It's to express emotion.
I'd never swear to be cool. I do it when I'm mad or I did something by accident. Like I would say the f word if I were to drop my 800 word essay on global warming in the sink full of water when I was standing over it.

I can make a sailor blush if I put my mind to it, and I don't do it to look cool. I do it to enhance the sentence I'm saying. If you hear "darn it" and you hear "damn it', "damn it" sounds more emotional. Like you mean it more. Thats why I swear. To express how I'm feeling, when other words aren't enough.
