While cleaning out a closet this past weekend I came across a bag filled with Mickey Mouse soaps and other stuff from all of our trips. I remembered several years ago reading on this board that someone collected these and gave them to one of the childrens hospitals. So, I brought them to our local McDonald House and the kids were just beside themselves.
So!!!!!!!!!! I thought that this would be a good project for me, I have been put out to pasture because of RA and Diabetes and can't work in my chosen Medical profession. I thought that I would collect any Mickey Mouse soaps, shampoos, Mickey Mouse washcloths ( you know the ones that people give you as gifts that are compressed in a little package that they find at the Disney check-out register), those extra things that you get in the rooms at WDW that you don't know what to do with, and give them a home at the University of New Mexico Childrens Hospital and the McDonald House there.
I don't know if this would be approiate for this board but if anyone wants to send me any of these items I would act as your representative and give then a home.
If this sounds OK I will list my name and address so that anyone who wants to send me stuff I will do so!

Sounds great.

:D

We do something similar-we save them up from our vacations and give them to the local domestic violence shelter. They make up little toiletry kits for people who have to leave their homes in the middle of the night due to a crisis. I heard that some of the children who come there really like the Mickey Mouse stuff.

I hope you get a good response.

Great idea.

We'll drop ours off at the children's hospital here.

Thanks.

I send all mine to a battered women's family shelter. The kids love them!

This sounds like something I would love to do. Do you think it's ok to start doing it here in San Antonio, TX. Or would it be better to send items to the first person to start SOS project. If I do start it here, where can I find info to start such a project?

We do it for a memorial foundation in my sister's name at Albany Medical Center here in NY. It helps inpatients and their families with Cystic fibrosis. This way they have something other than that terrible hospital soaps and shampoos etc.

I think it would be better to save the postage (which is more money that could be donated), unless you don't have a shelter near you, and drop them somewhere locally. They weigh a lot once you have several. Plus, the post office doesn't like items like shampoo going through the mail, so be sure you tell them that's what is in the package.
We donated 30 soaps and 11 shapoo's to the Schenectady City Mission women's and children's shelter Tuesday...yesterday they had their grand opening, and these will be the soaps they start out with.
I can't use them myself, since I have asthma, and the smell just gets to me.

That's good to know. My daugher is doing her nursing training at Albany Med, so we have a way to get soaps out there. The hospital doesnt' mind you bringing in scented soap?

you can talk to the pulmonary unit at the children's medical dept @ Albany Med. and they can get in touch with Mrs. Cheney, (sister's Sis in law) The foundation is very well know there. Donna M. Crandall Memorial Foundation. They do a lot more than just soaps for the patients, CD's, phone cards, gameboys, video's snacks ( salt cravers) Lot's of tissues. Each in patient gets a gift bag which is about the size of a shopping bag filled with items. Last year a shower was built so those who had the need could roll in without assistance. She wanted patients to be treated like people especially since they spent so much of their lives there.
My DS and BIL went on their honeymoon to mickey's house and every year of their 20 year marriage so the Disney soaps have a special meaning.
