the benches and watched the show - it's funny when Ellen talks to people that aren't there and the preset voice responses go off. At least in a somewhat full auditorium it's not completely weird...with three silent people watching it's pretty funny to experience.

After the preshow finished, the CM came on and did his announcement and invited us on the ride and I messed up!! I started walking in completely the wrong direction and he says to me over the microphone, "You are going the wrong way!" Embarrassment over, I found the RIGHT door and we went in to pick our seats. The couple took the far left car in one of the very first rows and I took the middle car one of the back rows. It would pretty much be like we were having our own private show - pretty darn cool.

I got to do something I NEVER get to do, take pictures. I didn't use a flash, but with no heads in the way I was able to get some OK ones.

0910311010.jpg

0910311012.jpg

I think I'm going to try and repeat this experience another time and maybe, just maybe, I'll be the ONLY one in the ride.

Next stop was Sum of All Thrills - I didn't get great scores, but I have since learned the secret to getting the top score (which you can learn too if you listen to the WDW Today podcast - thanks to my fellow Mensan, Len!)

I started towards the Land after my ride and ran across the Jammitors doing a F&W themed show in the breezeway.

0910311013.jpg

I didn't stay for too long as I wanted to get to the Land. I needed me some Living with the Land and had no time for silly music!! ;)

Epcot was buzzing with people, probably because it was a Halloween Saturday. There was actually a LINE at Living with the Land!! It moved quickly though and I got a good seat.

0910311016.jpg

0910311019.jpg

0910311021.jpg

I had time for a briskish walk around World Showcase with some stops for snacks. I started on the Canada side and detoured to see O'Canada, a show I hadn't watched in a couple trips. I liked the changes although I don't really enjoy Martin Short all that much. There was a deaf guy in the theater who got a reading device, but it didn't really work. I felt bad, but he seemed to be happy just watching the scenery.

I had snacks at the Cork, Ireland, Bologna, Italy and the Shanghai, China booths. Feeling mostly satisfied and full of sugar, I started towards the Welcome Center for my AZ demo.
