to all those who have opened their doors (and sometimes their wallets) to all the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts selling popcorn.

It has been a lot harder this year than in previous years, but thanks to people like you, my son is 2/3rds of his way to his goal of $1800 in popcorn sales. He has already sold enough to pay for his next year's registration fees and all the camping trips his troop has planned for the coming year. He is also hoping to use the incentive gift cards to Walmart to help pay for his very own lap top computer.

I'd also like to thank those who were unable to buy popcorn this year, but were willing to listen to the Scouts give their sales pitches -- thanks to you my son has learned perseverance and how to be gracious even when things don't go his way.

I wish they would go to a cheaper item to buy! Last year I said sure I will buy one of the smaller tins and the kid said something like 18.00---I almost fell over LOL....listen kid...I will spend 5.00 what do you have for that?? I got like a few packs of microwave type popcorn LOL...gimme a break- I would rather spend the 3.50 on a box of cookies!

Congrats to your son! I have two scouts - a Cub Scout and a Boy Scout - and last year, they went door to door (to door to door!) trying to sell popcorn. I thought they were so cute, one in his brown Boy Scout uniform, and my little guy in his little blue Tiger uniform.

They actually had people who wouldn't even open the door to them. Who does that? At one house, people actually scurried inside when they saw the boys coming and then didn't open the door. I was shocked. This wasn't in our subdivision but was in the next one down, and I just couldn't believe that people in my area would act like that.

So I know how hard it is to sell popcorn, especially these days when so many people are cutting back, and just wanted to tell your son (and you) congratulations on such successful sales!!!

We bought ours from our friend. I thought the money was for scouting cost but I am not thrilled with the GC. I am buying way over priced popcorn so a boy who could not afford the cost of camping can join in. I am not buying the popcorn so kids can buy junk at Walmart.

Perhaps I wasn't clear -- my son gets 30% of everything he sells deposited into his Scout account. That money he uses to pay for summer camp ($250), his registration fees ($15), a subscription to Boys' Life magazine (the magazine for Scouts $40) and all the other camping trips that the troop goes on (they range from $15 to $30 each). In addition to that, Trails End gives out incentive prizes for the different sales levels (they range from camping equipment to gift cards). These incentives are generally worth 10% of the popcorn sales. Another 30% goes to our council for the upkeep of the camps, scholarships for Scouts who otherwise couldn't afford to go to camp, and supplies to run the various camps. Only 30% of the sales go to Trails' End (the providers of the popcorn).

He doesn't buy junk from Walmart -- actually he usually sells the Walmart cards to me. This year he's saving up to buy a laptop computer of his own -- I don't think that counts as junk either.

ETA: My daughter used to be a Girl Scout. For each box of cookies she sold, only 20% came back to our troop and I have no idea where the rest of it went. I like the Boy Scout model much better!
