Do we need to worry about mosquitos in August at Disneyland. We are from the east coast and those pesty buggers are everywhere. Just wondering if we need to come prepared to fight them off.

Thanks for any help.

I don't think you need to worry much. I was there in July and there were no mosquitoes.

I'm not saying they aren't around here somewhere, but I have lived in SoCal for 4 years now and have yet to be bitten by a mosquito here. Last week I was in Florida visiting family and had at least a dozen bites within my first 24 hours there. I'm typically irresistible to the little buggers but I've never worried about it here.

That is exactly what I was hoping to hear. I just worried because of all the trees and rivers (jungle cruise and Rivers of America) that the kids would be eaten alive. That is truly great news. Thanks again!

This really is one of the nice things about California--we don't have many mosquitos at all. I can sit on my front porch in summer and never be bit. I went to visit relatives in the south and was eaten alive--and that is when I realized the difference. Disneyland has beautiful plants and flowers, but no mosquitos to speak of. Earthquakes are another issue all together!;)

I dont recall mosquitos when we would visit during that time of the year.

Good question. Good to know. Cases of west Nile have been reported in my area:scared1:

We have West Nile in Northern CA. When we stay at the family beach house (Newport Beach) they are bad, but have never had a problem in Anaheim.

Sure there's bugs but nothing like FL has. Its too dry in the west. FL has humidity levels in the 70-90% range for much of the year especially summer. Southern California sees mostly low humidity except for a few brief periods during the year. FL is wetlands everywhere, CA not even close.

For a rough guess I'd say for every skeeter in CA there is 1000 in FL.

No bites for me, but I did get dive bombed ny two giant beetles while waiting for my DH when he was on CS.

I guess it depends where you are. Where I am, in the "country" of Northern California, we deffiently have "squimitos."

Now I can attest that I have never seem them at Disneyland.

I was going to say that. ::yes:: Where we live vineyard/orchard country, in Nor Cal, the mosquitos are crazy bad. Not as big as Alaska or Florida mosquitos, but they are hungery buggers around here.
That is one of the things I love about So Cal. You can be enojoying outside activities at dusk without being bit. I wouldn't be surprised if DL has an active mosquito abatement program, too.

Since you brought up earthquakes and I am not used to that (but am used to being eaten alive by mosquitoes every night in the summer) what can we expect for a 7-10 day visit to southern California as far as the earth shaking. Will we feel a rumble or two as a normal part of our visit?

I grew up in Anaheim, and mosquitos were never a problem. I currently live in Nor Cal, and they can get crazy up here.

You won't feel the overwhelming majority of them. I've lived here for 12 years and have only felt three little ones (so small I don't even have a broken dish to show for it.)

And no skeeters! I live right on the ocean and only get a few bite a year - never at DL!

There are a lot of mosquitos in California, probably more than 30 different species. However, they are controlled pretty well in the urban areas, mass sprayings, mosquito fish, rules about standing water, etc.

I would put good money on there being mosquito fish in every body of water at DL. I have never noticed any mosquitos in all the times we have been there.

Around where I live (Monterey), they're reporting that they've found a few birds (3 maybe?) with West Nile, but no human cases so far in 2012. Of course, if there are carriers around, eventually there will be some human cases. But it's pretty darn rare.
