I thought it was cute when I noticed a sparrow building a nest in my Easter egg wreath two weeks ago. This morning I found three eggs in it with two broken eggs on the ground. I would like to take the wreath down Monday but I feel guilty about it:confused3 Every time I walk on the porch, the bird flies out and scares us both. Anybody have an idea about what to do?

Thanks:)

If it was me, I would leave it up and sue the back door, but that's nutso to do that

I should add that we have a very lovely screened in porch that we use a lot in the spring. I was wondering if there was a way to move the nest, I guess.

I'd leave the wreath up.

Isn't the Idea of Easter to celebrate the rebirth of the Lord? It is also considered the rebirth of the land and living things so how much more of a celebration of Easter than having new life in the Easter wreath!!!

Nothing would be disturbed until that little sparrow had been born and flew the nest.

Years ago I had a similar thing happen. We were told not to move the nest. The parents can get easily confused and not come back to the nest.

I used to have a hanging basket right by our door to the driveway...the door was always used. Yup, birds built a nest in it and we had to use the front door.

The following year I still hung a basket, but discouraged the birds during early nest building. Our yard was full of large trees they could use and really be much happier :-)

This happens to my mom every year. She used to get irritated with leaving the wreath up after Easter, but now she looks forward to watching the new life emerge from it. :goodvibes

A sparrow built a nest in my hanging basket of flowers that is by my front door. I tried to discourage them but the male and female persisted. They are very cute. Now there are 4 eggs in the nest and one of them is on it all the time. The problem is that I cannot water my flowers in that basket and they are dying. I don't care about the flowers but the living flowers were providing shade for this nest. Now the nest is in the sun for a few hours a day. I should say that I live in Pinellas County, FL and it is very HOT here.
I try to put a bit of water in there so the flowers will thrive and provide shade until the babies are hatched but it scares the parent away if I do. I am not sure how to handle it. The eggs have been there about 11 days now. Anyone have suggestions or knowledge on this subject?
Thanks, Brenda

Maybe get one of thos glass bulbs that water your flowers for you. I've seen them on TV and at Walmart

I'd let them nest. House sparrows are not protected, so technically you can get rid of the nest. Moving it would do no good - mom and dad won't return if you touch it and probably couldn't find it anyway.

If it's possible it's NOT a sparrow and something else, it may actually be illegal to move it. Crazy as it seems, we currently have a major construction project halted because a pair of ospreys (I think) made a nest on one of the cranes over night. By law, the nest can't be disturbed so the construction site has been shut down until the eggs hatch and the birds leave the nest.

Coming from a person who has escorted squirrels across the road and only uses Have-A-Heart traps for mice (free ride down in the elevator AND a cookie!!) -- I would use the back door! :goodvibes

Please leave it up, if you touch it the bird will not go back to the nest. I distrubed a nest without knowing it was there and I felt awful because the bird never came back.

Actually, the water bulb idea is a good one. I will try that. The birds are not disturbed by using the front door and I would never move it. The only issue is that I think if the flowers die, the nest will be in the sun too much. Maybe that is not an issue with Sparrow eggs, I don't know. Anyway, I will try the water bulb. Thanks to Lizabu:)

Why I could have wrote that post myself...except it is my xmas wreath still up lol...and the babies are already hatching...and poor moma has been in my house twice. Once someone left and opened the door too quick and she flew in. Other time hubby and I were out and we left before dark so the light wasnt on after unlocking the door and going in birdie flew into house. Now we are a tad more careful.

Celebrate the birth of the babies.

Another vote to use a different door until she's finished using your front door. :goodvibes
Enjoy it! I love spring and new life. It's an amazing miracle!! :goodvibes
(and take pics if you can! :thumbsup2 )

*scratches her head and thinks what her husband the handyman would do*

I can see it now. No way would he be content to allow some birds exclusive access to the fancy door he installed himself. He'd probably move the wreathe (without touching the birds nest) off the door, and hang it up on an exterior wall of the house next to it. Then the bird's nest would be right next to the door, but not on it. You could use your door again and hopefully the parent birds wouldn't get too upset or confused that their nest had been moved a couple feet. (Unless it was a pigeon's nest. Then he'd probably just throw it in the trash, he thinks pigeons are parasite ridden rats with wings).

Hmm, I wonder if that would work. I'll probably never have a chance to find out, as birds never nest in our Xmas wreathes and I never bother putting one out for Easter.
