A quick month-by-month look at Disney World cost, crowds, weather, and special events

December Special Events That May Affects Crowds or Your Stay:

Wondering about whether or not the Candlelight Processional at Epcot is worth attending? Wondering about the Candlelight Processional Dinner Package that guarantees a seat and a private viewing area for Illuminations? Let me answer all your questions at, Is the 2010 Candlelight Processional Package Worth the Cost?

In addition, I have a full explanation of what Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party includes and whether or not it's worth the cost of the pricey ticket. Visit, Is Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party Worth the Cost?

Pop Warner is a serious youth football league which brings its Super Bowl to ESPN's Wide World of Sports Complex at the beginning of December. In 2010, it runs from December 4th through the 11th. The National Cheer and Dance Championships are also that week. Pop Warner does not have a substantial impact on theme park attendance, but it does have a serious impact on the resorts because the great majority of the kids and their families stay on Disney Property. In the past, Disney has offered the All-Star Sports, Music, and Movies at discounted rates to Pop Warner families and these resorts will be filled with excited boys between the ages of 8-14. The Port Orleans Riverside and Coronado Springs, both Disney Moderates, have also been offered at discounted rates in the past. My strong recommendation would be to book one of the other resorts during the week of December 4-11. For Values, look at the Pop Century, and for Moderates, consider the Caribbean Beach Resort. The Deluxes should not be affected. The official details of which resorts they will be at are not available until October, so we will know more then. As stated before, Pop Warner kids and their families are occupied mostly by Pop Warner activities and they do not affect theme park crowds much.

Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party runs throughout December. It is a “hard ticket” event, which means you need to purchase a separate event ticket to attend. This year, the Party runs from 7pm to 12am at the Magic Kingdom on the evenings of December 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 10, 12, 14, 16, 17, and 19. With tax, tickets are $57.46 for adults 10 and older and $51.07 for kids ages 3-9 if purchased in advance or $63.85 and $57.46 respectively on the day of the Party. The advanced purchase discount is not available on December 7, 10, 12, 17, and 19, which means you’ll pay the “day-of” price regardless of when the tickets are purchased. Like Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party, the Party includes an additional parade, fireworks show, stage show, and special Castle lighting. Cocoa and cookies also take the place of trick or treating candy. For more information and to order tickets, visit http://disneyworld.disney.go.com/pa...al-events/mickeys-very-merry-christmas-party/

Holidays Around the World in Epcot runs through the month of December. Disney brings in storytellers to tell holiday stories and explain unique traditions in many of the World Showcase countries. Santa Claus is also available for pictures and wishlists in the American Pavilion. In addition, the Candlelight Processional is an amazing stage show featuring the voices of famous celebrities, a large choir, and a 50-piece orchestra. The show, which tells the story of Christmas, is put on three times throughout the night (5pm, 6:45pm, and 8pm) and lasts about 40 minutes. Illuminations, the nightly fireworks and laser show, also includes several holiday-only effects that you won’t want to miss. Holidays Around the World will increase crowds to the World Showcase in the evening, especially on evenings that the Candlelight Processional is shown (the specific dates aren’t yet announced). You may want to visit the World Showcase in the early afternoon if Epcot is particularly busy.

At the Hollywood Studios, the Osborne Family (no relation to Ozzy and Sharon) Spectacle of Dancing Lights runs every day throughout the month of December. The Spectacle features over 5 million lights carefully set up throughout the Streets of America. The effects are truly mesmerizing and admission is included with your ticket. The lights are up most evenings and shouldn’t affect crowds much due to the fact that there is plenty of opportunity to visit the Spectacle. You may want to avoid the Streets of America during the evening lighting ceremony if it’s of little interest or you’ve already seen it. It’s usually a good time to ride the Rock N Roller Coaster and Tower of Terror, which are both far away from the light show. You’ll definitely want to take a minute to view the lights at some point in your stay.

I have made a substantial edit to the calendar. Still collecting any advice or changes you think should be made. If you see something that isn't clear or doesn't sound correct, please post and I will take a look at updating it.

Thanks for the great info about the Candlelight Processional. May end up planning a December trip, I hope that packages are still available at the last minute (ie, people might cancel and I could get their spot).

Great info. Love the site. Bookmarked it.

Having said that, there's always room for improvement, and I think it's great that Cafeen took all that time and effort to offer a professional critique for free.

Just took another look at your pages and you've done some great improvements on them. Excellent! Thank you.

Wow, I love all this info! I've already book marked your website and emailed it to a few friends and family members of mine. Thank you so much for doing this, it's definitely appreciated! :worship:

Great site!!! Just wondering, how soon will March 2011 Crowd Calendar be available?

Keep up the good work:thumbsup2

Probably about three days. Hopefully I can put up a preview of the March calendar tomorrow and then I have to go back and look over the wording.

To Op
thanks for posting this...I was about to book 2nd week of Oct and read this and found that's the one week in oct to avoid.
So we'll go the 3rd week of oct instead.

so thanks to you posting this you saved us making a mistake.

This post is just fantastic! I am thinking about a trip in Feb or March 2011, but, for various reasons, have NO time to plan like I usually do. I've never been in the late winter/early spring, and really needed an overview. Can't tell you how much you've helped by doing this summary!!! :worship:

Thank you very much for this information - I am finding it VERY helpful! And I do like that you identified the Brazil tour groups, as from what I have read on other threads they cause the most difficulties. Thank you! :goodvibes

Osborne lights are listed as ending Jan4th, 2011. All the "official" stuff from Disney shows it ending Jan 3rd.

We get in on the 4th and I REALLY want to see it.

Any way to check this fact?

Amy

Those kinds of ride closures depend on the year. Splash Mountain is almost always closed from about January 3rd through the month of January and reopens sometime in February. This year it was scheduled to reopen February 27th. Disney can open it pretty much anytime it wants though and does occasionally, even when it it's scheduled to be closed.

This is not true. I posted this awhile back:

2010 - Closed January 3 - February 27

2009: Closed January 4-18

2008: Closed January 1- February 15

2007: Closed January 2-27

2006: Closed January 23-27

I've been there in January 3 years in a row and Splash was open for two of them. Also, I haven't seen any evidence of it being opened when it's scheduled to be closed. I've seen several threads where people were hopeful ... Maybe it's happened, but I'd hate for people to get their hopes up if it hasn't happened.

Also, what you posted for average temps for January is off a bit. My research showed average high is 72. More than that, I think it's worth pointing out that January weather is wildly erratic. We've seen snow at WDW in January. Inevitably, there's always a day during our week (mid-late January) where we are bundled up and can see our breath. Then again, there are always days when it's warm enough to go swimming! I think we saw 85 degree highs on our 2009 trip. Anyway, I thought that was worth pointing out.
